Knots Landing was a spinoff done right. The Colbys was a spinoff done wrong. At least Aaron Spelling learned his lesson by time 90210/Melrose came along, in that Melrose cut the ties w/ 90210 fairly early and there were no crossovers afterwards.

Even with the crossovers, Knots Landing never felt like a second hour of Dallas in a different setting. Knots Landing was able to carve its own identity apart from Dallas, and I think a big part of that was Knots Landing being community-based whereas Dallas was family/business conflict-based.

Rebecca Barnes Wentworth abandoned her husband and children, remarried a wealthy man, became widowed, and inherited her late husband's business. Sound familiar?

That episode was a Dallas crossover that aired Friday 10 pm.

I wonder if Nicollette Sheridan being elevated to the main cast in Fall 1988 and becoming front-burner lead over the course of the season played in a part in Donna Mills decision to walk in Spring 1989. Paige practically ate the show in the final five seasons. Donna Mills was smart to walk away when she did.

Not to derail this thread, but in various shows threads here it's been said that the HIV storylines in the 1980s and 1990s have not aged well. I remember Y&R Jessica Blair being a summer social issue storyline with dialogue that was heavy-handed and very PSA yet the execution of the storyline was not a realistic portrayal of an AIDS patient. I say start with May 1989 when Springfield learns Roger survived the fall off the cliff in Santo Domingo. Robert Calhoun becomes EP in June 1989 and GL finally hits its stride after a few rough years.
