You touched on it at the beginning, but in fairness to Roger and Holly, roughly 75% of the show after Curlee and Demorest left in March until the end of the year was mostly tremendously uneventful and boring. Shame cause it's not like Curlee and Demorest left the show in an awful position. (Some mis-steps later in their tenure but nothing that couldn't be fixed). Also someone correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the church set Wheeler's office? It really is a shame cause Peapack absolutely could have worked, but it was done in such an amateur way it was sabotaged from the start.

This one could probably be in both threads, but I'll err on the side of all the good we got from it. Roger Thorpe got brought up in the previous page, but I want to specify how big of a risk it was to not only revisit the rape of Holly but also slowly drift the characters into each other's orbit romantically again. Sure 1994 basically took the wind out of the show's sails and maybe the payoff would have been better had Curlee had stayed, but the 3 years leading up to the reunion were wonderful storytelling.

I don't really know why anyone is surprised. Between roving groups of big bad villains escaping every six months and Rolf raising half of Salem from the dead, you'd think they would have this down. I have to admit I've been watching here and there. Mostly curiosity to see how they can pull this off with such a small budget. Gotta say, Holy crap. Carlivati is like a really bad fan fiction writer with ADHD. I give him points for creative ideas, but has no writer's instinct for tone, subtext, or any kind of follow through. He really needs a co-writer to rein him in. Badly.

Shhhhhhh..... They don't have to know that. Keep up the mystique.

I also don't find it a coincidence that Joan got replaced right as the switch from Paul Rauch to John Conboy was also announced. It may have been a mutual exit, but I wouldn't find it surprising if Conboy wanted Marj back in the role once she was done on AMC. IIRC Marj debuted on John's first episode as EP.

Just found out about this today. Color me surprised that a show that can barely handle more than 3 actors in a single scene together is re-doing a story steeped in special effects and makeup that will look hokey if done cheaply. Perhaps they should take a cue from GL, bring out the Peapack look and package it like Blair Witch. (I'm kidding.)

I don't know about Sheryll Hoffman, but Susan Strickler was a producer at AW during the 80s. She would become a director at GL during the late 90s.

Appreciate the shout out. I still try to lurk on here when I can. I got about 30 minutes in and had to stop for time but what I did see was really quite great even with Alan's numerous interruptions. It's amazing to me just how much she "got" that show and knew what it was supposed to be about when soo many people over the last 20 years of its life didn't. And the soaps still on today have a wonderful opportunity with pared down sets and casts to bring daytime back to the domestic dramas they used to be. Simple but still with rich subtext. But they want it both ways and want to still pretend it's the 80s. Oh well. We'll have to agree to disagree on the Roger/Maureen stuff. As much as I appreciated their friendship, that kind of exit would not have worked out. I'm torn about Maureen's death because longterm it was a bust. But the immediate material made for wonderful and the dialogue, my God. This is making me mourn the loss of Bandstand Mike's channel even more. Damn you YouTube.

The the-current-show-is-so-great-you-should-only-say-positive-things kind of fan. Those people can get bent.

I miss when soap dialogue used more than 3 syllable words. Those scripts on the Curlee GL and even the Sheffer ATWT/Days and Guza GH were really quite great. Now you just have everyone going on trying to sound like an ass. And especially in the Curlee GL, every character had a voice. You could tell a line written for Billy to one written for Holly or Ross or Nadine or the younger set.

I wonder if Marcy was an edict from JFP or higher up. Tangie lacked the vibrancy and the well-put-together feel the rest of the Curlee years had. "Hey, we got Marcy coming in for a splash, now find a character please?" or it could be Curlee already knew she was heading out and didn't want to lay out the character completely for the new writers. Either way, it kind of doomed the character.

Would have to agree. Kreizman had some decent ideas. It's just a shame his writing had about as much emotional depth as a frat house. Not to mention Wheeler blowing through so much story with her special Wednesday episodes.

Marj could have been good as Alex is they kept writing her as they did JoanAlex..and I like the use of the entire cast here and the clever use of the studio (Edge used to do that..they should have put more action at WSPR and used the studio that way." If I remember correctly, the episode before this was Taggart's official last show. Fitting since the final scene was of the bomb dropping down the stairs of the studio.

Honestly, as great as the country club scenes are, the scenes from the next episode between Roger and Alex are probably even better. She goes from scared to furious and then she levels the boom at Roger as she reveals her cards. Brilliant.

1. The Towers was built in 1990 and was the subject of a dispute between Roger and Billy. Billy won that fight by tricking Roger into burning a signed document. 2) I don't think anyone lived in Ross' house before but Ross moved into that house with his then-wife Carrie Todd in 1981 and then was used continuously until 2003. 3) I believe so, yes. But someone can confirm that one.

Think it was probably more to do with interference from CBS/PGP that caused Curlee to leave. You are right in that most writers/execs have generally been fairly complementary about working with JFP. You had the quashed A-M/Gilly romance in the fall of that 1993, plus a growing insistence to emulate the ABC shows that the network would start around this time. Not to mention that Ed Trach left PGP at around the same time that Curlee left. Ken Fitts would eventually cause havoc with all three shows.

It really is kind of ironic, cause 1980s and 1990s GL probably could have benefitted from the setting being in California. I mean 2 major multi-national companies chose a random Midwestern city to set up headquarters? Would have been far more logical if it were set in California.

Honestly, I think most of us were just glad the real Phillip returned and not psycho pod Phillip, the Grady crash-dummy death notwithstanding (the most unintentionally funny scene in GL history. I laughed so hard.)
