I think equipment in Tennis has stabilized - I think the composite materials that came along in the 80's - changed a little more but people like Sampras still used one of the first Wilson pro-staffs all the way through his career, and Roger's is basically still mostly the same. I can't imagine someone inventing some other material that will replace rackets as we see them today, just due to the size of the court - there can't be a lot more power in the size of the court. My friends formed a wooden racket league and they love it. It's kind of sad because it would be boring to watch on TV given everything has to be bigger, better, faster, etc...but it sure does take a lot more skill to use a wooden racket. I think about baseball and how they allow aluminum composite bats up through college - but if you play pro, they have to use wooden bats because you shouldn't need the technology if you're good enough. They have to adjust backward. I wish there was a way to bring something like that back to Tennis.

Chrissy threw some shade yesterday about Margaret and I cracked up - said something like, well it's not really a comparison even if Serena were not to break her record - since most of her Majors were the Australian when the field was only 32 or 40 total women and most all of the players were Australian - even good players from other nations didn't go to the Australian back then. And her 2nd most Slam was the US Open, then Wimbledon. She was best on grass and 3 of the 4 slams were on grass then and people forget that. Imagine how many Serena and Venus would have if 3 of the 4 Slams were on grass. So I looked back on Wiki and she's right...there were years after Billie Jean won the Australian and then didn't even go. Everyone is Australian in the 60s and even up through the early 70s.

Well I had a feeling the first women's semi would be a snoozer and I'm betting both will be.

I'm DC. Can't wait to see our Dicktater running tanks through the streets, flyovers, other military shows of strength. On a day when it should be about the Country, he'll make it about himself with a political rally. Like his new Best Bud Rocketman Dicktater who does the same thing from North Korea who has members of his own family murdered. They talk about a woman winning President and breaking the glass ceiling, meanwhile we have a man busting through the concrete subterranean basement to see how low he can go. Disgusting. And speaking from the Lincoln Memorial! When he can then have some pictures taken looking out on the mall and have it photoshopped so that he can say more people were there than when Martin Luther King spoke! Watch, it's coming.

LOL. I've always liked Liam more...except when Chris was in Thor, then it would be a toss up.

It could be that she will never be great on clay or grass. I could see clay coming along because she has the game for it - but grass maybe never. It's happened before - Monica Seles, Tracy Austin...good on everything pretty much but grass.

What's interesting is that they were talking about all of her current projects (she's on like 3 shows or 2 shows and a movie or something), all of her current projects, and she mentioned all 3 - whatever they were, and she was on Guiding Light. But didn't mention she's been on B&B several times this year hahahahahaha. Good.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I was watching Live with Kelly and Ryan the other day and Robin Givens was on - and she mentioned being on Guiding Light. Rare these days that someone who came from Soaps mentions it, but those that do - usually on Kelly because she claims it proudly (from AMC). I remember Robin briefly but does anyone remember the character and storyline?

Unfortunately. We've had Presidents that I really disliked but I at least would listen to them speak. I dislike this one so much that the second I see his face on a news report or if it's State of the Union - I change the channel. I can't even stand to see him or hear him. I have no desire to even hear one word of anything he has to say because I truly do believe he's delusional and he has onset of Dementia. It's in his family and he's not young by any stretch. Didn't his Father pass of complications from it? I think it's already here for him.

He is a despicable human being with not a single good/redeeming quality. And he knows it and that people hate him and that's what really digs at him. His whole life is a joke and he will go down as the most hated President ever. That'll be another record for him to hold. Everything with him has to be the most, the biggest, the best, etc. even though it's not - but he will get the most hated President ever title. His supporters can cheer all they want but they have turned the world's opinions of us so far negative it will take years to recover. Maybe it's because I work for a European/German company and maybe others do not - but people in other countries think he's nuts and that we are all stupid for having elected him. And what really burns me up with him is his sudden China and trade being unfair when that's where he sourced most of the materials for his construction and Ivanka's clothing line was made there. I know because I looked at the tags. So they're all for getting their things done with China to make their money but don't want others to.

No one ever mentions it, but Jean Carol - when she took on the role of Nadine, won the Soap Opera Digest award for best/favorite newcomer. This was a huge deal given that everyone knew that NBC and ABC's fan clubs for DAYS and GH would send the magazines to members and buy many many copies and mail in the votes. If CBS did, it certainly was not for ATWT or GL. So for her to win an SOD award which was nothing more than a popularity contest, it said alot. The CBS/GL people could not have done it on their own...alot of other people voted for her. She did get a raw deal - I said in other places...Ellen Parker being let go (Maureen), was not the only nail in the coffin. They made the mistake of letting really popular actresses go...Jean Carol/Nadine, but I also think Jenna/Fiona Hutchinson. Her relationship with Henry was really nice.

Well she did say she was going to shove that ball down her [!@#$%^&*] throat. It kind of did happen. It’s out there. Then there kind of was the drunk doubles match with Venus where she stumbled around a lot and couldn’t stand up. Explained away by some unknown disease. She was drunk from the night before because she played within a few days later. Serena has always been a mess.

I don't care about the women's final - who knows...but the men's - if Thiem makes it through, Nadal will make meat out of him. Straight sets but will figure out how to make it last 3.5 or 4 hours. Only Rafa can beat someone 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 and have it take 2 and a half hours. For whatever reason I think the women's final will be a snoozer also. And Joker right now - uh, you can't stop playing because it's windy. What is going on with the weather over there? Usually people are in danger of heat exhaustion and people in the crowd are wearing puffy full coats and stocking hats???- The Tennis Thread
I would say that Madison Keys is just like Davenport but Lindsey did eventually win 3 slams. I just don't think Madison ever will win even one. Too many of these younger players are coming along that are better and they'll take her out in the Quarters or semi's every time. And there are still better players her age or even older who will take her out. Lindsey at least eventually found the grit here and there, although her ticks (kicking the tennis ball around and you knew that she was done then)...she eventually found it. Madison never will.- The Tennis Thread
I agree - women's was so boring for years. What's that statistic...for 30 or 40 years the number 1 womens player was either Chrissie, Martina N., Tracy Austin briefly, Steffi, or Monica (and Martina Hingis)...and they always won most of the slams. And the finals and semis were between those particular women that played during their respective time periods. They used to say that the field was very shallow of who could win against any of these people. I remember Conchita Martinez winning a weird Wimbledon final (crazy)...Sanchez-Vicario I think the French that year. But really during all of those years, the women I listed won pretty much everything. Very predictable. The men over all of those years changed hands...#1's would lose to someone out of the top 20 or 30...very unpredictable and people said it made the men's game more interesting. Now it's the women who are more interesting... And - what a stat. No women's teens this far since Capriati nearly 30 years ago. That's what they said...is that true? And Michael Chang sure looks old. Now I feel old.- The Tennis Thread
Have you seen the commercial...I think it's for glasses (eyeglasses)? I don't remember....but it's clearly Maria Sharapova screetching...I think an owl is watching a tennis match but the screetching is Maria....sounds just like her. I wonder if she got paid for it.- The Tennis Thread

People are so non-confrontational when it comes to men and things like this. I played Open-Level Volleyball 6's...for around 15 years, and also doubles, but one of the 6's teams I was on...became friends with all of the guys and their girlfriends and wives. One of the couples, Beth and Steve (married) - she was always having "accidents" and had crazy explanations. One night one of the guys had a house party and I was hanging out with the wives and girlfriends (naturally the most popular with them because I was their token Gay). I pulled Beth aside and asked her - does he beat you? Physical abuse? These excuses are a little crazy at this point. She denied it. Beth and Steve lived about 2 miles up the highway in a different development than mine. About a month later, she showed up and mine and my roomates' townhouse around 6:00 AM - I had the basement to myself. My roommate knocked on my bedroom door, and he said, "Greg, Beth is here and needs to see you". I was like, what? It's 6:00 in the morning...he flips on the stairway light and there she is at the top of the stairs, and my roommate looked completely white as a sheet. Her face was so badly cut, she was bleeding, bruised. She came downstairs and I said...have another accident? She said, No. And I know you know what this is. I said, what did he do to you this time? He had beaten her and put her face through a window. Took her to the hospital, then to the courthouse to file a restraining order. She had walked to my house up the highway. She lived with me for about a week, and then she moved in with my roommates' girlfriends in our development. During that week she lived with me, I called our Team Captain and said - if Steve is at the tournament this weekend, just know I'm not playing. I'll quit. You all know what's going on, do not deny it. Went to the tournament, and Steve was there. I said, OK, well you're without a Setter today, and from now on if he remains on the Team. I was shocked - as I walked away, the guys are like...wait, what's going on? Where are you going? I said, I just quit. They're like...NO...you can't. You're our only setter - I said, yep...we've been doing a 5-1 so one of you better learn how to set....quick. Team Captain huddles them together - wives and girlfriends looking on and says "Beth and Steve had a disagreement and Greg didn't agree with it, so he's quitting". Steve stood their very proudly, nodding. and what's crazy - he was the worst of the 5 hitters on the team. Got my backpack and walked toward the exit...all of the remaining wives and girlfriends stopped me and they said...they had begged their husbands/boyfriends to stand behind me, because they all knew...I had told them. Beth went back to Steve after about 2 months and it started up again I was told. They ended up moving away a few years later, and I've wondered if she's still alive. And it didn't matter. I found a new team...got picked up very quickly because I was a good setter and although short for a Volleyball player, was an Open Level Player and I could also hit. I stayed friends with some of them, played with some on different teams in later years. Not that Team Captain though. Maybe that's why this bothers me so much.- The Tennis Thread
My God. He should be blackballed for good. He'll recover in time and be back???? I had not really been following this at all but have been reading...I didn't know 1/4 of this stuff.- The Tennis Thread
Not that it bothered me that much because I don't like Kyrgios...but what a rotten early opponent/match to run into. Has he fallen that far down to run into Raonic this early? I kind of only follow the slams and a couple of other major tournaments during the year. - The Tennis Thread
