Christine was too saintly for Brad and she had no clout, and there's also the factor that Brad was at Jabot when she was a teen model there plus she was once his stepsister-in-law. What did you think of Bill Bell alluding to Victor/Christine in 1996? For 25 years I couldn't get past the ick factor of LLB being Bill Bell's daughter and her being half EB's age at the time but I think Bill Bell's planned Victor/Nikki/Brad/Ashley quad got derailed due to SS not passing the chemistry tests w/ EB and DD so I can see why Bill Bell pretty much put Christine in the Ashley role. Yeah Bill Bell dusted off some of the 1984, 1985 Victor/Ashley storyline for Victor/Christine but we did get two epic Nikki/Christine confrontations plus being totally shallow here EB glowed up during that storyline. 2002 Christine got placed in Michael's orbit romantically (which should not have happened due to the sexual harassment and attempted rape a decade earlier) and CLB glowed up too. Who knew LLB had the powers to cause glow ups 🤣

Falcon Crest
Agree. That final season felt like a totally different show. There was a darkness and sadness that surrounded everything and it was painful to sit through. Sitting through season 8 was bad enough but the final season was worse. Season 7 it started going off the rails and that had to do with the core families having shrunken and the supporting characters and guest stars in short arcs not really working. Seasons 8 and 9 were off the rails plus budget mode. The core cast shrunk further and the new arrivals didn't work plus after effects of the writer's strike and changing times. I break down the seasons as 1 good start, 2 and 3 peak, 4 still good but signs of tanking showing, 5 and 6 tanking, 7 signs of going off the rails showing, 8 and 9 off the rails plus budget mode. I'd rank the seasons as 3, 2, 1, 4, 6, 5, 7, 8, 9. If CBS hadn't been such a mess in the late 1980s, none of the primetime soaps would have lasted into the 1990s. I'll always maintain that Spring 1988 was the natural end point for primetime soaps as a genre.

Spring 1983 to Spring 1986 Cricket showed up on school breaks (spring, summer, Christmas). She wasn't annoying in small doses. It was so odd seeing a scene from 1983 where Jack was praising Cricket's modelling shoot, considering what was to come by Summer 1986 and what went down by the end of the decade.

Cricket ate the show from second half of 1986 until the end of 1989. I will give credit to LLB improving as an actress during the date rape storyline. In the 1990s Bill Bell wrote lawyer Christine as the main heroine but she wasn't eating the show as much. I agree that LLB aged well (she looks so much like her mother) and doesn't look over-surgeried or over-injected, but I suspect a nose job in the early 1990s.

The Young and the Restless: March 2023 Discussion Thread
You're welcome. I don't know 100% when the actual anniversary episodes will be, but based on March 26 being a Sunday I figure March 27-31 makes the most sense.

Ratings from the 80's
The peak of 14 soaps lasted from July 30-December 28, 1984. The peak lineups in the 1980s in terms of number of soaps by network: CBS: 5 from January 1-February 1, 1980 - Love of Life, Y&R, Search for Tomorrow, As the World Turns, Guiding Light. ABC: 6 from June 27, 1983-December 28, 1984 - Loving, Ryan's Hope, All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, The Edge of Night. NBC: 5 from March 29-December 31, 1982 - The Doctors, Search for Tomorrow, Days, Another World, Texas. The 1980s began with 13 soaps and ended with 12 soaps. Here's now the network lineups changed over the course of the decade. CBS: Love of Life finale February 1, 1980. Y&R expanded to 1 hour February 4, 1980. Search for Tomorrow CBS finale March 26, 1982. Capitol run March 29, 1982-March 20, 1987. B&B premiere March 23, 1987. Started the 1980s with 5 soaps and ended the 1980s with 4 soaps. ABC: Loving premiere June 27, 1983. The Edge of Night finale December 28, 1984. Ryan's Hope finale January 13, 1989. Started the 1980s with 5 soaps and ended the 1980s with 4 soaps. NBC: Texas run August 4, 1980-December 31, 1982. Search for Tomorrow NBC run March 29, 1982-December 26, 1986. The Doctors finale December 31, 1982. Santa Barbara premiere July 30, 1984. Generations premiere March 27, 1989. Started the 1980s with 3 soaps and ended the 1980s with 4 soaps. ETA: Just realized that twice in the 1980s there were 14 soaps across the three networks: March 29-December 31, 1982 and July 30-December 28, 1984.

Do you think JM glowed up? Normally I would recognize a glow up when I see one but I'm not seeing one here.

Ratings from the 80's
@soapfan770 11 am, 11:30 am, and 12:30 pm ET were dead zones for both ABC and NBC. The Price is Right and Y&R destroyed everything in their paths. The Price is Right moved to 11 am ET on April 23, 1979. ABC shows that fell victim before The View became the occupant of that slot (not counting reruns of primetime shows): Family Feud, Loving, The Newlywed Game, The Love Report, Trivia Trap, All Star Blitz, Love American Style, Hot Streak, Fame Fortune and Romance, Double Talk, Bargain Hunters, The Home Show, Mike and Maty, Caryl & Marilyn. NBC shows that fell victim before they gave up that slot (not counting reruns of primetime shows): High Rollers, Wheel of Fortune, David Letterman Show, Password Plus, Battlestars, Texas, Hit Man, Dream House, Scrabble, Win Lose or Draw, Marsha Warfield Show, To Tell the Truth, A Closer Look, Trialwatch, Cover to Cover, One on One with John Tesh, Classic Concentration, Dr. Dean, Faith Daniels Show, Family Secrets, John and Leeza from Hollywood, Jane Whitney Show, The Other Side, Leeza. Y&R moved to 12:30 pm ET on June 8, 1981. ABC shows that fell victim before they gave up that slot: Ryan's Hope, Loving, The City, Port Charles. NBC shows that fell victim before they gave up that slot: The Doctors, Search for Tomorrow, Wordplay, Scrabble, Generations, Trialwatch, A Closer Look, Faith Daniels Show, Scattergories, Caesar's Challenge.

Ratings from the 1990s
Seinfeld blew up in 1993/94, when it took over Thursday 9 pm and went from 25th to 3rd. 1994/95 Seinfeld becoming #1 plus the breakout successes of ER and Friends revived NBC's fortunes and ushered in NBC primetime's next dominant era.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
1980s family sitcoms are very much products of their time and many of them have not aged well at all. As for sitcoms in 1988/89, it was after effects of the writer's strike that caused a lot of them to feel off and the breakout success of Roseanne was a sign that times and tastes were changing.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
1987/88 I feel was the start of the decline of drama series. It seems very few hit dramas were left at this point. CBS: Murder, She Wrote was a hit but Cagney & Lacey, Dallas, Falcon Crest, Knots Landing; Magnum, P.I.; Simon & Simon were aging, and The Equalizer was not showing growth. Spring 1988 saw the end of Cagney & Lacey and Magnum, P.I. and one newer drama that showed no growth during its short run (Houston Knights). The new dramas from 1987/88 that would return were Beauty and the Beast, Jake and the Fatman, Tour of Duty, Wiseguy. ABC: Moonlighting was a hit but Dynasty was aging, Hotel was fading, and MacGyver and Spenser: For Hire were not showing growth. Spring 1988 saw the end of Hotel and Spenser: For Hire and two newer dramas that showed no growth during their short runs (Max Headroom, Ohara). The new dramas from 1987/88 that would return were Thirtysomething, China Beach, HeartBeat. NBC: Matlock and L.A. Law were hits and Hunter was showing signs of growth but Miami Vice and Highway to Heaven were fading and St. Elsewhere was aging. Spring 1988 saw the end of St. Elsewhere and four newer dramas that showed no growth during their short runs (Our House, Crime Story, Rags to Riches, The Bronx Zoo). The new dramas from 1987/88 that would return were In the Heat of the Night and Sonny Spoon.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
The primetime soaps in the context of drama series history on their respective networks: Dallas and Knots Landing 14 season runs tie them w/ NCIS: Los Angeles, and places them behind Gunsmoke, NCIS, Lassie, CSI, Criminal Minds. Falcon Crest 9 season run ties it w/ Perry Mason, The Waltons; Walker, Texas Ranger; Touched by an Angel, JAG, CSI: NY, and places it behind Gunsmoke, NCIS, Lassie, CSI, Criminal Minds, Dallas, Knots Landing, NCIS: Los Angeles, Blue Bloods, original Hawaii Five-O; Murder, She Wrote; CSI: Miami, Hawaii Five-0 reboot. Dynasty 9 season run ties it w/ The F.B.I and The Love Boat, and places it behind Grey's Anatomy and NYPD Blue.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
1987/88 the peak of sitcoms, taking up the bulk of the Top 10. NBC sitcom dominance was at its height, taking 6 of the Top 10 spots. This season would be the highest finishes for A Different World, The Golden Girls, Growing Pains, Who's the Boss, ALF. The Cosby Show third consecutive #1 season and it was still a killer show. 18 out 23 episodes finished #1 in the week of their original broadcast, three episodes finished 2nd, and two episodes finished 3rd. Murder, She Wrote dropped from 4th to 9th. This season they faced time slot competition from Family Ties, which itself dropped from 2nd to 17th after the move to Sunday 8 pm. No primetime soaps in the Top 20. This was the season they all started going off the rails and were creatively exhausted by the end of the season. 1987/88 just feels like the natural end point of primetime soaps as a genre. CBS primetime lineup tanked this season and they dropped to 3rd. I feel ABC having three big sports events (World Series, Super Bowl, Winter Olympics) had a lot to do with their finishing 2nd this season.
