1982-83 was another of those infamous P&G producer swaps: Mary Ellis Bunim and Fred Bartholemew switched EP positions at Seach for Tomorrow and As the World Turns in late 1981. Bartholemew was EP in March 1982 when Search switched from CBS to NBC. Early in 1983, Gail Kobe, the EP of cancelled Texas, becomes EP of Guiding Light. Allen Potter, then Guiding Light's EP and AW's first EP, returns to AW when Paul Rauch left and/or was fired from Another World. None of the P&G soaps had a good year in 1982. Creatively, they were all over the place in terms of quality and writing. This was also around the time that the P&G Executive in Charge of Production would switch from Robert Short to Ed Trach. It makes you wonder why they swapped EPs the way they did in 1982-83, and they would do the same thing again in 1995 with the same results.

B&B: Steffy Spoiler
Has this so-called "twist" aired yet, because nothing on the show is original or "twist" worthy right now. How many times have we seen an amnesia story that will last a few months, then the character is cured? The writers would have been better off making Steffy blind by saying she bumped her head when she was shot. Sheila could have been trying to sneak into Steffy's hospital room multiple times trying to kill her before she identifies Sheila as the shooter. At least that would have been a little more suspenseful.

🤣🤣🤣 These 1982 storylines were all over the place and made little sense. I'd like to know whose idea was to sideline Douglass Watson in 1982 after he won back to back Emmys in 1980 and 1981. Shouldn't Mac been the one in the helicopter chasing Rachel and Tom in San Diego? Especially given Mac's history with Mitch. Someone behind the scenes was trying real hard to get the audience to like Steve Frame, lol.

Someone somewhere was definitely interfering with the writing based on how they wrote the character of Rachel. From March to July, Rachel had Matthew kidnapped by The Male Panthers, a father's rights group that Mitch was involved with to take Matthew to Mexico on a boat. Rachel gets Matthew back, then Tom, one of The Male Panthers leads Rachel through a car chase in San Diego, while Steve Frame chases them in a helicopter. Mitch goes to jail, and Rachel becomes involved with a Russian artist, Nikolai Pierenko. Nikolai's wife, Belia, is played by Elizabeth Franz, who would later show up in the summer playing another character, Alma Rudder. This lasts about a month, then Rachel again declares her love for Steve Frame as the show tried to replicate the Alice/Steve/Rachel triangle with a different Alice and Steve. Then, Rachel and Steve find themselves in danger when the become trapped in the BelAire Towers when the skyscraper collapses. All of this happened to Rachel in four months, and Mac is like a supporting character in her storyline. This continues for much of 1982, Mac even gives his Christmas toast that year in Liz Matthews living room without Rachel, Ada, Amanda, and Matthew who celebrate Christmas at the Cory mansion with Steve Frame.

Could it possibly be that Finn being shot by Sheila is an April Fools? Is the twist that they pulled an April Fools on the viewers? Has any other soap done an April Fools joke on the audience before?

Lisa's premonitions seemed to disappear. The day she left Bay City was the same day that her aunt, Felicia Gallant, celebrated her birthday. Lisa had no premonition that Felicia was in danger being stalked by the strongman in the hall of mirrors, or that the situation would result in the murder of Jason Frame.

Harrowing soap moments
The Sin Stalker mystery on AW had some terrifying moments- Dr. Glaser trying to kill Crystal Gayle while she singing at Tops. It was an ingenious way to write her into the storyline when she appeared on the show to sing AW's new theme song. Then, the Sin Stalker broke into the Cory mansion during a thunderstorm with no electricity on Mac's birthday and tried to kill Nancy. Ada even got in on the action racing to save Nancy when she heard her screams. And when the Sin Stalker was finally revealed, he lured Donna to a lighthouse and was followed by John Hudson. Dr. Glaser tried to kill John by throwing him off the top of the lighthouse which resulted in John being blinded from hitting his head in the fall.

Most Improved Actors From Their Soap Debuts
When she first appeared on AW in the summer of 1987, It took Anne Heche about six months to go amateurish to outstanding. She greatly improved in 1988 once Tom Eplin's Jake returned and she was playing both Vicky and Marley regularly.

Great Pitch, Poor Execution
On paper, I'm sure the Justine storyline on Another World sounded much better than what played out on screen. The change in writers and producers didn't help the storyline. Justine could have filled the Iris role in Bay City as someone who was looking to stir up trouble for Rachel and Carl, much like Alexis did to Blake and Krystal on Dynasty. Rather, JFP and the writers turned her into an over the top villain who was deformed when she fell from a train trestle. Then even gave her a hook for a hand like Captain Hook. At this point, not even a talented actress like Victoria Wyndham could save this storyline; but, I do think that if they had turned Justine into an Alexis/Iris type character who was there to stir up trouble that it would have worked and Wyndham could have carried it off.

Good & Bad Soap Timeslots
From 1964-1978, Another World had much success in the 3 PM timeslot, even with CBS counterprogramming by moving Price is Right to the afternoon and pairing it with the popular Match Game. CBS also programmed All in the Family (#1 primetime show) and MASH rereuns against AW in the 3 PM timeslot. Once NBC moved Another World to 2:30 in March 1979, then 2:00 in August 1980, the show would never regain its footing as a high rated daytime program. It would spend almost 20 years with ratings fluctuating between the middle to low end of the ratings.

You Are In Charge Of Digital Programming: Cancelled Soaps Edition
Create a P&G soap channel on Pluto TV that debuts a new episode of each show daily and repeats 3 times during the day. Create branding themes like CBS used to do for their soaps- "This week on..." P&G if it chose to do so could still advertise its products on the soaps. Do special marathons on the weekends- best weddings, best villains, etc. 12:00 PM/ 6:00 PM/ 12:00 AM/ 6:00 AM Search for Tomorrow- 2 episodes 1:00 PM/ 7:00 PM/ 1:00 AM / 7:00 AM As the World Turns 2:00 PM/ 8:00 PM/ 2:00 AM/ 8:00 AM Another World 3:00 PM/ 9:00 PM/ 3:00 AM/ 9:00 AM Guiding Light 4:00 PM/ 10:00 PM/ 4:00 AM/ 10:00 AM Texas 5:00 PM/ 11:00 PM/ 5:00 AM/ 11:00 AM Edge of Night 5:30 PM/ 11:30 PM/ 5:30 AM/ 11:30 AM The Catlins

Name a Critical Year on a Soap
1989 was also a pivotal year for Another World. The year begins with Iris in the thick of things after her return to Bay City hiding the fact the she was the chief of Bennett Publishing that tried to take over Coty Publishing. Evan Bates was hiding the fact that he was Janice Frame's son. Felicia was hiding her past as Fanny Grady and being stalked by a mystery man. Felicia's birthday party would start a major umbrella story for the entire show when she tries to shoot her mystery stalker in a hall of mirrors, but Jason Frame winds up being the murder victim. At the murder trial, everyone's secret are exposed on the witness stand. By May, many former characters return to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Cory Publishing to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Another World. All of this was playing out with the real life news that Douglass Watson who played the show's patriarch Mac Cory died in real life. Six weeks later the show would play out Mac's death on screen. This was probably the last time that AW would acknowledge and use its history in the storyline and while the show would go on, things would never be quite right on the show without the character of Mac Cory.

In January 1988, NBC Daytime created a Where's Betty contest where fans had to guess how many times Betty White popped up on ANOTHER WORLD, DAYS OF OUR LIVES and SANTA BARBARA over the course of a week. The winner was to receive a trip for two to Hawaii and $1,000 cash. Here Betty's appearance on ANOTHER WORLD as "Brenda Barlowe" who calls Douglass Watson's Mac Cory

In hindsight, what moment would have been the perfect ending to your soap (before things got awful)?
Another World could have ended in July 1997 when the show aired the 25th Anniversary episode for Victoria Wyndham- the show was full of great flashbacks and Wyndham gives a speech at the end of the episode that was meant to be a salute to fans- "Thank you for choosing to be part of my life. I love you very much."

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Potter produced ATWT in the early 60s, then produced Another World in 1964-65, then Our Private World in 1965. He returned to Another World until he left to produce The Doctors from 1967-73. Then he went to Guiding Light from 1976-83. He would return to AW from 1983-84 when he retired at the end of the year.

ALL: Characters you are surprised lasted so long
Clarice lasted 11 years on Another World from February 7, 1975 to August 15, 1986. Clarice was never a major star on the show, but she was given some stories throughout the years- having a baby with Robert Delaney, being raped by Jerry Grove, Carl Hutchins hitman, Ross, planted a bomb in the Ewing car intended for Larry, but Clarice survived when the car exploded. They created a family for Clarice, and her father married Ada. This made her Rachel's step sister, and probably contributed to her longevity on the show.

Like with every long running soap with mediocre ratings, too many changes in writers and producers. And the switch from CBS to NBC did SFT no favors. Ironically, the show was at its best on NBC at the time of its cancellation in 1986. SFT had one of the best final episodes of a soap. Did P&G and NBC really think in 1982 that the entire CBS audience would follow the show to NBC? The average rating of the show on CBS during 1981-82 season was 6.8. The average rating of the show on on NBC during the 1981-82 season was 3.4.
