Here's my dream JD Vance interview question: Your most recent rhetoric focuses on Haitian immigrants who have been granted humanitarian visas based on the natural disasters in their country. They now make up a workforce of 15,000 manufacturing jobs in Springfield. So, under a Trump government could we expect that on day one, your administration would require a local police force (who does not support claims of animal mistreatment) to round up these workers and deport them back to Haiti, effectively closing the Ohio businesses that employ them? How would that affect the economy of Springfield? I mean, maybe it would save some geese, but at what cost to the state's economic growth?

I've forgotten, is there a reason that they continued to refer to him as Scott Lasalle once they learned that was a fake name? Reginald went back to being Reginald Love, so why didn't he become Scott Love?

DAYS: Will classic episodes ever be available?
I find that TikTok is the wild west of classic episodes. For example, there's an Australian woman who posts 1980s clips of Days. Currently, she's doing a theme of Bo and Mrs. Horton's relationship that is very fun to re-watch. I hadn't recalled how many scenes they shared, including one where she tried to shear his hair! It is all very searchable by hashtags. Personally, I prefer clips, because I find full, unedited classic episodes to be a little dull. It's like watching a slow, drawn out joke, when you already know the punchline.

ALL: End of an Era: Are Daytime Soaps Washing Away?
Trust and believe, if daytime dramas were still effective in selling shampoo and dishwashing detergent, then nobody would care about the acting or story quality but us. As evidenced by so much of the melodramatic acting and poor quality scripts from 1960s soaps. But, when consumer product divisions started to scrimp on safety testing, and were deemed no longer as trustworthy, they lost profitability and found that the old ways of marketing were no longer a useful investment. For example, the toxic shock lawsuits of the early 1980s were completely avoidable if P&G hadn't put sales before safety. But once they lost 900 lawsuits and $58.2 million dollars, they could no longer afford to produce soap operas. They also lost $24.2 million due to misleading the public on decongestants, and $45.6 million on deceptive marketing of probiotics. https://www.chicagotribune.com/1989/03/27/after-8-years-procter-still-not-free-of-the-rely-controversy/ Just think about the timing of these losses, and the resulting changes in the daytime landscape. Because OJ and shock talkshows wouldn't have been allowed to flourish if ATWT was still pushing Prell. Take a moment to watch the commercials on daytime now. Nobody wants to invest in a medium that markets to people interested in mesothelioma lawsuits and dental assistant training programs.

I think soap's commentary on class through the lens of a medium built on consumer spending is fascinating. It is an obvious oversimplification of decades of history but, regardless of writer, the rich families were rarely intact and fraught with conflict (i.e., the Loves and the Corys). The poor families usually had someone driven by avarice. As well as a first responder who was invariably the initial victim of an emergency. And then the middle class were filled with professionals like doctors and lawyers, and they were the ones that were the happiest. Homes that bought Prell Shampoo and Rice-a-Roni, had two parents, including a loving mother and a wise father. They were marketed as the source of nostalgia, and when a change in production occurred we were always mollified by the promise of a return of the middle class. So as we discuss AW, I always reflect on what they were selling, and how. Because for me the theme is always accented by the voiceover, “Another World, brought to you by the makers of…” It may be a narrow focus, but the enduring aspects of creating a genre to sell grocery items interests me.

I would argue the problem with Scott, is the same issue with Jamey and Dennis, it is difficult to write a compelling prince-charming, aka a rich good guy. A rich good guy has zero inherent conflict on a soap. They are generally just the center of a triangle for two more compelling female characters. Their main attributes are their wealth and their hair. So, they become interchangeable as new wealthy families pop into town. From AMC's Greg Nelson to GH's Derek Barrington, the soap universe is littered with similar dudes. And Peter Bergman's shift from AMC to Y&R proves that more often than not it is the character, and not the actor, that is the problem.

DAYS: September 2024 Spoilers
I get the need to move the FAbby story forward, and I am glad we'll get to know more about the plan. But, if they don't go back to Xander, Brady, and Fiona on Monday, they're ruining the flow. There has to be a more natural way to balance the stories than just to have everyone on pause for a week.

Bravo's The Real Housewives of....
I wonder how they'll reference the loss of Robin on RHOP? They have to say something about Gizelle loosing her ally. But, they shy away from direct references to the show. I hate when they use they say, “she's not a part of our friend group anymore”, because it is so unnatural. Are Robin and Gizelle still doing their podcast?

While I don't approve of the IRL situation that provoked it, I like the idea of establishing a motivation for why Holly won't have Nicole in her life for major life events. It becomes a defining feature of her character, like her villain origin story. So, when she gets married, or goes on trial, it will make sense why Nicole isn't around; unlike Hope or Sami with their kids. Doesn't everyone bust a move while they're planning their boyfriend's memorial service?

The Media/Journalism Thread
The only thing that MTG and I will ever agree upon is the wish that Laura Loomer had remained banned from Twitter as she is from TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and even Lyft and Doordash due to her disgusting rhetoric. In fact, the only other platform that she has been able to monetize is Rumble, which most of us have opposed when it is linked on this forum. She has hired mobs to trespass at the homes Sen. Pelosi and Gov. Newsom. She has denied the shootings in Parkland and Las Vegas. And even accused Casey DeSantis of faking breast cancer for votes. All in all a disgusting human.

I've been thinking a lot about this today, and I agree. Eating dogs and cats sounds absurd and funny at first. Then, you realize he is taking a page out of the basic racist playbook. In order to enrage his base, he is using xenophobia against Haitian immigrants to distract people into voting against their best interests. I mean, it is easy to see the similarities between this and Willie Horton, or any number of disenfranchised citizens who've been used for political gain. And while we all make jokes, we forget that this is exactly what worked in prior generations when fascists have tried to gain control of governments. We can't let our guard down and ever underestimate this man or the forces that want him to win. They have packed the courts, and they've packed local election boards. And they don't care that we all laugh at him.

AMC: Lifetime TV Movie Franchise Announced
Eight is Enough and Hart to Hart are interesting analogies because both movies picked up exactly where they left off years earlier. Arguably they were watched by fewer people, and certainly they were on the air for a shorter time. Which is why I am so intrigued by the question, will the AMC writers feel the need to re-introduce the characters? For example, I'm sure we'll get the typical dialogue where characters unnaturally and unnecessarily reference each other's connection (i.e. "Hey cousin Joe!" or "If that's what you want, Mother"). But, will they need some newcomer who needs to be educated on the history of the Chandlers, the Martins, and Courtland Industries? Personally, I'd love it to focus on Tad's daughter, Jenny because she is the nexus of so much history. They have a huge creative task of balancing nostalgia with attracting a new audience, and I am tuning in just to see how they pull it off.

The funny thing is, I looked it up, Stephanie was SORASed to her current age, 18 years ago. Shayna Rose played her in 2006, and Shelly Hennig in 2007. So, she is one of those characters that aged once, and then stayed the same for two decades. She's either far too youthful to have a kid, or she's premenopausal. Who can tell? 😄

DAYS: September 2024 Discussion Thread
As dumb as I think it is when characters talk to themselves out loud on soaps, I am amused by Fiona and FAbby talking to portraits of dead guys. Once a week would've gone unnoticed, but when they use the same troupe in back to back episodes, it seems ridiculous. Because never, in the history of humankind, has a person in real life walked into a room and overheard someone confessing their nefarious plans out loud.

DAYS: Super Couple returning!!
I wonder if streaming is adherent to sweeps, given that ratings don't apply to Peacock? Although it does seem like the pattern of four annual upticks in story have been preserved, Sami's return will be off cycle. This was my first thought. Bo wakes up, they kiss, and then there is some excuse why they'll no longer live in Salem… Although maybe they'll foreclose on the Fancy Face and take the boat back from Ben 😉
