  1. saynotoursoap, I couldn't agree with you more about how spoilers have helped ruin the genre. There's really something to be said about the element of surprise. Watching yesterday, my heart broke watching Nick silently say a prayer before breaking down in tears. All the acting has been fantastic, with Gerald Gordon, Zaida Coles and Carolee Campbell leading the way.
  2. I really find the lack of spoilers refreshing, especially regarding yesterday's second episode. I was floored. Can't wait to see what happens.
  3. Yes, the Duvall trial was great - and I think that was the story where everything finally came together for SB after a year on the air.
  4. Yes, I remember that RSW said some kind things about Jacquie in the SOD cover story on her passing. I've never seen Ellen Holly's work but it seemed she had an ax to grind with everyone. What a shame.
  5. Thanks for sharing those - he definitely has a terrific voice.
  6. Sharon Gabet confirmed on FB that the actress in that commercial is indeed Terry Davis.
  7. I wrote a fan letter to Jami Fields (Penny Davis, The Doctors), and besides autographing the pictures I sent, she also wrote me a letter and said what she has been up to these days. After retiring from acting, she worked as a production assistant on both GL and ATWT in the early 80s. Alas, she left ATWT only a year before Liz Hubbard joined the show, so their paths never crossed. From there, "I've been in marketing for the magazine industry for over 25 years now and still do that work. My favorite hobby is pottery, and I have two studios that I work out of here in NYC, making the usual mugs, bowls, tea pots, plates, and such."
  8. It looks like her, but I can't tell for sure.
  9. I read that he and Phil Carey often played pranks on her at OLTL (getting their hands wet and shaking hers, causing lines she had written on her hands to be washed away). Maybe she and RSW just didn't connect, especially since he seemed to get along fine with most of his other leading ladies. I wonder if Jacquie remained in touch with Virginia Dwyer after both had left AW, since they seemed to be very close. I've exchanged a couple of emails in the past with Jennifer Desiderio, the daughter of Jacquie and Carl. Jennifer says the only time she met George Reinholt as an adult was at that "50 Years of Soaps" special where "Alice" and "Steve" were reunited on stage. It was the first time they had seen each other since she was a little kid.
  10. Hi Paul Raven - I have tried reaching out to them, as well as a couple of other surviving cast members from this period. If I hear anything, I will let you all know. Since I don't have Photobucket, I have a couple of friends here who might be willing to post the pictures of the pictures that I took (which will have to do until I can get a scanner). I'm pretty sure that this DS-inspired plot with Liz and Townsend was a network mandate. Later on in 1969 both Lakin and Edelstein left the show, so it's possible that their collective hearts weren't in this story, especially if it was one they were forced to write. There are so many other good stories going on at this time - the Powers and Bellini marriages, the implosion of the Aldrich marriage of "logic" coupled with Steve and Carolee's growing bond, Anna Ford's recovery and Mike Powers' struggles to be his own man and out of his father's shadow - that this dog of a story just sticks out like a sore thumb.
  11. It was a thrill. What I like about this writing team is that other than her somewhat abnormal attachment to her stepfather, Penny is pretty much a normal preteen. She sasses her mother, frets about her homework, and loves writing in her diary and listening to music. The show was lucky to have such a talented young actress like Ms. Fields to keep Penny likable. I wish Retro TV would get her and others like Liz Hubbard, Carolee Campbell, Terry Kiser, Laryssa Lauret, Pam Toll, C.C. Courtney, etc., to do promos like MeTV does for the vintage shows they air. That would be awesome.
  12. Was the show a mid-season replacement or did it get a full episode order its first season?
  13. Did Peter Simon ever come back to SFT short-term, like his wife did?
  14. From everything I've read and heard about her, she seemed just as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside.
  15. I had a through the mail autograph success today with Jami Fields (Penny Davis) - as someone else upthread so eloquently called her, the Sally Draper of the show. Not only did she autograph the screen caps I had printed out, but she also wrote me a very nice letter. It reads, in part: "I was not aware that the shows were running on Retro TV. Since then, I have a friend in Albuquerque who has found the show and is watching it, as well as someone in North Carolina who is recording episodes for me. It's a lot of fun to see the old shows - especially after so many years. "After I retired from acting, I was working for a time in TV production in NYC. I worked at both "The Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns", for CBS. About a year after I left "World Turns", they hired Elizabeth Hubbard to be on the show. But I was long gone and in another industry, so our paths never crossed. In fact, I never ran into any of the "Doctors" cast again. I do keep up with my friends from CBS, but that's about it for the TV folks. "I'm glad you are such an avid TV fan and I imagine you must have a great photo collection from all the shows you follow. I'm just a fan now myself, and I spend a lot of time on drama as well as a fair amount of reality shows. Professionally, I've been in marketing for the magazine industry for over 25 years now, and still do that work. Outside of that, my favorite hobby is pottery, and I have two studios that I work out of here in NYC, making the usual mugs, bowls, tea pots, plates and such. So, best regards to you and your family. Thanks again for letting me know about "The Doctors". Jami" For the record, two of the screen caps were closeups, and one was a shot of her and Gerald Gordon (Nick) together.
  16. I did read someplace else that KM extended her original contract an additional six months as a favor to Labine/Mayer. In any case, leaving the show with an all-expense paid trip to Ireland (without having to memorize lines at that, all the words were prerecorded voiceovers) sure isn't a bad perk!!!
  17. What a great anniversary article. Love Jacquie's white gown and matching feather boa.
  18. It's a shame SB never really gave Todd McKee/Ted a great story to do. He was young, effervescent, handsome and could actually act. With the possible exception of Hayley, I wasn't crazy about any of Ted's romances but thought he was terrific as the youngest Capwell sibling (though in reality he was actually a couple of years older than Robin Wright).
  19. According to my DVR, the remaining two episodes of UH's second season will air back to back on Wed. 3/25: Richard Roundtree at 8 PM EST and Baby Boy at 9 PM EST.
  20. Do you think Mary might have had a chance if the character had been recast with an actress already established in soaps (like Pamela Toll) as opposed to virtual unknowns (as Carney, Tolan and Goulet all were at the time)? Or was it a lost cause no matter what since KM was so established in the role?
  21. Starting on March 30th, Retro TV will begin airing reruns of Police Surgeon, also known as Dr. Simon Locke (1971-1974). Sam Groom, AW's Dr. Russ Matthews from 1966-1971, played the lead role. Here's more info about it from RTV's website: http://www.myretrotv.com/news/retro-tv-adds-police-surgeon
  22. Those are great - thanks. SantaBarbaraNBC, do you also have Episode 168 (the introduction of Carmen Castillo and Brick officially moving into the Perkins house)? That's another one I've never seen the entire episode.
  23. I wonder if the FLD specials were released to schools and such for educational purposes. Of course, back then they probably were on film reels and shown on projectors...I wonder who would be the person/company to ask if they are still in existence. Anyway, here is a review of the first of the three FLD specials - the one about the Jacksons that won Gerald Gordon an Emmy as the 7th President. TD is also represented by David O'Brien and Armand Assante. There's a photo of GG and Fran Brill in character: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1982&dat=19750412&id=z7pGAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9TMNAAAAIBAJ&pg=3585,2169765 The photo is a bit clearer here: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1734&dat=19750418&id=IeAbAAAAIBAJ&sjid=2lEEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2619,4213227
  24. sungrey - yes, I have heard the original ominous piano theme from the CBS era. "The EDDDDGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGE Of Night!!!"
  25. OK - how do you think things would have worked out in the story had ABC taken the advice of Labine/Mayer and killed off Mary when KM left?
