  1. @soapfan770 I chalk up PB's 1991 and 1992 Emmy wins to weak competition in the Lead Actor category. I was not riveted by his Emmy winning episode that was rebroadcast during the classics and the clips shown during the Emmy broadcasts those years.

It was posted here before that EB would not submit his name for Emmy consideration. He also didn't mention much about the Emmys in his book and I don't recall EB commenting in the soap press about the years he lost (1987, 1990, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2004).

  2. 1980s music to me will forever be defined by four artists: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson.

1990s music to me was the R&B/Hip Hop decade, from New Jack Swing to West Coast Gangsta Rap to East Coast Rap. 1998 was probably the last good year for music. It's been downhill since then.

OMG! No wonder all the fights between Jack and Victor there 1992-93 felt so raw.

Yeah, it looked like they were ready to kill each other. I'd say their beef went back to 1989, the tension between them was visible from the onset, and I felt it was there until maybe 2005 or so. EB didn't really delve into details of the beef in his book, but he seemed regretful of it.

  4. @Paul RavenMaybe for Y&R some of the big 1970s storylines/characters could have been an influence, ie. Chris/Snapper/Greg triangle, Chris's rape, Leslie/Lorie/Brad triangle, Lorie's parentage, Lance/Lucas/Leslie/Lorie quadrangle. Then again, brothers fighting over a girl, sisters fighting over a guy, heroines that are rape victims, and parentage reveals are classic soap elements. Also Victor's 1980s character arc, introduced as a villain but with the unexpected popularity of the pairing with Nikki, the orphanage backstory, and his other storylines, Victor was more of an anti-hero by the end of the decade.

  5. We often talk about the Dallas/Dynasty influence on daytime soaps but how about the opposite direction, daytime influence on the 1980s big four primetime soaps.

For example, characters/situations from Y&R being used on CBS's big three primetime soaps, or characters/situations from ABC's big three daytime soaps being used on Dynasty.

The scene you mention is in the vault under '81 Clips - 12-24 Victor Nikki Christmas

That's where I saw it. Maybe someday the full episode will surface and we'll know for sure if December 1981 was the first reference to Victor growing up in an orphanage.

  7. Remember in 2018 there was a flashback to Victor and Nikki's first Christmas together in 1981? In the scene shown Nikki mentions Victor having an unhappy childhood. Was this when it was first revealed that Victor grew up in an orphanage? I can't find any recaps from December 1981 that delve into the details of the Christmas episodes.
