I'm sick to death of the Margaret Court defenders. She was a complete [!@#$%^&*]. I didn't even like Serena. I sure do now.

Anybody Ever Write their own Soap?
Gosh I'm reading through these posts and I'm convinced...there are people that could do better than what we are seeing now. Far better.

Anybody Ever Write their own Soap?
I lost everything but I had a storyline Bible I started in the 1980s when I was dealing with a lot in my life and I dreamed of a world where I lived with people who were like me and it was a way of escape. It took place in Greenwich Village in New York and most of the characters were Gay and Lesbian. I called it "The Story of Us". It dealt with what was obvious at the time - equal rights, the friendships and love stories among the characters, HIV/AIDS, and some of the characters were models, actors, writers for the NY Times, coffee shops and diners, bars etc. I remember one of my male characters was a school teacher who lost his job because the school administration found out after he was outed and a student accused him of sexual abuse, and it was a lie in an attempt to blackmail him to get him to change his grades. In the early 90's a lot of stories and scenes centered around a techno and disco dance bar, with drugs like Ex, drug addition, alcoholism, etc. And I had a group of characters who would take in homeless young gay men and lesbian girls who were excommunicated by their families and would search them out in homeless shelters. My big event of the year was the annual Valentines Day party where all of the characters from the different buildings would get together and the show would end with them all singing "What the World Needs Now". I wish I had saved it. And I was so disappointed because in the late 90's a movie came out called "The Story of Us" and it made me mad because I thought - that's MY TITLE!

The Tennis Thread
I'm a sports junkie and nothing is the same now. They're trying to go on with the NHL and Major League Baseball but with no fans/audience it's just hollow. Football will be the same for me. Tennis was the one thing I was looking forward to just because during points the fans pretty much have to stay quiet, and sure it's great to see crowd reaction after certain points is great, but for the most part during the points the camera stays on the players. So Tennis isn't as much the same as other large crowd sports. Disappointed that so many players are dropping out, but it's understandable. And really the ones that have to fly from overseas. I wouldn't fly right now. And if I'm a U.S. player or any of the ones that just live here, I'd drive to the US Open rather than fly.

Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
It's only a matter of time until we all get it. People are stopping with the distancing, the masks, all of it. And a vaccine is not going to cover all strains. It will be like the flu where you get the shot and it covers the first strain but you can still get another strain later in the year. If you don't get the shot right away it's already outdated when you get it. Very depressing. And that picture is depressing with Spain exploding with it. And what I don't understand is the anger - if you don't wear a mask and do distancing - stay away from me and they don't think about their families. They may not get it but they're taking it home to their families.

@victoria foxton Scary. My sister owns a house in Pawley's Island (south of Myrtle Beach, SC) - and they never shut down correctly and they didn't open up correctly. 2 of my sisters were there about a month ago with the nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews....when I called them I said "what is all of that NOISE?" She said - oh we're playing putt putt. They went to Go Karts, shopping, eating at restaurants, a water park...business as usual. Not wearing masks. We're about to have a complete resurgence - friends in Florida - their kids went back to school in person learning. They're scared to death - they said it's only a matter of time until they close it down. Just one kid needs to test positive and they're all going to have to be in quarantine. I asked her - about lunch and everything and she said nope - they go to the cafeteria as usual. And instead of leaving the kids where they are and having the teachers change classrooms, all the kids just change classrooms as usual. Wouldn't you think they would have the teachers change class rooms and limit the number of people running into each other? Meanwhile, someone I knew from High School (UNFRIEND) kept posting about how the whole "COVID thing" is a hoax and a lie and it's the Democrats doing all of this. TRUMPER. I said, my God - are the Democrats hauling all of these people off to an island and 165,000 in the US really aren't dead? He replied, well it's all the elderly and people who were unhealthy and it's no worse than the yearly flu. I said my God you've lost your mind. There are NOT this many deaths from flu in a year and this has been since December or January. And it's NOT just the "Elderly" and what difference does the age make? So if you're older and die it's no big deal? Meanwhile I don't think he knows he's 52. I just turned 50. It's like - honey - you are way past middle age.

Why do you watch soaps, and has the reason changed?
I still say this exact thing. People think young people only wanted (and want to watch) young people. My generation really didn't. Yes, I loved, Rick, Mindy, Phillip, and Beth on Guiding Light. Harley, Frank, Alan Michael and Hart and Cassie. But I equally loved Henry Chamberlain and HB Lewis. They were like the Grandfathers I never got to know. On ATWT - I loved Emma Snyder and Cal Striklyn. And the scoundrel John Dixon. On Y&R I equally loved John Abbott/Jerry D. and when they did the classics I forgot how handsome he was and what a great actor. We liked the shows for the stories and the generations of people, not just the young people. They were all interesting. Roger and Maureen's unlikely friendship on Guiding Light. Lillian's and Ed's affair. Things were just written differently then and you cared about what was happening on our "stories". I don't care about Abby, Phyllis, Chelsea, Chance, Theo, and I can keep the list going on Y&R. It's a shell of what it was. This is blasphemy but I actually liked what they tried to do with the Rosales family. At some point you have to get new blood in. They're dying on the vine now. When COVID lockdown started I said - Y&R is going to go down. It's habitual for people and there isn't anything happening. People called me crazy. Well, we're about to find out. I did see a commercial for Y&R about new episodes today which was the first I've seen - during Price is Right.

Why do you watch soaps, and has the reason changed?
Y&R was the first I watched in the late 70s with one of my sisters and Mom and Granny. Then I started watching both ATWT and GL because those were the ones my Mom and Granny watched and I grew to love them more than Y&R. My sister converted to ABC; we stayed with CBS and had to fight over our only TV. In the 80's we got a VCR and I taped them and would watch when i got home from school. Taped when I went to college and throughout the 90s when I started working. I watched because of the relationships - and GL for the 4 musketeers and when I was younger for the adventure and teen stories. I loved Josh and Reva on GL. I loved all of the Bauers and Lewises and Coopers. ATWT and GL were so well written then. Loved Steve/Betsy/Craig triangle, Lily and Holden, and the Snyders, and Kim vs. Lisa and Lisa vs. Lucinda. Y&R I watched at first because I loved the Jill vs. Katherine rivalry and then I was a pre-teen/young teen and loved the Traci vs. Lauren rivalry, and who didn't love seeing pool boy Brad/Don Diamont with his shirt off? LOL.

Y&R to air classic episodes
I've noticed this has happened multiple times now. Who is doing their press releases and does anyone verify or do one ounce of research? I know it's picky but to me it's not. When you get it THAT wrong it's clear the person has no knowledge of the show and is probably young compared to me. I'm 50, so I know because I was watching then and would be able to pick that mistake in 3 seconds.

Y&R to air classic episodes
I watched the whole show today. Man - 1986 and the show was that good. I forgot how good Terry Lester was - he was so natural. Multiple interesting stories going on - angst between Jack and Brad and Traci, Julia and Ashley's scenes, the Paul Centerfold story involving his friend Andy, Lauren, his Mom and Dad, Amy...the storylines were so much more interesting than now. These classic episodes although I haven't watched all of them really show how glaringly bad what I was watching of Y&R with anything "new".

Y&R to air classic episodes
Thanks kalbir - I was about to ask the same question. My guide on FIOS says 1996 and when I saw it I was like - there is no way it was 1996. All of these characters were on in the 80's...Andy, Amy, Mary, Carl Williams, Julia, Matthew, Terry Lester as Jack, Gina... And I was down to barely watching before COVID but has CBS lost its mind? Not to promote the return of the top Daytime soap? And one of their own top Daytime shows after Price is Right? How much effort does it take to film a small promo? They did pretty good still winning while running re-runs for a couple of months...It's like CBS has just given up. Their ratings were dropping before COVID and they made no changes and they just let it happen.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
It was horrible. He stared straight ahead. We both put our hands up and I asked permission to get out of the car. This was when there were no dashcams. He could have shot us both and lied.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I said I got pulled over many times. I gave one example. I understand the situation of black people in this country because I have seen it. I have experienced it first hand by dating a black man. I grew up next to 2 black families and saw how they were treated. I've only dated 3 men seriously in my life. Don't judge unless you know. I just don't agree with VR's take on her Y&R obsession and I don't even know why she would want to go back. She's worked since. Other actors haven't said anything. She should be imploring them to say how bad their work situation is.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I actually do understand because I dated a very handsome African American man for a year. I never got pulled over in my own car while driving so many times. Once the officer said my tail light was out. I asked him which one. He said the left. I said, is it OK if I get out of the car so that you can show me - the car is only 1 year old and I just had it inspected. And I said to my boyfriend and asked the officer - is it ok if he reaches across the console and hits the brake? And the officer said yes. Went around back, and both lights lit up. I said, well that's odd...looks like everything is OK. He said, yeah, I just wanted to make sure everything was OK. My boyfriend at the time had dreads. I'm sure he saw me with a black man and thought something must be wrong. I used to say while growing up in the 70's...I knew I was gay. And I said to myself well at least I'm not black and a black lesbian. So I don't know how VR was treated really, but ask the black actors to speak out. VR just asks people to stop watching. She should be asking the other black actors and actresses to speak out as well. She doesn't. She asks the audience to stop watching, but if her experience and African American experiences on the show are so bad - ask them to speak out as well.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
And this is why white people are not speaking out. If we speak out, we don't have the right because we're not black. If we don't speak out we're being griped at because we didn't speak out. I have been to 3 Black Lives Matter rallies this week. Check yourself. If you're white, everything is white privilege now. I grew up very poor. You would be wrong.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I was just such a fan of hers and over the years her griping has started to bother me. I don't remember KSJ or Shemar Moore or many black actors/actresses complaining about how they were treated on Y&R. Something just comes across as a trouble maker. Crystal Khalil (SP wrong I'm sure). Mishael Morgan. Whoever played Olivia. And linking your former working relationship to Black Lives Matter is just weird to me when she had such success. She was invited back for the KSJ memorial, and she's worked since Y&R. Why is she so against Y&R? Someone will say this is white privilege, and I am white, but a gay male. But I feel like VR could be the EP, Head Writer, Director, and own the show and she still wouldn't be happy.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I just read the VR article. Honestly I'm so tired of hearing her. It's old now and she just doesn't stop. If mouthy whiny complaining white women can be called "Karen" then she's a Karen.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
Kinda related to the topic - just don't have characters have an accent and lose them. It's so stupid. They did it with the Yack/Jack story on Y&R with the Latina. Suddenly one day she had no Latina accent when it was so overdone before. On B&B there were Zoey and the guy who was supposedly an Avant cousin or something...and their excuse was a "game" of who could lose their British accent for longer. Just don't do accents on soaps. It's so stupid. The only ones I remember maintaining them was Uncle Stavros and Eleni on Guiding Light. So many others fail miserably. The Y&R one I mentioned was terrible...she literally had no accent one day.
