Here's an article ;)

With technology, stations will know what age groups watched last night.

The November sweeps close Thursday night, but this, the first important rating period of the TV season, came and went on little cat feet, didn't it?

Gone are the days when mega-miniseries such as "Lonesome Dove" and "Winds of War" wrapped us up in their big-budget melodrama. Even those heavily hyped local news specials — on everything from mammograms to motel germs — have gotten quieter during sweeps.

It's a sign of the times and the changing technology.

We aren't forced to wait until the November, February and May sweeps to find out if a show is popular. Of the 210 TV markets in the country, 56 (including Austin) have overnight meter ratings. Local stations get report cards every day.

But overnight ratings in most metered markets reflect only total household counts, not the important age demographic ratings that advertisers covet, stations sell and Nielsen gathers during the big sweeps months.

Some of us are more important than all of us, so to speak. Until the latest overnight meter technology spreads, sweeps ratings still will trump overnights.

"Everything is based on demos," says Patti Smith, station manager at ABC affiliate KVUE Channel 24. "Everybody talks about 18 to 49, but 25 to 54 is a pretty spectacular demo because it includes baby boomers who have money to spend."

None of our local stations sells advertising based on total household ratings. Advertising rates are set according to the preferred 18-49 and 25-54 demos. There is no set cost for a program or a time slot; everything is flexible and negotiable.

That's nice.

But some of my closest friends in real life work in the tv industry now. And when their bosses are telling them that they and the advertisers covet the HH's and total viewers, I am going to believe my best buds.

Who are you and what have you done with Mike? Just a few months ago you were all gung ho about DAYS great demos and saying those are what matters most LMAO

All I know is that the person I have spoken to (which works for CBS) says that 25-54 is their most important demo followed by 18-49 demos. I guess you could ask 10 different people and they would all have a different answer

I think the move has more to do with NBC wanting to compete with ABC for morning ratings/ publicity than it does about whether or not a 4th hour of Today would beat Passions in ratings HH or demos.

NBC is ticked that ABC is getting so much publicity and increased viewership from all the Rosie goings on at The View. They are what people are talking about in daytime and television in general. The goings on at The View is probably the most talked about thing in all of television for this season so far. I can't name you any new shows that are hits but I know Rosie has been in fueds with Kelly Ripa & Donald Trump so far this season. LOL NBC wants a piece of that.

Regis and Kelly also have a strong base as well. I don't know if many of you know it but Regis and Kelly is NOT an ABC show it is syndicated. In Orlando for instance Regis and Kelly aired on my NBC affiliate. In Buffalo over the years we have had Regis & Kelly or Kathie Lee air on ABC, NBC and CBS. Though I think it generally does air on many more ABC affiliates than others.

NBC is always a follower. ABC had a hit with Millianaire and NBC struck right back with Weakest Link. CBS had a hit with Survivor and NBC struck right back with Fear Factor. FOX struck gold with American Idol, NBC airs a few pathetic talent shows not even worth mentioning.

The View is the "hot topic" now, so that is what NBC is desperate to copy. If they tried to actually develop decent shows instead of pathetically trying to duplicate other networks success with bad copy cats, they might not be in such a mess now.

NBC can't even depend on itself to develop a new show to combat The View. Instead they stretch TODAY out beyond its limits because it is convient and the fastest easiest thing for them to do.

If they are talking to Billy Bush about taking on hosting duties of that time slot, them maybe they are wanting to gear that hour more to celebrity entertainment type hour. But it is a bad idea for them to try to go after a talk show The Veiw with a show that is in the NEWS department. To get the type of hype and publicity they would like that The View is getting they would be to endangerd of risking the news reputation of The Today Show. So all that would do would leave us with another hour of Today fluff. Which is all the 3rd hour is.

Passions only gets kicked around into this scenariio because in order for NBC to take an hour away from the affililates, they need to give them another hour in return. Once the affiliates get an hour of free time away from Network dictation they are very reluctant to give it back. They can make more with a rerun of Gilligan's Island or a tawdy talk show. So that is why NBC would have to swap times with affiliates. NBC affiliates already have a lot more free time than ABC and CBS. The only time slots left that NBC would have to bargain with are DAYS and PASSIONS hours because NBC doesn't have anything else left on the table.

LOL. I was *just* about to ask if your friend worked at CBS. It makes sense now why they'd say that. CBS skewers old, so they would spin it that way. Just as if you went to ABC with demo hogs Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, who are lauded on for how they get all the 18-49's.

Just because you're in the industry doesn't make you the best source of info. I know a lot of newspaper writers who are somehow making a living at it who I wouldn't trust to tell me the colour of my eyes.
