  1. Never Say Never: The Deidre Hall Story (a title that just gets funnier with repetition) was the ABC Sunday Night Movie on Dec. 10, 1995. It lost to both Journey (airing as the Hallmark Hall of Fame on CBS) and Eddie Murphy's The Distinguished Gentleman, airing on NBC. As an adult, I now realize who Connie Ray's "Shane" was supposed to be. Speaking of Shane (Donovan), it seems like DAYS was working out a lot of kinks from 1990-95. @carolineg mentioned this, but it bears repeating: the actors from the '80s supercouples kept leaving (and if you want to extend it, Matthew Ashford in '93 and Melissa Reeves in '95 -- yes, I know there were extenuating circumstances), plus you had actors hired that didn't work out (I think it was mentioned on this thread that Lynn Herring was supposed to be paired with Shane before Lisanne ended up entrenched in the Lawrence/Carly/Bo/Alamains stuff), actors returning that didn't work out (Wayne, but also Susan Seaforth Hayes, who admitted to not wanting to do other love stories, which made it harder for Julie to be viable) and a significant recast that ultimately didn't go the distance (Robert Kelker-Kelly as Bo). Never Say Never: The Deidre Hall Story (you have to say the full title for full effect) is on YouTube, BTW. If I didn't already have lots of other things to watch, it could be a fun SON live-watch experience.
  2. That's another factor I hadn't considered ... Sami would have stayed in Salem?
  3. That may explain some of the rationale for bringing back Hope/Kristian Alfonso in 1994, if they assumed they were going to lose not one, but three heroines. In the proposed soaps thread, there was mention of Marlena gaining a brassy actress friend by the name of P.T. Barnum and getting involved with a dysfunctional, Trumpesque (in those days when his public image was flamboyant and "charming") father and son pair. Terry Lester would have just been free from ATWT .... Not sure who could have played the son or P.T.
  4. I remember reading in some book (I want to say it was "Soaps, A Pictorial History") that as early as circa '83, Dee's contract allowed for guaranteed prime time appearances (or at least payoffs if it didn't happen). Can't say I blame Dee for wanting to try her luck ... I mean, look at what was going on with Susan Lucci in particular. This also reminds me that we never did find out if any names were seriously bandied about for MANHATTAN LIVES, the Marlena in NYC spinoff.
  5. Dee might not have had a series anymore (Our House was cancelled in '88), but she did make some memorable guest appearances, like as Tim Curry's wife on Wiseguy, or Ian Buchanan's professional and personal victim on Columbo. @JAS0N47 with the receipts!
  6. Yup, @carolineg, the '84 island story included original recipe Roman's death. And if I'm not mistaken, that island was reused for the 1988 storyline involving Stefano's return and the tease over whether or not Marlena was alive. Did the 1997 jungle story take place in a landlocked country or was it on yet another island?
  7. L.A., September 1974: Nothing unusual with KNXT (CBS) and KNBC's lineups. KABC and KEYT (Santa Barbara), however, deviated significantly. 11:00 The Girl in My Life (where Password would be) 11:30 $10,000 Pyramid (where Split Second would be) 12:00 Password (where AMC would be) 12:30 Split Second (where Let's Make a Deal would be) 1:00 All My Children (where Newlywed Game would be) 1:30 Let's Make a Deal (where Girl in My Life would be) 2:00 Newlywed Game (where GH would be) 2:30 One Life to Live (in its right slot) 3:00 General Hospital (where Pyramid would be)
  8. @Titus Andronicus's link reminds me ... someone at DAYS must have had a fetish for islands. We had everyone stranded following the plane crash right after the Princess Gina storyline, then Tropical Temptation the year after, and of course, Melaswen.
  9. I love that ad, even if (to the casual viewer) it makes Marlena sound vengeful, maybe a little like Alexis Colby.
  10. Okay, found the date (but not yet the clip) for Philip's performance. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001. Two days later, Chloe and Brady sang from The Sound of Music. Oh, and if this wasn't enough earnest singing, the teen characters apparently also sang "Michael Row the Boat Ashore." Lest we forget, they were all in Puerto Rico ostensibly for a class trip on ecosystems.
  11. Agreed. I kinda wish Isabella would have just kept counseling the entire Black/Brady family. Can you imagine the interactions with Sami? Revisiting "Tropical Temptation" ... at the time, I really liked how in addition to Shawn/Belle/Philip/Chloe/Mimi/Jan, there were also side characters like Jason (the class d-bag), Susan (a bigger girl), Kevin (the first sexy nerd I'd ever seen on TV?) and Mr. Woods (who had a hip lecture -- but still a lecture -- about seemingly everything). In hindsight, yeah, they were definitely going for a TNBC thing embedded in their soap opera. Not sure how I'd feel about revisiting it.
  12. While trying to pinpoint a date for Philip's musical number, I also looked up Isabella's appearances. Looks like I blended two together: her ghost counseled Eric in 2000 and Brady in 2002. For Brady, it wasn't about he and Marlena, it was about his grief over losing Isabella and fearing losing Chloe, who had leukemia.
  13. This was the weekend cliffhanger for Friday, Nov. 3-Monday, Nov. 6, 2000 (thanks, as usual, to @JAS0N47's site). I remember seeing it live, so I either was sick or we had a couple days off from school. Brady's pointless hate for Marlena was not at all popular. I was convinced the Gay Zorro cape would be ripped open during the fight. Zenon: The Zequel premiered in January 2001, so it's quite possible that that's where Kirsten was while these episodes were being shot/Belle was in the hospital. One more anecdote from school: we were getting ready to watch a video in class and the TV was turned to NBC. Belle appeared on screen and one boy went, "Zenon?"
  14. I remember it as "I Need You" (by Leann Rimes). I want to say Philip sang and played it (by himself?) while on the "Tropical Temptation" island, so that would be in the summer of '01. Maybe I'll be able to find that clip ...
  15. It was the era I first got into DAYS, so I have rose-colored glasses on the whole, but even I can admit it wasn't great. Found the rampage (it's unlisted):
  16. Zorro the Gay Blade's rampage at Tuscany was just as absurd in real time as it is as folklore. You're right, @DRW50, they ended up having Isabella's ghost help Brady get over his angst. Soap Opera Weekly had some fun with Kyle and Nadja's singing scenes: "Tune in for Rolf's rendition of 'Edelweiss,' followed by Alice Horton's inspiring 'Climb Every Mountain.'"
  17. Oklahoma City, November 1980 KTVY 4 (NBC) 9:00am - The John Davidson Show 10:00am - Hour Magazine 11:00am - Card Sharks 11:30am - Dannysday 12:00am - Action 4 at Noon 12:30pm - Days of Our Lives 1:30pm - Another World 2:30pm - Texas 3:30pm - Tom and Jerry KOCO-TV 5 (ABC) 9:00am - Donahue 10:00am - The Love Boat 11:00am - All My Children (day-behind from 12:00pm) 12:00pm - 5 Alive NewsCenter at Noon 12:30pm - Ryan's Hope (one-hour delay) 1:00pm - One Life to Live 2:00pm - General Hospital 3:00pm - The Edge of Night 3:30pm - Happy Days Again KWTV 9 (CBS) 9:00am - The Jeffersons 9:30am - Alice 10:00am - The Price is Right 11:00am - The Young and the Restless 12:00pm - Midday 1:00pm - As The World Turns 2:00pm - Guiding Light 3:00pm - I Love Lucy 3:30pm - The Toni Tennille Show So at some point between July 1979 and November 1980, KTVY dropped THE DOCTORS, but then brought it back sometime before June 1982. Also, KWTV's midday news, which aired at 11:30 a.m. in July 1979 (instead of SEARCH) evidently got moved up a half-hour when Y&R expanded. It appears to have stayed an hour until CAPITOL debuted. I guess this partially explains why KTVY didn't pick up SEARCH -- why bother bringing back a show that hadn't aired in your market for years?
  18. Nashville, plus northern Mississippi and Alabama, September 1977: WOWL, the NBC station in Florence, Alabama, also aired ATWT and GL. The two CBS soaps came after the network lineup, resulting in a unique afternoon: DOOL at 12:30, DOCTORS at 1:30, AW at 2, The Gong Show at 3, ATWT at 3:30 and GL at 4:30. I wonder how long this arrangement lasted, especially since all the CBS stations listed aired all the soaps. WHMA, the CBS station in Anniston, aired The PTL Club at the lead-in to LOL, with TPIR airing at 4:30 after Tattletales.
  19. Clearly they were hoping Felicia would stop by and get inspired while on the dance floor.
  20. Update: LOVING still wasn't airing in the Quad Cities as of December 1991.
  21. September 1978, Nebraska-South Dakota-Iowa: SEARCH FOR TOMORROW aired at 3:30 p.m. (after Match Game '78) on KELO in Sioux Falls, since the station had an hour newscast from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ALL MY CHILDREN aired on a one-day delay at 9 a.m. on KCAU in Sioux City and KHGI in Kearney. The stations ran news and The Cross-Wits at 12. The soaps all aired in pattern on the NBC stations. I'm a little surprised nobody dropped For Richer, For Poorer, but I guess the attitude was to just let it play out its run. Of note: three of the five stations aired Donahue rather than the 9-10 a.m. hour of the network midday lineup, Card Sharks and Hollywood Squares (eventually Jeopardy!). KMTV in Omaha also appears to have passed on the network Wheel of Fortune to run the syndicated Gong Show at 10:30.
  22. Yakima, Washington, June 1978 KIMA, the CBS station, aired the syndicated soap HIGH HOPES instead of afternoon news, slotting it between SEARCH and ATWT (and against the dying FOR RICHER, FOR POORER and the start of AMC). Non-soap-related: KNDO (NBC) aired The Mickey Mouse Club instead of Card Sharks. Boston/Providence/Hartford, November 1981 THE DOCTORS did not air on WBZ in Boston (which aired People Are Talking), but did air on WJAR in Providence and WVIT in New Britain. No EDGE in Boston (it had been dropped from ABC affiliate WCVB in 1976 and independent station WLVI in September 1978; WCVB had reruns of The Waltons after GH; WLVI had afternoon cartoons), New Haven (WTNH carried EDGE from August 1976-September 1979 and aired Merv Griffin in the afternoon) or Providence (WPRI dropped Edge by October 1979 and also aired Merv). GUIDING LIGHT aired at 9 a.m. on WLNE in New Bedford (which aired an afternoon movie after SEARCH). San Francisco and Sacramento, April 1982 (a prelude to the 1983 schedules earlier on this page) KCRA (Sacramento) was airing DAYS at 3 as early as April '82, with TEXAS as its lead-in. No DOCTORS, SEARCH or AW. On KRON (San Francisco), THE DOCTORS aired at 11. No SEARCH (Midday instead) or TEXAS (Ironside reruns, followed by Merv Griffin; by '83, Merv moved up an hour). The CBS and ABC affiliates' schedules are more or less the same/in pattern. Chicago, June 1983 WMAQ aired news at noon, meaning DAYS and AW aired a half-hour out of pattern (and AW directly competed with CAPITOL, plus the end of OLTL). WBBM aired Donahue at 9, with Pyramid, Child's Play and Tattletales airing in a block before Y&R at 11:30 and The Price Is Right airing after the soaps at 3 p.m. WLS aired EDGE at 9:30 a.m., after A.M Chicago. EDGE was not airing on WTEN in Albany, New York, as of July 1984. The 10:30 a.m. slot, which it was at in August 1980 (according to the Edge Homepage), was filled by Mary Tyler Moore reruns.
  23. They not only chem tested her with Ned, they chem tested her with Ashton! And Colton, at least in the immediate aftermath of his triangle with Frisco & Felicia. I can see it now ... a ripped from the headlines story where Terry returns, seeking legal action against Bobbie for a conservatorship she was placed under during the Purity Water/O'Connor brothers mess.
  24. She was. Plus it was Vinton's nickname for Naomi on Mama's Family. Going back to Bobbie and the '80s brownstone crew, I'm wondering how long Robin Bernard's contract was for. Terry Brock had four years on the front burners (1984-87), then spent 1988 into early 1990 mostly just singing. I guess they figured they better get as much use out of the Duke's Place set as they can.
