Characters that ATE their Soaps
And VM only quit at the time because they wouldn't give her some time off or a lighter schedule for her then-very-small child. I don't know how she survived that schedule tbh.

I also like RSW. Always have, even back on AMC. He is no thespian but he has a certain intensity which works for him. I blame RC.

ARTICLE: Nominations Announced for ‘The 49th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards’
I think she's always been way ahead of the show tbh. She's a better actress than the genre these days IMO. I'd still try to secure her for Serena on GH though.

Ellen Wheeler was incompetent and unstable, and not fit to run GL. No amount of years she spent winning hearts playing Marley on television will change that. I liked her as an actress. As an EP, she turned GL into something just above snuff film. And that's before I even get started on her, uh, mentor, who went from being hailed for giving AW a graceful exit and revitalizing ATWT to running it into the ground for years, to say nothing of whatever the hell he did to Martha Byrne which she still doesn't openly speak about.

I think some part of Kim was more comfortable in the stripped down stuff tbh. In her memoir she freely admits she 'let myself go' physically and stopped caring about how she looked due to depression over the state of the show at the time, and I think she may have said she was also been undergoing menopause somewhere in that decade but I can't recall the timeline. But I think stripped of so much of the tacky Rauch, etc. artifice on an aimless and often plotless show, her real grit and character came out again onscreen. And I don't think she was super bitter to be shed of the ridiculous fantasy/royal palace storylines, if nothing else.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
The lighting is rough and I have zero interest in Crystal Chappell's vanity webseries, but I'm not gonna hate on Zimmer or RN. I think he looks good, and Kim is letting herself age naturally and not chasing the sexpot stuff they put her through in the late '90s and early 2000s which didn't suit her at all and which even then she frankly did not have the looks for. IMO her performances leveled up considerably from the Rauch era in the last, sad years of GL while the rest of the show went to hell, and a big part of that was because she (by her own admission) stopped caring about how she looked and the scripts were a mess, so she just went off raw talent. She never reminded me more of a British soap matriarch than she did in those days. She still does.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
Oh, I like Robin fine. I think she is good as Skye and should've returned to AMC long ago, which is her best possible place. I do think she has a specific range and should not be the frontburner be-all end-all of a show though, and when she is the cracks show and she starts camping it up even more than usual. Her role on GH is intolerable and pointless when she's on contract, but good when she comes in and out for stints to make trouble for people to renew RC's health insurance, which she hasn't done in about a decade now but I wish she would pay another visit, bring her daughter and make more trouble. Most of the new women on the show make Skye look like Laura Spencer. That's as far as I take it.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
The Rae story was worse than that. She was on every soap and literally had no concept of either the age or sex of her child. She went from every ABC soap wondering if her child was everyone from twentysomethings Eve and Sophia on PC and OLTL, to fortysomething Max Holden. It was completely ridiculous.

I vocally resented Skye's presence on GH at MBTV/TWOP for many, many years lol

ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
Barbara Crampton (Y&R, GL) will be appearing on the livestreaming aftershow for the public broadcast of the third episode of the new season of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on their new Gizmoplex platform, on May 7th. She starred with DOOL's Lisa Rinna in "Robot Wars," which is the film being riffed on in the episode. "Robot Wars" was mentioned in this thread before when the episode first debuted for Kickstarter backers, but the public event is coming up and Crampton will be appearing with the show's stars during the stream.

The Media/Journalism Thread
If that were true, Marco Rubio would be in office. The American media is an important and dangerous wurlitzer when used for the wrong things, and it often has the wrong priorities these days. But it's not all powerful and we need to stop insisting that every time it jumps on a bad frame that this frame is going to be automatically successful with the public 90 seconds after it appears. Because many of those frames and bad media takes simply don't take off. That doesn't mean we stop calling them out or combating it, it simply means not assuming they are baked in with the public, will sway millions and win the day for them beforehand while also doing the work to make sure to push back.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
More like that's all they cared to give her. JFP had very little control after Guza returned, AFAIK. That's why Skye was left to various B-C characters after Luke (and after Alcazar was downgraded to placate Maurice).

Characters that ATE their Soaps
I would. And it was a disaster and is a big part of what got Megan fired, Jill deposed and Guza brought back. They deserved it! Yes, Jax had story, technically, but it was all third-tier shít with characters Guza didn't care about. It was 1-2 day a week stuff. Once Brenda left that was his role until Laura Wright, and even when Brenda was back he was played as the do-gooder third wheel in her life vs. Sonny and Jason. Yes, Brenda still loved him but the focus was not on him in that material at all IMO. There was also that lull between stories where they just said 'oh, he's seeing hookers.' What? They wouldn't do that to a leading man they cared about (other than Luke, which was a different story). It was like Billy Warlock's A.J.'s years on the show - he had romances, but would anyone say they cared about him? Much of 2000s Jax was just demeaned and an afterthought, with the recurring exception of his time with Carly. I think Luke/Skye happened because they were struggling to find something to do with Luke at the time to ground him, and Jill eagerly stepped into the vacuum with one of her favorite FOJs of all time: Robin Christopher. In this instance her favoritism served their needs. But once they hit on pairing him with Jane Elliot that went out the window, as it should have.

Jerry VerDorn has passed away
Maureen Garrett's also been added to the Soaphub article. That last comment Aleksander mentions JVD making shortly before he passed - "thanks to YouTube we're all immortal" - is one of the blessings we have these days. YT has really kept soaps and their legacy alive.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
I've been over Chloe before, but I'll just say again that I really liked Chloe, even in the forced pairing with Jax, and hated her death. She even worked in that weird pairing with Stefan. The Jax/Kristina/Angel stuff under JFP/Megan made absolutely no sense. He was shoehorned back into the show (with an embarrassing low-budget Mission: Impossible-esque entrance) and it was obvious they had no real plan for the character immediately. They would test him with Kristina and Angel and both were horribly embarrassing. Then Guza was stuck with him, and that lasted for many years until they finally paired him with Laura's Carly. I still liked Jax until Ingo went full Trump, but there's no denying he had no purpose for many years until becoming Carly's man. Don't get me started on Luke and Skye. Ugh.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
All I can say is I remember being one of the only people who liked her online in 2001-2002. It was a hard road and I wasn't shocked when Guza killed her off. I don't remember anyone liking her with Ned. I don't know why Jill did that. She was definitely more liked than any of them, but yeah, all the Jill/Megan female additions were roundly lumped together and that unfortunately included Kristina. Only Courtney and Skye were spared and tbh Skye shouldn't have been because the way Skye arrogantly kept pushing herself into the Qs and calling Edward "Grandfather" within 3 minutes was very, very annoying. I like Robin Christopher but I don't think Skye on contract (or as a Q) ever worked. Her place on the show only worked when she came in and out much later on to fùck with people, which she should still be doing.

Were they? I sure don't remember it, lol. I remember them loving Alexis' big speech to Sonny about him in the aftermath though.

Characters that ATE their Soaps
Kristina was sadly pretty unpopular, and she was smoked less than a year later IIRC. I liked Jaime Ray Newman in the role a lot, but they gave her the kiss of death pairing with Alexis' ex Ned, who she was also far too young for - she should've been with Lucky.

The Media/Journalism Thread
The public doesn't care about the leak, though. They care about abortion (one way or another).

Characters that ATE their Soaps
Courtney started with JFP and McTavish (after a lot of other aborted plans to do a sister story for Sonny under other writers), named like so many other characters she created, for Jill's daughter. But Frons and I believe Pratt fell in love with her for Jason. Guza couldn't be bothered and once he had the chance to dump her - with the arrival of Kelly Monaco, who became the new female lead priority for Frons besides Braun's Carly - he sidelined her with Jax and Nikolas in C-story and then killed her off. I think Pratt also took off around the same time, or close to it. JFP remained the official EP on paper until 2011 or so IIRC, but I believe Guza came back with creative control superceding hers in 2002, and got a producer credit of his own when he returned. He had learned from his fights with Wendy Riche, and Jill was reduced to his line producer and facilitator due to her disastrous one-year creative reign with Megan. I couldn't think of a better fate for her, personally, after what she did to so many shows. It is not a coincidence that the one time Guza was out of the building in the 2000s, during the WGA strike in '08, Jill instantly launched frontburner story for all of her old FOJs like Rick Hearst, as though she was back at GL in 1994.

There are definitely some people I know elsewhere with convenient amnesia about Turner. I laid it on pretty thick when she got stomped.
