Surviving Debut Episodes
Retro TV re-aired the first episode of The Doctors a few years back, but has never aired it since, though it was apparently available for streaming at some point. Some screen captures exist here. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5597472/?ref_=ttep_ep_1

DAYS: Actor confirms exit
She did yeah. Her first stint in 2008 was 6 months or something. When they moved her out of Steve and Kayla's orbit and into the RoboJohn story she became interesting. Ava became friends with Nicole, but Tamara didn't resign. It was a shame she left the first time, but all her returns since that original stint fell flat for me. The character really floundered under Ron. Her romance with Rafe was horrible and unnecessary IMO. Her relationship with her kids could of worked if they tapped more into her instability, but much like her, her children were kind of unnecessary as well (Tripp is such an awful character). I feel like the show only brought her back so much because she once was popular on another soap and maybe cause of her emmy win. Hope we never see Ava again, but good luck to Tamara! She is very talented.

Texas! Discussion Thread
Got my book, I must say Jeff Ryder and Patrick Mulcahey are very candid in this. Patrick especially holds nothing back in his dislike of Paul Rauch lol and it’s so nice that Tom got to interview Joyce Corrington, her perspective in the early creation is very nice to read, especially about how NBC and Fred Silverman were against their post civil war idea and went all in on it being a daytime version of Dallas. I am also glad the overall consensus amongst everyone was how stupid it was to tame Iris, in no universe does Iris Cory work as a heroine. It’s also interesting to read how the original idea was to move Russ and Pat Matthews to Houston, which honestly may have worked better. Long term they probably would have fit in more with that canvas and it wouldn’t have led to total 180 change with the characters.

Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
Wow! The episode were Sunny is raped is so intense. I've never seen it before, as with most pre and post AOL Classic Soap Search. Marcia McCabe gives an amazing performance! You can really feel Sunny's pain. Emmy worthy for sure. Seeing these really makes me angry that Hogan and Sunny were dumped by the writers to come, they really should have been end game.

DAYS: The Conception | promo (March 7, 2025)
And if some of this material was tweaked or rewritten by the incoming head writers. I can't imagine RC treating any story to do with rape with the sensitivity and realism it should have. I totally agree. Also, I hope Belle is called out for having any sexual relationship with him to. I've always hoped that if this story was told that it would be as realistic as possible, and that it would cause the Dimera's to tear apart, Johnny and EJ's relationship especially. In real life these things break families forever. It would be totally normal and expected that Johnny would never look at his father the same again, that this would forever alter their relationship. Realistically, it probably won't happen that way. I mean Kristen is currently written as a viable love interest for the brother of the man she raped. And I'll be totally shocked if Sami's past transgressions with Austin are addressed properly during this.

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
Unfortunately, I have a feeling they don't have the streaming rights for the show, so their free live feed will probably be turned off until they're airing a show they do have the rights to stream. I think it goes off and on all day for this reason. I hope I am wrong, because unless you have cable at this point, you wont be able to watch in Canada.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
You know I totally get the message. Days content is copyright protected, the show is produced to make money, it’s fair for them to be angry BUT, neither Corday or Sony(who own the rights to distribute the show) make any effort at all for fans to watch classic content. I know about music copyrights and actors residuals, but you have 15,000 episodes to pull from. Early episodes are not as restrictive to share as the 80s and 90s content. Share things on social media, perhaps Peacock can post classic content or select episodes. These things help keep fans engaged, especially now while they burn through the utter garbage that they allowed to be produced under the banner of Days of our Lives. Honestly, fan engagement is the main reason these clips are shared. No one is making money off posting clips on social media. Fans just want to chat with others and share moments they enjoyed from times when the show was in a better place. It’s just so frustrating and annoying, especially while we wait for hopefully brighter days ahead. They need to put more effort in what they’re currently selling and leave fans alone.

Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
Good News. They could honestly cut another half hour while their at it. The show has become to much. Why does a show that is suppose to be set in small backstreet need 6 half hour episodes a week and 65 regular characters? It's insane how greedy ITV has been, and it will probably be that greed that ends the show.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Yeah, if it was true you think they would have started further back during the Classic Soap Channel years. I really wish whatever happened a few years back between P&G and Retro TV regarding EDGE would have ended up with them able to gain the rights to air what episodes are available. I think of all the P&G properties, Edge would work the best in syndication, mystery and crime would have a wider appeal I feel.

James Lipton Chapter 8 Interviews with Soap Actors
I remember watching his Archive of American television interview that you quoted above specifically to hear about his time on soaps and was quite annoyed how dismissive he was about them. Soaps were part of his career for over 30 years. He worked with Irna Phillips, wrote for 7 different soaps and starred on Guiding Light for many years. In his defence, it did seem like he had a very limited time for that interview, but why give it at all if you can't deep dive into your career properly. He really wanted to focus on the TV specials he wrote and of course the actors studio. Interesting note, the acting school which he was dean of at Pace University recently announced it would be closing down due to low enrolment. Guess they aren't able to compete with other institutions. And yes I agree, it is offensive for him to put himself in the same league as Irna, Agnes and Bill. His soap writing was subpar at best.

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
I assume that’s what will happen. That’s what happened when Passions launched. CTV aired Another World, it picked up Passions when AW ended in June. Aired Passions for a season and half, its ratings were dismal compared to AW which had a HUGE following in Canada, it switched to Global and stayed there till it was cancelled.

ALL: What are your lost soap media "holy grails" for 2025?
It would definitely be interesting to know what dates are lost. I feel like we’ve seen a few flashbacks on the show from that era over the years. I would assume September 1966-September 1967, as September is the official start of a television season. Or is it all of 1966 or 1967? I feel like they’ve used flashbacks from 1966 before and if I am not mistaken they’ve also shown a clip from Mickey and Laura’s wedding at the end of 1967. @JAS0N47 would you have an info on this?

AI: Will it be used to recreate soaps?
I've been thinking about this lately, with all the advancements in AI and with all the advancements that are sure to come in the future, will we perhaps see recreations of older soaps from existing scripts? So many scripts are archived throughout America. Irna Philips, The Bells, Agnes Nixon, and a few others were kind enough to donate collections of their work which covers a great deal of work from the 50s through the 70s. Will fans take advantage of this to recreate things when the technology is available?

ALL: What are your lost soap media "holy grails" for 2025?
More of lost episodes of The Doctors (1980-1982) and the early years that apparently were in the archives (63-67). More Days episodes from the 65-82 period of the show. Anything from 66-69 for sure. I’d love to see more from the Salam Strangler, other than the edits that have been out there for years. I’d love to see Mary’s death. I know those episodes were on WOST many years ago. I think that was one of Days first BIG location shoots. Anything Pre 1978 for General Hospital. I am really fascinated by the 1975-1977 period of the show. The 1977 edits on YouTube were a great watch. Anything from Bright Promise, Return to Peyton Place, How to Survive a Marriage and Somerset. Pre 1979 Edge of Night. The early Slesar years sound so amazing. 1968-1972 would be incredible finds. Early Another World. 1970s especially. Iris/Mac/Rachel, Steve and Alice, Crazy Olive.

2024: The Directors and Writers Thread
Question @JAS0N47, not sure if you can answer it. There was just 10 credited writers on Fridays episode, has that happened in the last few decades? I feel like since the mid-nineties there has always been 12 or more writers on the team.

Yeah, was that for profit though? Wasn’t it just promotional? Ryan’s aired on soap net. SFT and Edge aired on the USA network. Texas reaired briefly to, on TBS paired with The Caitlin’s.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
Yeah, they had mentioned they had a broken amount of episodes from the 63-67 period. They aired the first episode and another random episode from the shows first month. You think they would have put everything up. Even if episodes are missing. Soap fans of that period are use to not having complete runs. In regards to my point about the 80-82 episodes, I also wonder if it’s a residual issue that could be keeping them from wanting to air those episodes. I believe it was around that time when writers and actors worked larger residuals into their contracts. Ryan’s Hope/SFT/Edge are the only soaps that have reaired regular episodes from that period before.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
I was wondering the other day if somewhere out in the world the 1980-1982 run existed. There have been around a dozen or so episodes that popped up over the years online from that era including the final episode of the series. I know apparently NBC didn't save those tapes, which really confuses me, because I believe the show did air in some international markets at some point. VCR's were also more available at this point, maybe more fans have episodes in their personal collections. I just find it hard to believe all those episodes are gone, when soap producers/networks were saving episodes for all soaps by this point, no matter how popular or unpopular they were. Could it be possible they didn't approach NBC at all?

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
It's so crazy looking back at how chaotic that time was. 18 characters pretty much disappearing, most never to be seen or heard of again. Recasting David, Mary and Mike. 9 new arrivals, majority of them written out before their first year was up. It's horrifying to think Fred Silverman planned to expand Days to 90 minutes after AW. I can't even imagine the damage that would of done. Days wouldn't of recovered, and probably would of been cancelled before AW. Even through all that mess Days was the top rated show on NBCD, overtaking self-destructing AW during this period. Thank god Days had Deidre Hall and the Hayes. They really carried that show and gave the audience something familiar to tune into. Something that can be said about the current state of the show too. Maybe its time for another Valentine's Day massacre???

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
I don’t think NBC ever would on broadcast television. Their affiliates are so fickle and that news show that replaced Days does well enough and costs nothing to make. Maybe on Peacock, if they could produce it as cheap as they do Days. ABC possibly would, or perhaps they would revive one of their cancelled shows. I really believe the soap opera formate of 5 shows a week could be so beneficial to these streamers. It’s obviously helping Peacock having Days in terms of consistent viewers. Having new and interesting content everyday on platforms that often can go weeks without putting out something that hits with viewers could only help make these companies money. Imagine if Netflix produced a few less episodes of their big name shows, put that money into producing a 5 day a week soap with the same talent they have in there other productions. I think audience reaction would be very surprising for them.

ALL: Bad Moves by Well Regarded Soap Writers/EPs
Bill Bell once said he felt his killing Dickie Martin on Days wasn't a very good story decision, mostly because of audience reaction. He wrote Susan giving birth to Dickie prematurely, spending weeks in the hospital as they both fought for their lives. Letters poured in from viewers wanting the baby to survive he said. He wrote Susan deciding she was going to raise her son after they got better, she bonded with him, then he died in a freak accident a few months later. While this led to the legendary story of Susan killing David Martin and her feud with Julie, which carried years of story, I can see his point. It must have been traumatising for viewers to feel relief that Dickie survived his birth only to die a few months later.

DAYS: Head Writer Ron Carlivati Departing Peacock Soap After Seven Years
I totally agree, they most likely wrote the strike. Corday has a history of hiring fi-core writers after writers strikes are done as well (re: Higley 08). Honestly I was watching more frequently during the strike, it was more the type of show I want to see overall with more focus on family and character. It wasn't the most exciting stories, but I think some of that had to do with the BTS going on with the firing of the EP and scripts being written so far in advance. I am really curious to see how the overall writing team looks. I was sad Chris Dunn left for BTG, as I feel his long history writing soaps and Days would have benefited the new team. I also feel like any Carlivati additions will probably be gone, I suspect Sonia Alarr will be disappearing anytime now. Jamey Giddens still seems to be there, Ryan Quan is probably there to. With the pool of former daytime writers a lot smaller then it was a decade ago, hopefully they will bring in some new blood. Freshness is needed at this point.
