The young lady from Britain did it! The British press are going to be horrible to her. I haven’t been following their coverage. But they’re @ssholes. People thought this USO wasn’t gonna be sh!t without Federer, Nadal, and Serena, and it’s been a blast.

The night session on Ashe was a bummer: Krejcikova basically listless and Alcaraz retiring.

Garbiñe must be fuming watching this match.

And the Fernandez story continues. I’m sorry but my heart can’t take these close matches. The most compelling Major tournament in recent memory. Leylah is now No. 36 in the live rankings.

Svitolina has made some adjustments in this second set. Will be interesting to see what happens if this goes to a decider. However this shakes out, I admire the guts of these young women. They’re not getting flustered out there. They’re just going about their business. Very professional.

I lean the latter too, like Susan Flannery. Because what usually happens is the actor becomes too ill or frail to appear for months and months, if not more, and passes away suddenly. Their character is no longer a factor by that point. I’d prefer to get my flowers while I’m here to enjoy them and get a nice, dramatic planned send-off and retirement party. I get that for a lot of older actors, it’s about continuing to get benefits, staying active, having a support group, keeping habits built over decades, loving the craft, etc., and you never know when you’re gonna suddenly decline and not be fit to work. Plus it might make the performer aware of their mortality in an uncomfortable way. Up to the individual.

Botic being the first player to take a set off Medvedev this USO is hilarious! Tennis is comedy. Botic vdZ is basically offering a more consistent elite player a roadmap of beating Meddy here.

I fear the nastiness that would come Emma or Leylah’s way if they won a Slam so young in this day and age, but they seem likable, confident, and well-adjusted (for now). It would be a great story if either won. I don’t expect it, but it would be cool.

Yeah, no way I’m staying up that late on a school night. I heard Sakkari was spectacular. Hopefully she brings it against Pliskova. I’m pretty cool with anyone left except Pliskova or Bencic holding a winner’s trophy on Saturday.

Billboard Charts
Annnnnd “Butter” is back at No. 1, a tenth week in total, on the back of a Megan Thee Stallion remix. A couple of Kanye’s Donda tracks made the top 10. Drake’s new album will probably blow the chart out next week.

These ladies’ matches are on too late, oy. Andreescu and Sakkari look like they might be in it for the long haul tonight.

U.S. men’s tennis has been so dire for the past 10-15 years, so we seem to get these articles every once in a while. They pinpoint the right players (Nakashima, Brooksby, Korda), I guess. At least those guys mostly break the mold of servebot-forehand-type of American ATP player we’ve seen get attention in recent years. The drunk crowd is acting a whole-ass fool tonight on Ashe. First time in the Open era that there are no American men or women in the quarterfinals at a Slam or just at the USO?

I’m certainly not going to (or trying to) convince anyone to feel differently on Novak. He’s no victim. But I’ve seen Roger throw tantrums frequently throughout his career to crickets from pundits. I wish the chattering classes would be more honest.- The Tennis Thread
I don’t recall that at the Olympics. You mean his comments about the heat? Novak is faaaaar from perfect, but I don’t think he deserves the ire for doing things tons of players do all the time (like smashing his racquet). It’s also very lucrative to pitch him as the devil in contrast to the stainless, “classy” Federer, the cash cow of the sport.- The Tennis Thread
He didn’t make any comments about Simone. The peanut gallery on Twitter twisted his statements. He was talking only about he deals with pressure, particularly this year as he was in pursuit of a Golden Slam.- The Tennis Thread
This is some A-grade pushing from Brooksby. He does not miss.- The Tennis Thread
Novak can often start slow, but he better pull it together.- The Tennis Thread
