  1. Single character best/worst affair Alan Quartermaine edition Best - Alan/Lucy, it was in character for both of them to get together, Lucy was using Alan for money and status, Alan was using Lucy for sex and revenge against Monica for her relationship with Sean. However, the outcome of the relationship brought Alan and Monica back together and strengthened their bond. It was truly remarkable that Alan never looked like a buffoon even when Lucy showed up at their wedding in that huge red hat. Worst - Alan/Rhonda Wexler - came at a low period for Alan in his career and his dependency on pain killers, this relationship teetered between a Days of Wine & Roses relationship between two addicts and romanticizing rich white guys saving poor women from abuse. What could have been a responsible story about medical professionals struggling with sobriety turned into a sorrowful story of the accidental death of a low life all played out in the tiny Wexler kitchen.
  2. On today's Radio Andy show he clarified that Rinna brought receipts to back up that she and Harry were invited guests to the Elton Party, and Sutton's only role was that she asked them to sit at her table. However, the discussion was cut for time. Talk about getting lost in sauce Sutton's point was that Rinna never said thank you, which was was in defense of Garcelle not saying thank you for the sauce. Regardless of who paid for the seats (which seems very dé·clas·sé to bring up), it never justified Rinna not thanking Sutton for having her at the table. It seems like a classic housewife move that they work so hard to prove they're right that the forget the point of the argument.
  3. A decade ago if you would've told me that Matt Lauer was going to be more problematic than Bryant Gumble I would never have believed it...
  4. One more thought, I believe that after Jefferson Brown died Raven still needed a connection to Geraldine. To me, the Raven/Geraldine relationship is what motivated Raven to pursue both Sky and Logan. Nadine was such a terrible mother and Keith was such a disappointment as a son, that Geraldine and Raven fulfilled each other's need for a family. Neither Jefferson Brown nor Logan Swift were particularly nice to Raven, they didn't put her on a pedestal, and she had compete with other women for their attention. She had easy access to richer men who might adore her. But, I maintain that she wanted to be close to Geraldine because she represented the type of mother that Nadine could never be. In turn, Geraldine was frequently looking a replacement son in both Logan and Sky, but they were really just men who could fulfill her desires for power that were unattainable given her gender. A women her age and wealth would rarely have sought a place in congress or local government, so she used Logan and Sky as pawns in order to follow through on her own agenda. On the other hand, Raven really needed her maternal instincts and she enjoyed her dependency because the men in the Whitney family were always so selfish. That's why I think of Raven and Geraldine as endgame, as opposed to any other pairing on EON, and why there needed to be some male character would tie them together in plots after Jefferson Brown's death. One could argue that it didn't need to be Sky, but it had to be someone that they shared in common.
  5. It is a hat trick of pseudonyms because they had Jefferson Brown pretending to be Jim Dedrickson so that he could get plastic surgery in order to pretend to be Schulyer Whitney. And don't forget his ally Bruno masquerading as his twin brother Gunther. I sympathize with Sleasar not only having to write a way that Sky survived an avalanche, but also how his trusted man-servant had an identical twin, that takes a lot of creative license, gambling with audience trust, and trying to limit exposition so that everyone in Monticello doesn't need to explain the details to each other. I certainly agree that Chris and Jody were insufficient replacements for Deborah and Nicole. But, I also think it is emblematic of his style that the retcon of Jody as Nicole's semi-sibling is not given a lot of explanation. She shows up and Miles and Nicole instantly take on a parental role. There's no need to do the math about her age versus when Nicole's father died. The story just goes on until the Eden debacle when we finally learn a bit more about Jody's mother. I also think from a casting perspective Lee Goddard makes a better gigolo/disco owner than a cult leader.
  6. I don't know which is more cringe-worthy, the fact that the hosts still dress up in costumes, the idea that the costume budget seems about 5% of what it used to be (remember those horrific Peanuts costumes?), or Carson Daly trying desperately to hold on to his youth (on every day, not just Halloween) by dying his hair the most unnatural shade of black since Gomez Adams. Also, can someone please stop trying to make Natalie Morales interesting? Kelly as Stevie Nicks, a little lazy Who is Kristen Welker? And is the lady with the camera behind her supposed to be RHONY Dorinda Medley, or the old afghan from the Roseanne show?
  7. That is the best explanation that I've ever read on the subject - I appreciate that Personally, I would have kept with the Kelly vs Eden rivalry that they played with later in the series during the Robert Barr story. Eden, once free from being number two to Channing, could've continued to try and ingratiate herself with CC. Her motives for fighting Gina and Santana would've been cleaner if there was clear through line to her trying to keep CC as her own. Kelly could've sided with Sophia. She and Joe could've used Armonti as a power base, or they could've been part of the environmental crowd that opposed CC's drilling and construction efforts. I like the idea of a gender twist on the Mason and Channing antagonism into a Kelly vs Eden battle, with Eden always underestimating Kelly, and Kelly using her love of Joe to motivate her fight for the underdogs of Santa Barbara. Both of them would have opposed the Sophia and CC relationship, but for different reasons. And, most importantly, both would have had more agency, given their status and power, rather than constantly falling victim to every new crook in town. Also, I liked the brief period during the Gillis trial when Mason and Warren worked together. I wish there had been more exploration of that friendship. Two nepo-babies, trying to make a name for themselves separate from their father's wealth, ambitious, but still a little spoiled.
  8. In hindsight I don't understand why Joe was released from prison after five years? He was convicted of murder, and he wasn't cleared until the false confession after the earthquake, and later Cruz proves his innocence, after his death. So, why did he get out on parole? Five years seems like a very short sentence, especially given CC's influence, one would think that Joe would not be released so quickly.
  9. I plan to still use Twitter as a source for breaking news, but the minute that he tries to repress responses like this one, I'm out.
  10. I support this statement completely. As a gay man, I also do not feel comfortable when people use pronouns pejoratively. It feels regressive and I don't find it humorous. It should go without saying that we all respect the right to express our opinions in whatever way we please, however when another member of the community expresses concern, it is polite to take that under advisement rather than snap back with more vitriol.
  11. While history shows that it is entirely possible that people will move en mass to another platform, I am also against the government regulation of Twitter and other forms of social media; except in the case of foreign governments interfering in privacy issues. Even as a liberal, I hope that the feds remain limited in their control of social media, because I feel that content should not be restricted, and it is up to individuals to be able to interpret real from false information. In other words, just because some folks are too dumb to not question conspiracy theories, doesn't mean that the federal government should determine their validity. And, I think it only feeds into the false-flag-fears of conspiracy minded individuals to find reasons to regulate based on ownership or crazed individuals attacking politicians. One other note - the Fox News/Republican response to the Pelosi break-in is predictably offensive. One Fox News anchor suggested that the attacker should be out on parole already because that is the standard for a minor break-in, and then there were the false-equivalency idiots who were angry that nobody responded when GOP senators faced legal protests outside of their offices or homes. However, the constant portrayal of every current event as being reflective of a divided nation is really what makes me angry. When Squeaky Fromme tried assassinate the President, nobody thought that an entire culture of Manson devotees, or even counter-culture enthusiasts, were at fault. We were evolved enough to know the difference between a mentally disturbed individual and the values of a sub-culture. It feels like modern media willfully elevates fringe opinions in an effort to create a constant debate, even when one does not naturally exist.
  12. thanks @dc11786 , but how did Melinda (and Brad) find out about the switch? Also, whenever I read 1982 recaps it sounds like Jenny is very sad to give Mary to Katrina, but she's never angry at Karen, Marco, or the other half of Llanview that seemed to know about the switch. Is that correct, and if so, why?
  13. Meanwhile, the infamous fan of park benches gets multiple responses and I still don't have a timeline of the baby switch story...
  14. She was engaged to Leigh Hobson (aka Peter Brady) and married to Denny Hobson Yes, poor Donna kept getting older while her daughters boyfriends stayed frozen in time
  15. With the news that cable companies are dropping free access to Peacock, I wonder if the next move is content providers pressuring cable systems to drop cloud-based DVR's in favor of streaming? If the networks learned a lesson from VCR's a generation ago, it would seem wise to drop DVR's where people can ff through commercials and make consumers watch non-live TV on streaming where they can make additional income from advertisements. Cloud based services are becoming more expensive to maintain, while more people have access to faster internet access to make it easier to stream, and younger viewers don't place value on saving media to watch later. That being said, whenever I watched SNL on YouTube it felt like torture having to watch the same three commercials over and over at each break. I feel like I pay for Peacock not due to any programming, but just so that I don't have to hear the same annoying pizza commercial for the rest of my life.
  16. Reading the 1978 recaps on that thread made me think about how much they futzed with Sally and Cecile's ages. In 1978 Blaine is moving to Bay City to begin her romance with Jamey. So, we assume that Blaine and Jamey were both in their early twenties, because Dennis was a college sophomore. At the same time, Sally is clearly a teen with a crush on Joey Perrini. Then by 1984, a couple of marriages and pregnancies later, Sally is dating Peter Love and her romantic rival is Cecile who seems to have been de-SORASed into that plot because she was probably older than Donna if they had aged in real time. I mean Cecile was editing Brava while Sally was still a kid in boarding school in 1979. It never ceases to amaze me that as much I as enjoyed MPK's Sally, the character has no connection to who she was as a teen. Caitlin was supposed to be the rebel who was corrupting good girl Sally. Meanwhile, she's already been engaged a few times, had a kid, and had been a wild child. while Caitlin had only had the one romance with Brittney and was falsely imprisoned prior to Bay City for defending a lady.
  17. @RavenWhitney@Sean@robbwolff Lesson learned, neither Sleasar nor internet sources are infallible. Thanks for setting me straight (figuratively, not literally). But, it does raise some additional questions regarding OLTL's historic Jenny/Katrina baby switch. 1. Did the same writer who wrote the switch get to resolve the story? (I assume the Sam Hall writing crew felt the need to resolve it before Judith Light left). 2. When and how did Brad become aware of the switch? 3. It's bad enough that Jenny became romantically involved with Larry just prior to David's arrival (after all she was the most seductive ex-novice in soap history), but how could she have ever forgiven Brad at that point in history?
  18. One other huge lost opportunity for me was the Emmerdale 50 year special. Rather than recapping stories in order to lure viewers into the cannon of the series, it was pairs of talking head actors (with way too many Dingles) reminiscing about shooting scenes outside in the cold. There was no distinction between this special and the 40th anniversary special. There was no insight into changing directions on the show due to producers or writers. There was no sense of the cultural impact (unlike the memorable Corrie special that had clips of the societal response to the Free Deirdre movement, and explored the tabloids effects on the soap). Emmerdale has had some real life controversies that could have been covered now with the passage of time. So, it felt cheep and poorly constructed.
  19. Further confusion on the Sleasar timeline from SOD - a time capsule from 1982 that states he was paired with Sam Hall that year - is there any possibility that he wrote more than one show at time, and then was made headwriter after he was fired from EON?
  20. AW - Reginald Love was originally referred to as Brandon GH - Harland Barrett and his daughters Julia and Brenda were initially proposed as a wheeling-dealing sexy businessman in his 50's and his daughters Justine and Kelly
  21. EDIT - Echo's wiki says she was created by Slesar and introduced in March 1983. So, perhaps he was fired before the end of her story as Giles was previewed in the SOD story on Jean Arley and in 1983 SOD was still writing synopses weeks behind what was being shown on screen at the time of publication?
  22. I was interested in the discussion of Henry Sleasar's run as head writer on OLTL on the EON thread. Given that I am terrible at remembering who wrote what when, I went back to the wiki which states that Sleasar came on as co-writer with Sam Hall in July 1982, then was solo head writer from February to June 1983 until Jean Arley came on as Executive Producer and fired him. I then went to Tumblr to read the SOD synopsis of the period. The story highlights seem to be the Delilah/Bo/Asa/Becky quad (which doesn't seem very classic Sleasar) as well as the rewriting of Bo actually being Asa's son. There's a mystery involving someone framing Jenny for murder which is very short term and seems more in line with his classic storytelling. Then, Echo DiSavoy and David Rinaldi are introduced, (I would assume they were created by the Corringtons) which changes the focus of the plot from the Buchanans back to Viki and Dorian. All in all, I would say that the scale and orientation of OLTL were poor fits for Slesar who seemed to thrive with a smaller cast and a singular, interwoven, focused plotline. Along the way there was this interesting story in SOD about Jean Arley who was hired when Joe Stuart moved to Loving. I am always amused by SOD interviews with new execs who want to promote ideas like new lighting or avant garde wardrobes, rather than innovations in storytelling. It is remarkable that a six page article never mentions the change in writers, nor is there much in terms of a vision for the characters beyond where they live and how the commute. Perhaps, Ms. Arley only lasted a year, because she seemed more interested in production design than plot? To paraphrase what James Carville once said about politics and the economy, "it's the story, dummy." https://www.tumblr.com/classicsodoltl/147394714780/one-life-to-live-soap-opera-digest-synopsis-june Arley went on to be one of the eight million people who produced the final years of SFT. But, I am interested in other's memories of her time as executive producer. In hindsight it is easy to see how Rauch's vision for grandiose stories grew from this fallow period.
  23. I thought you were referring to Mindy's mother. What was her name and was she dead?
  24. There's been praise of Henry Slesar's work on EON within that thread that has characterized his work on Capitol as a flop, however I disagree. What I appreciate about Slesar's general approach is the interweaving of plots that makes it feel as if you are watching a bullet train filled with stories. Certainly on EON we had the pleasure of watching how Mansion of the Damned evolved into the Margo's murder when Nola Madison killed Margo because of her jealousy of Margo's affair with Elliott Dorn, which in turn had an effect of the Puppet Murders where Elliott was murdered by the Molly Sherwood who housed Draper Scott when he was accused of Margo's murder, and then evolved into the story where Emily Michaels, who was raised by Molly, had an affair with Sharky, who worked for the plastic surgeon who treated faux-Sky. Similarly on Capitol, we got Thomas McCandless caring for his disguised back-from-the-dead father Baxter, who was in hiding from Victor Markham, whose daughter shot his love rival Mark on his wedding day to Clarissa, Baxter's widow, whose daughter-in-law bore a striking resemblance to the shooter Jenny, who was once married to Zed Diamond, who went on to have a romance with Sen Denning's daughter Sloane. I think of this as a creative apex for Capitol and I've never considered it to be a flop.
  25. I don't know why they stuck Allie and Gabi with kids, if they are never a part of their story? Both women seem much more concerned with finding love than raising a child. There is no discussion about the cost of child care. They never seem burdened with having to cook, clean, or educate their spawn, and I have no idea where Henry or Arianna sleep.
