DAYS/ATWT: Is Hogan Sheffer a habitual liar?

Perhaps surprisingly, I'm not really that upset about Renee's firing. When there were talks of her getting the axe in previous years, I was really upset... she really showed her talents during the baby switch storyline.

But the truth is, aside from very few actors/characters, I never want to part with any of the characters. But it happens, and truth be told, I don't expect Renee Jones to be gone forever. She's just too much of a Days staple. If I expected to never see her again, I might be more upset than I am. But I honestly expect her to be back someday -- even if only recurring. We also don't know that this was Hogan's choice. He spoke highly of Renee Jones and Abe/Lexie, and if he didn't mean it, he wouldn't be giving them the significant airtime he's been giving them. I'd be willing to bet that NBC tested some focus groups to see what was popular and unpopular with their desired demographic, and Abe/Lexie didn't generate much of a response, so the network asked him to get rid of 'dead weight' to save money. Who knows. Either way, I'm surprisingly not that upset about this, because just a few years ago when there were talks of Renee getting the axe, I was FURIOUS!

Or maybe I'm just so stoked that I've CONVINCED myself that Eileen Davidson is on her way back to Salem that I'm not about to let anything get me down.

Fact is, even if they fired five more of my favorite characters, Hogan Sheffer has turned this show around. Even on the slowest, most boring episodes, it's lightyears better than anything like the mess JER left this show in. After watching JER's episodes, I felt the need to pop three Tylenol and two Prozacs with a strong vodka chaser. It was all just soooo... twilight zone and effed up. At least Salem is 'normal' again. Still offbeat, but the show doesn't look and play like a bad Comedy Central soap opera/cartoon spoof.

It depends on who you talk to. One group I'm in thinks two years ago was much, much better than the show is today and that's especially even having S&K on. I'm pretty much a snoop and have access to a lot of attitudes. Naturally, I don't agree with everyone everywhere. It would be impossible, there are too many opinions. Generally I fall in the 50 percentile range and that's fine with me. Hogan is hitting the 50 percentile range with me, too. That's not bad actually.

I seriously am beginning to think that "some" DAYS viewers are just so overhwelmed by how good DAYS has become...that now that ONE negative thing has popped up (an actor's exit)...they're screamin' that something's GOT to be wrong with the headwriter. Kinda like when women see some men and think "Ooohh...he's hot!" but then turn around and think "He must be gay."

Get my drift?

I'd agree with this, but DAYS isn't really THAT good! DAYS has improved, undoubtedly, Like Bree said, the romantic scenes, family interactions and lack of flashbacks are SUCH a fresh of breath air. A lot of characters are gaining ground and headed into real people instead of stupid caricatures (like Billie and the potential Phillip return, not to mention Victor who is no longer a prop).

BUT, you can not deny that Sheffer has not delivered so far. It's not too early to judge his work. It is too early to place a verdict on him as a HW for DAYS, but what he has shown us so far has not delivered, and you don't need months and months to come to that conclusion. Sure he can change, AND, just because he has not delivered so far doesn't mean he will not deliver ever or that he is not a good fit at DAYS.

I didn't/don't read spoilers and barely read his interview. I *do* remember reading about Lexie/Abe and that Kate and EJ will start sleeping together... and they both have happened. Lexie and Abe have been featured more than ever now than they have been in over the past few years. I also don't think Hogan is responsible for this firing or that he is a liar because he said he loves them and now a part of them is being written off the show. Hogan has just not delievered MUST SEE soap, and I think that is just the bottom line. DAYS is much better to watch and that is Hogan's doing but must-see it isn't.

His writing out of Austin and Carrie sucked. DAYS could have used their exit to their advantage and send them off with a wedding, but instead they get a 2 day "oh let's get married, NOW and then leave town". This wreaks of JER.

Then you have Nick and Willow. Nick is a potential problem already. Suddenly he is the savior that knows someone who can help Kayla. Yeah, it is miniscule, but in the grand scheme of things, he is responsible for the major plot twist in this "big" sweeps storyline? This is another JER type move. I know he is short term and can tolerate him with Chelsea but that whole bit was so unecessary.

Willow is OK in small doses. I don't think she is such a big problem right now except that she is new.

Stupid special effects will make any scene look dumb IMO.

Corday keeps acting like he wants fans back in, he wants the ratings, but aside from the transition from a bad soap to an increasingly better one, nothing has really been done to bring fans back. Fans will not just come back because the show has stopped being crappy, stopped with its flashbacks and have brought back qualities of good soap, there has to be more of a reason for them. IMO, Hogan hasn't given them much so far and I am pretty sure his contract has some ratings stipulation in it because he did say in his interview that he hopes to brings the ratings up for Corday.

IA with Steve as well, Kristen, if she is coming back, has to come back with purpose and a storyline. Or else it will be Carrie, Austin, Frankie (and to some extent Billie) all over again.

I can't believe Renee Jones and LEXIE are causing all this baby momma drama. And some people who were not upset with an actor such as Ashford (I didn't really care either to be honest) or a character such as Carrie Brady leaving, and they're mad about LEXIE!? It boggles my mind, but different strokes different folks.

I also love Renee Jones but have to agree with the expendable argument. Lexie has served very little purpose and her storyline has been repeated. If someone must go then it sucks but she makes sense. I hate that this does follow the trend that Steve is talking about with woman over 40 but I hope it is the beginning of cutting un-needed characters (Bonnie being the next if the cuts are ones that makes sense, Stephanie, etc).

I agree. It's unfortunate, but let's put it into perspective here.

P.S. Ridge, where have you been all my life?

Well Ashford has left and come back plenty of times I believe. As well it seems that Renee Jones has stuck it out with the show for years, and now she's getting the shaft to cater for the likes of Eileen Davidson and Joe Mascalo(sp?) to return. Plus she's a fine actress.

I'm not disputing the actress' talent or her loyalty....but Lexie is what I'm saying...LEXIE?! Haha. Well, I won't miss the character. I will miss RJ.

^Idk then. But I do remember people saying how incredible the character was during the babyswitch, and how she needs a story again. Plus if Hogan is re-establishing the Dimera's I'd think it would be better to keep RJ. I still say DAYS should drop Stefano once and for all, because characters like that become very gimmicky...see Sheila, James, Alistar...

IMO, it's more of a surprise the character has lasted this long.

She hasn't had a frontburner story since 02!

These fanbase viewers are not going to be happy untill their couples are married, have no obstacles, and are boring. Then they will [!@#$%^&*] that their couple is boring. Then they will [!@#$%^&*] even more so when the show has nothing to do with them but write them out because they've been forced to keep them sitting on the couch together knitting for fear of angering the fanbases. Shows cannot cater to these people as their expectations are unreasonable!

Why does Days need to communicate in big boldassed letters where their characters are going? Watch the freakin' show and see how and where they progress like they did before the internet and its over-spoiling of EVERYTHING. What is the point of even watching if we just went to those, again, unreasonable people and said "by years end, Bo and Hope will renew their vows, learn the baby is theirs, and Hope will love Chelsea as if she was Zack, they're then going to buy a bigger house - move all their families in with them, make some tea, then go shopping for a bit at Salem Place, then Hope will decide she wants to be a model again, then Patrick will kill her, then Billie will [!@#$%^&*] Bo, then Bo and Billie will get married, bla bla bla bla ..." I might as well be reading the cliffnotes to a book and not bother with the show!

A good drama, and especially a good soap, is supposed to keep you slightly in the dark and pull you along with the story as our characters experience it on screen. Just tune to Passions for the perfect example of what giving the audience all the cards is like - boring, repetitive, and infuriating watching such stupid people not grasp such simple things.

John and Marlena fans just got Smokey Freakin' Robinson, and an adventure to Canada, and soon to Italy! They need to STFU!

Brilliant post. I had to quote it because it sums up exactly how I feel.

The fanbases used to actually go on the journey with the characters and see where they ended up. They were willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt but, over the past 6 years, they have grown irrational and completely fickle. Days is damned if they do and damned if they don't. Days gives them happy couples and then fans complain it's boring or because of the lack of screentime. Fans never seem to be truly happy anymore with anything they are given. There is always something negative somewhere and some people condemn stories before they even are out of the starting gate. Let things play out before going wacko. I know Days has burned fans time and again but those that do know about the writing situation and what previews were given should give the show a chance, and by chance I mean more then one month. It's going to take a while after the hell the show went through but a good deal of people don't understand that. SON does but many others don't.

I wish we could take your post and others like it Drew and send it some of the fanbases and the like because someone needs to be talk some sense into some of these fans.

In regards to RJ, I will miss her but Lexie is expendable and has been for years. It sucks to lose her but I can see why she is being chosen. Like others have said, she has had like 3 good stories during her run and that was it. Days is losing diveristy and one hell of an actress but with a cast full of vets and talented young stars sometimes decisions like this have to be made to benefit the show in the long run. Whether it will or not is unknown but it's taking a risk but it's something that has to be done as well so we'll see. Unfortunately, what I thought would happen is as many are using this to trash Hogan further even though it's not his fault.

DOOL has just been my home away from home for so many years and to see the characters that I loved destroyed and made into faux characters was almost more than I could bear. Hope would have never, not ever, turned her back on Bo. Even today, Bo is acting like a simpleton. I hate that. First we had faux-Hope and now we are getting faux-Bo.

How can you even justify leaving that on Hogan's doorstep!? JERk killed Zack. JERk had Chelsea drive the car. JERk had Bo stand up for her. JERk had Hope leave with Patrick. JERk had Hope pregnant with Patrick's baby. JERk had Hope pushing Bo away.

Hogan is bringing them back together! He just had him move in with Hope again. Hogan made the baby be Bo's. Once this picture debacle is done, they'll be together again.

Very true Drew. But Hogan is going back to the sending e-mail crap(stroyline) with Chelsea. Very boring and repetitive if you ask me.
