How will Passions cancellation affect the ratings of other soaps?

In some markets where Passions airs opposite OLTL and ATWT, it is possible one of those shows will gain a few Passions fans. But more than likely those fans will just find something new to watch or nothing at all.

Also, in some cities, Days is taking Passions slot so Days may benefit or suffer as a result.

I don't think it will give a ratings boost. When AW was cancelled and Jake/Vicky/Cass/Lila moved to ATWT, Some thought that AW viewers would follow these characters to oakdale and spark a ratings rise. This did not happen. Cass and Lila were written off. Vicky was soon killed off and 2 years later Jake was killed off. The only person from AW who is still there is Christopher Goutman.

If Days does take passions timeslot, this may also hurt OLTL or ATWT if people who already watch one of these shows chooses to watch Days instead of OLTL or ATWT. The opposite may be true a DAYS viewer who also watches ethier OLTL or ATWT may choose to watch the other show instead of Days.

For Days orginal timeslot which competes against AMC/B&B and I believe Y&R in most markets. If no soap is on during that time on NBC it may help these three shows in the ratings.

I would think that the soap that would benefit the most would be Days. Since it's on the same network. However I think most of the veiwers that watch Passions already watch Days since Day's is Passions lead in.

I think ATWT and OLTL may get a small rise but ultimately nothing significant.

The just cancellation of PSN won't affect any drama in a significant way solely b/c PSN brought nothing to the table, it wasn't an added bonus or an asset TV. It was & continues to be a liability. Daytime, now more than ever, needs solid credibility, and PSN was a major hinderance to attaining that. Once people found out about PSN, many of them assumed that all or most daytime dramas were just like it (simply not wroth watching for far too many reasons), when it fact, the vast majority of the remaining serials were/are 15-35x better than PSN ever was. Daytime really doesn't need the Girls 12-17 demo audience, they're the ones who stuck by DOOL when JER & K. Corday were destroying it this decade & they helped allow PSN last far too long.

Now, the cancellation of GL will have a minor effect on The Price Is Right 1, while the cancellation of AMC will be a positive, major one for Y&R. Ex-AMC fans/viewers are far more likely to become a Y&R fan/viewer than they are with DOOL. Y&R was the only drama in 06 not to reach record lows in viewers b/c it's numbers increased over 05. It's highest rated ep was about 8 million viewers (Those watching live, recording, SOAPnet, tuning in outside of the home etc). DOOL continues to have a hard-on for the 12-34 demo, the same demo that AMC hasn't been popular with for more than a decade.

If PGP decides to cancel both GL & ATWT this year (their contracts are up for renewal & their situations are dire), expect a healthy bump in the ratings for the improved OLTL & the always entertaining GH, and rightly so. Who ever thought I'd be saying this: Long live OLTL! :D

    • Dallas peaked early, IMO. Maybe not a fair statement as I’m still making my way through the first half of its run, but I think it’s hard to argue to point that S3 into S4 was its high point. Back to Knots. Wrapping up “And Never Brought to Mind.” Greg’s introduction kinda took me by surprise. I low-key dreaded his arrival bc I know he very quickly gets to the center of the show, but even though they wasted no time connecting him with Mac, Abby, Gary, and Karen, it still feels like a gradual intro. The juxtaposition of the ending of the Chip story with the heating up Abby’s plotting is quite symbolic of the changes the show was going through. I absolutely cannot imagine Kenny and Ginger having any part in any of this. Yall, the Gary/Val piano theme that they pull out from time to time is my FAVORITE. I find myself humming it constantly.
    • Bloodshed is inevitable now. It’s another reason I’m glad Black people aren’t getting involved in these protests. As awful as this is, I keep reminding myself that 54 percent of Latino men voted for Trump. These people were put in harm’s way by members of their own communities and sometimes even members of their own families. Too many people decided to touch the stove.
    • Maybe I'm still in denial, but nothing about Neighbours' ongoing social media output gives the vibe of a show that's ending. In today's 'Roundup' video, Alan Fletcher referenced that production finishes in five weeks, but in all the show's posts the cast are as jovial and lighthearted as ever. Remarkably so for people who are about to lose their jobs.    Perhaps they're just putting a brave face on things, and I know they approached the previous axing with a positive attitude. Maybe putting an upbeat face on things is a collective way of showing potential backers that there's still life in the show? Or is it possible that they already know the show has been saved, and we'll get an announcement next month when filming wraps and the show 'rests'?   Does any of that make sense?!
    • A very good week for male eye candy on GH. New Michael is beautiful, Curtis's arms looked great in that polo shirt, Cody looks even more handsome with his new haircut AND we got Marco in swim shorts rocking his lovely bod and chest fur.

    • Yeah when Jamey Giddens did breakdowns for DAYS, he would sometimes state in tweets that specific things were his idea that he had pitched to Ron.
    • I don't, since they've clearly incorporated them into Tomas' storyline, and I happen to like his tattoos, but his jackets not fitting doesn't mean they're trying to cover his tattoos. The clothing overall isn't the issue; it's the fit. And I expect(ed) more from Jeresa Featherstone and her team. Very disappointed. He's the only male, overall, whose costume irritates me.
    • "And OMG, watching the scenes of Roger's return in comparison...the quality in the writing really nosedived. The stupid mask." Very much agreed.  Having Roger hide behind a mask for weeks/months, with it culminating with him swinging in on a vine at Blake/Phillip's wedding....geez.  So juvenile. IMO, Guiding Light never did a good job reintroducing major characters, either from the dead or elsewhere.  Masked balls = awful.  Amish = awful. When Reva was brought back from the dead, she should've just showed up in Springfield as Reva, and informed everyone that she had been gone for years because she felt like it.  She had a four-year fling with some dude who ended up dumping her due to disloyalty. Josh would be pissed and declare that their love is not *always* but *sometimes* and he'd act accordingly.  Her kids would hate her.
    • Agreed. The Emmys next year are gonna be a pretty tough competition and I hope we get a Days sweep lol  Not only does Deidre deserve a nomination for these last few weeks, but I also think Paul Telfer, Raven Bowens, Carson Boatman, Dan Feuerriegel and Alison Sweeney have good chances as well.
    • It’s not about a lack of faith and trust in MVJ, it’s about a a lack of faith and trust in Ron Carlivati, who I think can be very sneaky and manipulative when he wants to be.  And, all that “He’s just a breakdown writer” talk never changed my mind about anything, because at Days, it was “just a breakdown writer” that gave us some of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen.
