A visit to Jason's website reveals that the character Austin mentioned as possibly marrying Julie is Wilbur Austin played by Arland Schubert. I've never seen the character mentioned before, lett alone as possibly hooking up with one of the lead characters. Retro TV needs to get vintage Days on the air as a companion to The Doctors.

Entering her second year as headwriter Rita Lakin worked out a deal with Colgate,NBC etc to co write the show with Rick Edelstein, citing exhaustion at being solo head writer. They each got 16 weeks off per year and shared the more than $100,000 pay check. Lakin communicated with exec producer Allen Potter by mail and a 10 min phone call each week. Rita Lakin was always based in LA while writing TD Also,CC Courtney should be arriving soon.

No I didn't see them, which puzzles me as Variety stated they would appear on the Wed May 22nd episode. First appearance of Rick Edelstein as co headwriter.

3 actors played Ted in various stints. This time around it was Luke Reilly. That was a good use of that character as it draw on history(something AW needed at that time) and gave Brian something to do. I am surprised that with all the upheaval in the early 80's,Brian Bancroft was one of the few characters that hung around, although he was never given much to do. I think that Philece Sampler would have made a much better Nicole than Donna and maybe the character would have had more substance than Lauri Landry's brief stint. As for Anne Howard, she might as well been a different character. After Richard Bekins the other Jamies couldn't compare.Making him a doctor was unnecessary as there was plenty for him to do at Cory Publishing.

Wonder if and when Mel Winkler will turn up as Dr Simon Roberts, the role attributed to Conrad Roberts in some cast lists? After TD Ann Whiteside (Ruth) was on EON throughout Summer/Fall of 68 ELEANOR MARCHECK (played by Ann Whiteside) Cruel matron at Redstone Prison, where Julie Jamison Hillyer was incarcerated during her trial for killing Harry Constable, in the summer and autumn of 1968. Matron Marcheck pretended to befriend Julie, but later testified against her in court, twisting Julie's innocent confessions into damning evidence.

Well in 1963, KT Stevens (Peggy) was 44 and Linda Dano was 20 so not likely.

Although the man in the park looked a little like Albert Ottenheimer,I think he and his wife should turn up later in the week, which Variety says is a Wednesday. The first time we've been 'outside'. Penny refers to meeting Liz before so I guess the was when Christopher Norris was playing her. In 68 Norris had moved onto Edge of Night as Sarah Capice so I guess TD had to recast with Jami. I was quite impressed with Althea's apartment set as it had an entrance, terrace and kitchen/dining room and was set up so the camera could show both rooms from different angles. Speaking of sets, have others noticed how the hospital set is configured so that each door of the elevator supposedly leads to a different floor but it is actually just the other side of the same set? Does that make sense? Had to laugh when Liz said the LP she gave Penny was supposedly the loudest rock group around and then Penny played a cover tune of a sweet Motown song.

Look for actor Albert Ottenheimer and his actress wife Mies Waalewijn to appear on the Wed May 22nd episode according to Variety. This may clear up the issue of what day we are actually up to. Ottenheimer was primarily a stage actor who was blacklisted in the 50's. His other soap role was as Moe Bachman on How To Survive a Marriage. He toured Europe in West Side story where he met and married his wife, a Dutch actress, and they returned to the U.S. Pictured with Woody Allen in Annie Hall

Don Stewart was not happy that Mike Bauer became a grandfather. He had been one of the most popular leading men of the 70's and this coupled with his desire to be paired with a younger woman could be seen as ego but maybe he saw the writing on the wall and was fighting to keep his position. Seeing Mart Hulswit dumped for a younger actor must have had an impact.also.

Jami Fields today Jami Fields appeared in over 100 television and radio commercials as a model and child actress in the 1960’s – 1980’s. She appeared in the very first made-for-TV movie “See How They Run” on NBC co-starring with John Forsythe, George Kennedy and several other stars of the day. On Broadway, she was in the original production of “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”, in Prime Time TV she appeared in dramas and variety shows including multiple appearances on the “Garry Moore Show.” In Daytime, she is best known for playing Penny Davis on “The Doctors”. Stepping behind the footlights, Jami was on the production staff for “The Guiding Light” and “As The World Turns”, adding the Director’s Guild to her performer’s union affiliations. She was thrilled to be invited to join the Twelfth Night Club @1980 in the Club’s renowned performance of ‘Stage Door’. In more recent years, Jami has had the great fortune to work as a marketing director for many of America’s most well known magazine publications, both at Time Inc, and the Hearst Corporation. A true New Yorker, Jami is also a ceramic artist, and maintains two pottery studios in Manhattan.

Looking back over past storylines,I wondered how it would have played if Liz Matthews had been revealed as Iris' mother? Liz had a child she gave up for adoption as she was determined to marry into the Matthews family. She got pregnant by a man she truly cared for but he was married so she married Will Matthews. This could explain why she always had a poor relationship with her daughter Susan as this reminded her of the daughter she gave away. Imagine Iris reaction to having Liz as a mother. Susan was brought into the story at that time and they could have played an Iris/Susan rivalry.Maybe Iris got involved with Dan as a revenge on Susan. Although a bit of a soapy coincidence the dramatic impact on those core characters might have made for some riveting storylines. What do you think?

Looking at Jason 47's wonderful page I notice that in the 60's and 70's new characters were always recurring at first and then became contract. Does anyone know the reason for this? Wasn't it possible that an actor could move on and force the show to recast?(not that it seemed to happen).

Y&R: Old Articles
Great to see these episodes. This is the first time I've seen Tom Selleck,Susan Brown and Paul Stevens on Y&R. So Susan's character Fran was an old friend of Stu's and a possible romantic interest.Any one know how long she was on and how far her story progressed? Didn't Lanna Saunders play Mrs Selleck? I know Y&R wanted to sign Tom but he refused so they eventually dropped him. I wonder what story Bill Bell would have played had Jed stayed on. Maybe a variation of the Lance/Lorie story?

Bethel's delivery and take on the character reminds me of Constance Ford - the lack of eye contact and rolling of eyes. It will be interesting if Lydia takes that on, especially when she was temp replacing.. The Anderson story seems quite daring for the time.Notice he referred to 'the spirit' rather than 'god' - no way would that have been allowed. Looks like this and possibly the Ed Stark story may be the next short arc stories. I wonder how long they kept up this format of having these stories weave in and out? In the initial eps we saw Rick Edelstein was story editor and then his name no longer appeared.Later in 68 he becomes co headwriter,so I wonder what went down there?

Judy Dewey, who filled in for Laura Malone on AW during Malone's maternity leave replaced her as Blaine. Wasn't Jess Walton rushed in to replace Brenda Dickson as Y&R's Jill with no firm guarantee of taking over the role?

Re Denise Alexander. I think she wanted out once her contract was up as she is an LA girl at heart. Also, the role of Mary never lived up to potential or created the kind of buzz as did her roles as Lesley on GH or Susan on DOOL. As for the McKinnons, all the children had been dropped - MJ,Kathleen and Cheryl and Ben had never been brought back so Vince and Mary were parents of absentee children, thus limiting their relevance on the canvas. Only Jake was around as a surrogate child. I think Lemay would have gone back to the Frames and Matthews as the Loves and McKinnons, supposedly the next core families had not been nurtured. There were a lot of previous characters that had potential to return and the next generation for story possibilities. Evan Frame was an example of that.
