Your daily (or nightly) thought
I just read two articles on how tipping culture is out of control yet I still don't care. If I encounter one of those pads that suggest an additional 20% charge for a service when tipping is not customary, I simply don't add it. (1) If it is an establishment that I don't frequent then I am unconcerned about the judgment of the employees and (2) unlike tipping a waiter, I have no idea where that tip is going or how it will be divided among the 2 or 3 workers who helped me. I've always understood it to be a part of the software programmed into the pad, not an actual expectation to tip the guy who put my Amazon return behind the counter for UPS pickup. Like when you get a survey on the back of a receipt, I assume very few people complete it. Is anyone else tipping every time they see that Ipad?

YR new intro!
I can appreciate the effort, but why do all of the actors have baggy eyes? Sandy Dvore highlighted the actor's best features. This looks like a group of people who need a nap.

I wouldn't characterize research published by The Columbia School of Journalism as random. And, Media Matters has gone on record that the 60 Minutes interview was bad journalism. But, I could not find any citations since 2018 of CBS "skewing conservative". If you find any let me know, I would be interested to read them.

I find the answers to my query about why social media did not like the 60 Minutes piece interesting and I enjoy reading your responses. But, the assumption that current CBS management is "skewed conservative" is not true. Bob Bakish the head of Paramount Global is a lifelong Democrat and his predecessor Les Moonves may have been a creep, but he is the prototypical Malibu liberal. A survey from April 2021, demonstrated that most of the tv audience feels that CBS news leans left. https://www.allsides.com/news-source/cbs-news-media-bias and historically the Viacom PAC has always given more to Democratic Candidates Perhaps there is some confusion based on their marketing toward an older audience, but the idea that they are not conservative is also proven by the fact that they attract very little ad revenue from traditional conservative media buyers. So, I don't think it stands to reason that 60 Minutes would produce a piece sympathetic to Congresswoman Greene based on the political leanings of the company or the audience they are trying to attract. I think your points about 60 Minutes portraying her as a maverick rather than a liar and not going hard enough to counteract her rhetoric are valid, but I take exception that it is indicative of corporate morale. Also, I'm an eternal optimist that feels that we are not as divided as we are portrayed and that she represents the worst of a very small, but vocal, minority.

I forget the details of the takeover. Was Cory in some financial trouble that made it vulnerable to being acquired by Iris? Were those financial issues ever resolved, and could that have been part of the follow-up? I would hope, given Harding Lemay's track record, that the follow-up would have explored the depths of Mac, Iris, Amanda, and Rachel's relationship because he never seemed inspired by business-based stories. But, IIRC nobody was ever concerned about the economic health of the publishing company after Mac's death.

ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
There are some actors that I can only reference from their soap roles. I assume from this that Peyton List has gone on to great success, but she'll always be Lucy Montgomery to me.

@VeeI agree that the marketing was offensive. But, we both know that neither 60 Minutes nor Leslie Stahl has any more say in how CBS chooses to run commercials than WaPo reporters have in how their editors write a headline. What I question is the social media response that confuses reporting the news with promoting radical opinions. For example, Leslie Stahl doesn't need to clap back when Congresswoman Green calls all democrats pedophiles based on her misinformed view that support of gender-affirming surgery is perverse because her simple exclamation of "wow" was powerful enough; especially because Stahl is of a generation that valued non-disclosure of their personal political beliefs in order not to show bias to the audience. On the other hand, The View recently had Sarah Sanders on and got caught in an easy trap when debating the issue of defunding the police. Sanders took the predictable role of diverting attention to honoring the risks that the police take when enforcing the law. But, they missed the opportunity to ask if the constituency wants to defund the police should the state government retaliate by not providing alternative emergency services. My point is that debating these hacks only implies that someone should win, rather than acknowledging that facts favor the progressives.

Days: April 2023 Discussion Thread
It makes sense that it is Tommy and not Bo (we've all noted that the acting choices to indicate that this is not Bo are not subtle). It also fits with the detail that they keep referencing that pod has been around longer than Bo has been dead. However, I still cringe every time he rolls his r's when saying "Kiriakis". An old reference for sure, but it's giving Ruffles have ridges vibes.

The Politics Thread
I'm confused by the discussion around Marjorie Taylor Greene on 60 Minutes. It is a news program and she is newsworthy because her hate-filled rhetoric has gained traction within the GOP. Although she was elected by less than 175,000 votes, which accounts for less than 25% of her district, and she was not allowed to sit on any committees for her first term, the GOP feels as if she is a magnetic force that will bring in contributions. There is a sense on social media that any attention to contrary opinions is terrible. However, I think there is value in exposing how these are minority, radical ideas. I often reflect on when Jon Stewart went on CNN's Crossfire in the early 00s and told them they were ruining America by creating an illusion that extremist opinions are worthy of debate. 60 Minutes has Ms. Greene on to demonstrate that the audience of the most-watched news program in America does not buy her uninformed beliefs. 60 minutes is not endorsing her racism by having her on the show; they are exposing it.

Loving/The City Discussion Thread
@Kane After reading your profile of Linc Beecham I have some questions 1. What ever happened to his brother? 2. Why did Rebekah need Linc to marry into Zona's family if the Beechams were rich enough to take over AE? 3. Did you have a favorite Linc (of the two actors)? 4. Was Zona short for Arizona? It is such an unusual name, even for a soap. Or was she created by a writer known for odd character names (Eben, Egypt, and Staige come to mind)?

Days: March 2023 Discussion Thread
Here's my prediction My highlight of the week is Kayla! I love how they wrote her as smart, sassy, and funny. She's been such a drag in recent years. But, this Kayla's got a spark in her that I adore. Have they played with the architecture of Marlena's home again? Was there always a room behind the fireplace? And IRL who would build a hallway behind a fireplace? Shouldn't it be on an exterior wall? Also, good to know the ISA lets you keep your costume jewelry and high heels when they lock you up, they're so kind.

Ryan Seacreast leaving "Live with Kelly & Ryan"
I feel like Kelly's recent Variety interview confirmed for me that the tabloids no longer have any power over the media. Kathy Lee was raked over the coals by the tabloids. There were weekly covers with unflattering photos of her yelling. And for what? She was a perky host with a successful commercial career who built two live-in health clinics for people with AIDS. In retrospect, we know that the constant cruise commercials and KMart clothes were probably used to supplement her lack of income from Live. When she was involved in a child labor scandal, her response changed the industry and she replied immediately. When her husband publically cheated with an airline hostess, she stayed on the air and maintained her composure. Yet, she was the punching bag of the National Inquirer for years. Kelly learned from Kathy Lee's experience and avoided tabloid drama. She would appear occasionally, but there wasn't much traction, nor fodder for trash media critiques. However, 20 years ago, this interview would have made her a front-page staple. The tabs hate whenever a woman expresses a need for equity in pay. They would have dragged her as an avarice villain who forced her co-stars out of their jobs, rather than recognizing her as one of the longest-running daytime hosts (Regis hosted for 22 years, and Kelly has been there for 23) who deserves some respect.

Illustrated Soap Ads - the good, the bad, and the oddities
While over at CBS they chose to forgo images altogether, even though they had one of the best-looking casts of all time - coupled with one of the worst taglines of all time. credit to @RetroNews on twitter for the images One more - a classic. I adore the classic ABC style of one big image, and then several smaller ones with captions - I consider this "window" type ad to be iconic - although Delia's breast and shoulder are oddly distorted, the bubble font screams 1980

Illustrated Soap Ads - the good, the bad, and the oddities
Like most of the illustrated NBC ads of the 1980s the actors were recognizable (including the iconic perm), but the depiction was not always flattering (Liza would benefit from better lighting), and it is odd how the lower text gets lost in the background image. Also, I had to laugh that the first selling point that NBC chose to emphasize was not the drama, nor the romance, but that the timeslot was so convenient. In comparison by 1989, the stock images were totally unrecognizable (especially when you consider the rather photogenic cast).

Not unfrosted, I hope, that's the best part. Also, Rafe's another one in a long line of aging soap hunks who have to lay off the single-process hair dye. The black eyebrows are making him look like Groucho Marx (and not in a good way).

GH: Classic Thread
Maurice seems amusingly out of touch, and if you would have told me that he was not in the same room as the other actors, I would have believed it. But, his response to the "me too" question was the most intriguing part for me. It seemed like he had never understood, (prior to this moment), that although the genre is geared toward a female audience, women actors, writers, and directors still often feel overlooked and underappreciated. I was glad that the women's experiences were respected.

GH: Classic Thread
https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/general-hospital-60th-anniversary-genie-francis-kin-shriner-1235567398/ The highlights for me (both humorous and interesting) Do you all have any memories of particularly meaningful storylines? (Kristina )Wagner: I fell in love with my co-star, and we had two children together. I remember the day that happened. It was 1986, I think it was a Policeman’s Ball. Dancing with him — I mean, he wasn’t falling in love with me, but I was falling in love with him. I remember the music, it was “Careless Whisper” by Wham! I’m so embarrassed. It’s so cheesy and campy, now looking back on it, but that shaped the character as I moved forward, really, with the rest of my life on that show. And what I’ve learned, if we get a little more personal, is that you cannot live out the fantasy you’re pretending on stage. It’s harmful, and it’s toxic. You really have to learn how to step back and create your own life at home, because we are grinding away at this every single day. These have been huge, big life lessons for me. And I’m grateful to sit here and be able to share it. Luke was killed off last year. What was it like for you to act in that storyline? Did it feel like closure in some way, or had you already said goodbye? Francis: Honestly, I just didn’t believe it when it happened — me, Genie. I felt like they can’t really be doing this, because what did they get from this? And so I didn’t believe it. I thought perhaps they were laying groundwork for a wonderful return for him. But so far, I guess that hasn’t happened. So I don’t know. I guess I believe it now. Makes me sad. But do you think the door is open? I mean, obviously people have come back from much worse deaths! Francis: The cable car crashed — but they didn’t find a body! I believe that “General Hospital” was the first show to go back into production in Los Angeles in summer 2020. Benard: Yeah. Frank saved our jobs twice. What do you mean? Benard: Well, 10 years ago, when he came in, I thought we were done — and he kept it going. And then with COVID, he was the first one — because if it didn’t succeed, who knows what would have happened? So it was good for Frank. And I’m not trying to kiss his ass! Do you feel like Steve Burton could come back if there’s no longer a vaccine mandate? Or if he changes his mind? Francis: I certainly hope so. Because he’s so missed — on screen and off. You’ve gotta admit, one of the nicest human beings who’s ever been with us. Benard: He just works out too much. He’s too big!

Eric Braeden drags Eva Longoria for her comments about working in daytime
On Sanchez and Winter's podcast He Said, Ella Dijo, the two (who are also married) weighed in on Braeden's comments. "I was like, 'You're messing with my girl? Not happening,'" Sanchez said. "Nothing Eva said was inappropriate," Winter said. "This guy is completely out of line in my opinion because he doesn't know what Eva's financial stance was at that time in her career. I guarantee you he was making a ton more money than she was." Sanchez defended Longoria and directed her comments to Braeden, saying, "You were out of line. What you said was completely uncalled for." Winter added, presumably while sipping some piping hot chamomile, "This guy is trying to find a way in his older age to get back in the spotlight for whatever reason and to make it a point to defend daytime, which she was not attacking."

Days: March 2023 Discussion Thread
It's ironic that after so much criticism about the scarcity of apartments in Salem, today's whole episode was about real estate. Rafe was finding real estate listings for Talia (hopefully she saved some of her salary as a doctor to supplement her income at the bakery) and Eric was scouring gallery sites in order to remind us that he's a photographer. I assume that Sloan did not trash Paulina's office, but we'll meet someone else from her past who was the real villain, and that will clear Chanel, whose culpability has never been clarified within the story, even today when Jada tried to explain the backstory to her sister.

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
Despite the fact that CC was played by multiple actors with a blustery persona, he was actually a bit of a soft loser. He was the second choice of both of his wives. Pamela dated his brother first and Sofia was infamously in love with Lionel prior to romancing CC. We never saw him be very vicious in business transactions. Yes, his oil rigs were a pollution risk, and Maggie's husband was injured, but CC was never portrayed as negligent in either situation. He went on to build a hotel and a polo club without incident. And, if anything, his companies were easily taken over by Robert Barr, so he wasn't a brilliant tycoon. Finally, until we met Megan Richardson, it was assumed that CC stayed single for the entire period of Sophia's absence in order to raise his children. Ted and Eden have exchanged memories of CC's high standards, but he was never a tyrant. So, it is ironic that Bateman, Richardson, and Jed Allen played him as such a domineering force when the story as written for CC is that he was nepo-baby who failed both at love and in most of his business endeavors (the hotel never thrived, the casino sunk, the oil rigs were blown up, and nobody went back to the polo club).

THE COLBYS
I'm surprised to read that Charlton Heston was in support of the show. Per the TV Academic Interview of Aaron Spelling: In 1986, Barbara Stanwyck opted to end her contract and leave the series after its first season, reportedly calling it "a turkey" and telling co-creator Esther Shapiro "This is the biggest pile of garbage I ever did" and that "It's one thing to know you're making a lot of money off vulgarity, but when you don't know it's vulgar - it's plain stupid." On the contrary, Charlton Heston always had supported the show and stated its cancellation "was premature" as "we were coming closer to being a creative production team that could make the kind of show we'd planned on from the beginning." Because I assumed that he might opt out of a season 3. And if Jeff went back to Denver, it would leave very few of the titular Colby's on the show. But, I guess we learn the lesson every day to never assume.
