2023 Writers + Actors Strike Thread
My morning Google Alert email on the combined strike, strongly suggested that we all watch this TED talk by Ethan Hawke on allowing oneself to be creative. Hey, I'm game. It's just 10 minutes.

Days: July 2023 Discussion Thread
Well, sure as shooting, it is happening. And, with the bonus factor that Kristen knows about it because Rachel told her they were having a sleepover! Yeah, one with no jammies. @j swift Surely it would be too good for Harris to be gone! Could we have that one nice thing? We've been pretty darn good. And, yeah, I hope John rips him a new one over taking the gun. But, why does he have the code to the gunsafe?!! That was a mistake.

Ratings from the 70's
March 5th & March 6th at 2 pm eastern (1979) AW first 90 min. show & death of John Randolph 3/5 GL Roger raped Holly 3/5 OLTL Karen Wolek was on the witness stand again & broke down & admitted being a prostitute 3/6 Sorry to duplicate this info. I looked & didn't see it. It was Fred Silverman's idea to take AW to 90 minutes. Basically rather than not being able to do good, he did harm. HUGE kudos, Jason, amazingly gracious of you to make the gift of so much of your time! Plus, unending thanks!

Loving/The City Discussion Thread
Thanks for your reply. I've talked to someone who says they were a friend of Marland's at the time who says he was warned not to work on the project because he & Nixon were great friends & that if anything happened, he would lose the friendship. That person thinks that is indeed what happened. Me, I don't know if I believe them. Likely will never know. I was thinking about this & it's just common sense. Friends, enter into a business venure & it might bust up the friendship. Then I ws thinking about Marland's pattern. Left GH angry over a principle abt story. Left GL angry over a pirnciple abt story. Odds are LOVING was similar.

It does my heart good to talk about this with other people who also feel AW got short shrift at the Emmys. Of course, that idea that two costars split the vote & leave the way open for a third, lower-tier person to win, is just as old as the hills, but I don't think having been said for years makes it accurate necessarily.

Do you, or does anyone here, know what happened between Agnes Nixon & Douglas Marland, that provoked him to leave & her to have his name removed as co-creator?

General Hospital: July 2023 Discussion Thread
@carolineg I agree with you completely about Sonny & the way they are using up his guarantees about half of the time. He's become a Loiterer. @BrendaB Me either. I was shocked to learn who Ava's bio mother was. But, it sits well. Anyone how did Lucy & Felicia get caught? Do we not know yet? One thing I have liked is these impassioned genuine mini-monologues. Anna to Sonny about them being in places in their lives where people sometimes want to kill them. And every decision they make leads them exactly to that place. Then yesterday Tracy temporarily abandoned both snark & sarcasm to entreat NEddie to come home & to fake it until he can make it & let her get him help.

@watson71 Oh, god, yes. Both of those scenes Carmen Duncan & the writing & her scene partner feeding to her, absolutely all the elements needs for an Emmy. If anyone was a perfect Supporting Actress it was Connie. Cannot argue with Anna Stuart or Nancy Frangione.

Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
Early on in the Daytime Emmys there were some controversies. One of them was that other sponsors tried to keep P&G from getting nominations. The actors were pretty disgusted about the whole thing. This is a quote from Peter Simon, Daytime TV No. 7, Search for Tomorrow (c) 1977. PETER SIMON: “The process of selection is all done on the number of friends you have for votes. And this ridiculous competition now between the two coasts, as to where the Emmys are going to be handed out. I mean, what are they talking about? In a soap, where does the performance end? There are certain people in the shows who have all the gravy and other really fine actors who do nothing but the drudgery. The categories in soaps should be best recap, best getting through a scene without fainting…”

Beverlee McKinsey "City Lights" interview, said to be her most candid This is a Facebook link. I'm not sure everyone will be able to access it but where her son Scott who is on Facebook put it up, well that's just where it is. I believe that too. Also I am almost positive that's what the two of them thought. Something along the line of them canceling each other out & leaving the door wide open for Dailey to sashay through. In Beverlee's rare "City Lights" interview with the Canadian "Dick Cavett" Bev talks about being at the Emmys & losing & the two of them going immediately after to the nearest restaurant, taking the first table available, screaming for "Liquor!" & settling in with a bottle, just the two of them, her & Vicky (she called her) & not open to anyone else joining them, they drank & commiserated for hours. She also credits Vicky with giving her the courage & belief in herself to play hardball in negotiations for TEXAS. They screwed up because they built it around her Iris without knowing if she was interested. Oh, yes, good thoughts all. My personal list of "Never Won an Emmy" begins with Beverlee & VW. @teplin Your post 100% personifies my own personal feelings on the matter!

TY He's on some other soap but not on ours. IS NOW! This software doesn't allow polling, does it? Okay, elsewhere we were discussing Daytime Emmy wins that were just wrong & someone said Sharlene #1 beating out Beverlee & Vicky. (reel abt 1st time mention of prostitution) and someone said that Judith Light did not put the courtroom scenes on her reel but still won which is amazing to me that she didn't use from the witness stand. Anyway I said Irene Dailey wasn't a lead role & shouldn't have beat out Beverlee & Vicky. I described Aunt Liz as delightful, irritating, opinionated, know-it-all, buttinsky character role. The poll is AGREE that's her or DISAGREE, you've missed the mark. What do you think? I have boldly said that 90 out of 100 AW fans will agree. So far all who have voted agree.

In an interview on MSNBC Fran Drescher said she now thinks they were "duped" with the 3-day extension, that they canceled some meetings during that time & stonewalled the whole time & that she thinks they were actually just using the time to promote their summer movies. Ding, ding, ding, @Faulkner wins the prize! Yeah, I bet you're on to something here, too.

Oh yes! I have a quote from afterward, a nameless NBC programmer, not Fred but someone who worked for him, that says in essence that they went with the idea of a 90 minute show because they couldn't think of anything better to do at the time. OY! @Paul Raven P&G when they stopped wiping I have seen it expressed as 1979-80. And then you list the 5 shows I believe they continue to have warehoused.

True now for two shows since they've been common on GH for ages! I feel like they are just insensitive to gun violence IRL & there's no excuse for it.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
NBC was almost frenzied about not owning any of their shows at a certain point & actually quite jealous of ABC's ownership. One of the things they came to have against AW was that P&G would not accept their offer to buy into it & be part owner. When they had 4 potential soaps in competition to be the new NBC soap one of the factors in SUNSET BEACH's favor was that the Spelling corp. was open to partial ownership with the network. (The other factor was that the affiliates preferred it over the other 3.)

The Doctors Discussion Thread
It shouldn't make any difference. Their decision to drop a show from their schedule is pretty much absolute. There were some instances where someone negotiated that the network would not cancel it for a fixed period of time. I know Irna did that some. Then, though contracts routinely began to be either 1 year or 2 years or 3 years, when in the early days they literally learned every 13 weeks if they were picked up.
