Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
OK, I need a refresher because I'm getting my Sentells and Kendalls mixed up. So, with the Sentells - the General is Gen 1, then Rusty Sr is Gen 2, and Travis aka Rusty Jr is Gen 3, although Travis was really Martin's son - correct Then, I think I've confused bitchy ex-wives. Mignon is Rusty Sr.'s ex-wife, so who was Lloyd Kendall's ex-wife? And wasn't one of his sons actually fathered by another man?

Thank goodness, that makes more sense because no one on earth has been named Rusty Jr.

Closeted (gay) actors formerly on the soaps
Gordon Thompson's 1991 SOD profile when he was hired as Mason on SB recycled the old Raymond Burr foreign ex-wife story.... He was just too busy for love.

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
Today I learned - that Gina Gallego (Santana) has been married since 1983 to Joel Bailey, who played Channing's boyfriend, Lindsay Smith. Not many couples can say that they both acted as the lover of a dead soap character.

@dc11786 Do you think that this was written to inform the incoming writing staff or for promotional material? The language is so flowery. It makes me wonder what, for example, local affiliate PR people or soap journalists were meant to do with this character study? I cannot imagine modern head writers using such detailed histories to delineate their characters. Also, how odd to call Dr. Rose Hamilton an old school feminist, and use her ideology as an impediment to romance. She was a feminist, not a nun.

Jann Wenner removed from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame board
It is so bizarre. When I first read the story, I thought that he just brushed off the issue of inclusivity. But, then listening to the audio and hearing him double down on the lack of articulation by Joni Mitchel and other female artists, I was dumb struck. It was both an idiotic answer to the question and an offensive take on the issue. Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen have both admitted to openly cribbing from the style of black R&B performers. So, to dismiss the influence and legacy of these men and women is appalling. Yet, it is interesting to see the etymology of why movements like disco and new wave were dismissed by rock audiences, based on the biases of rock journalists.

The Google search for Charlene Keel is a fascinating rabbit hole. She had a short career as a rock journalist. She has a current business as a ghostwriter. She lists episodes of Days of Our Lives and Fantasy Island among her credits. Her social media leans politically progressive. And, she was on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson for her first book about the risqué life of being a flight attendant. There's some ironic humor in Johnny correcting himself by calling them attendants, but then always referencing them as girls. I adore that kind of Jacqueline Suzanne, Jackie Collins mildly ribald humor to sell a book.

GENERAL HOSPITAL September 2023 Discussion Thread
Forgive me for always wondering about logic when none exists, but why does Blair believe that Martin will marry Lucy if she loses her money? Wouldn't he be even more inclined to want to continue to receive alimony if Lucy was broke? While sabotaging Lucy might make Martin sad, it is hardly a solution to stop paying him alimony.

@dc11786 Are you suggesting that there were multiple pilots filmed, or is this just part of the development process? It is no wonder that Charlene Keel disavowed the soap, it sounds like none of the people or places from the book found their way onto the screen. Do we know if the school was called Haddon Hall in her book? I am going to assume that the production decided to reference it as a college and not a boarding school to avoid the issues with the women's ages when pairing them romantically.

Days of Our Lives: September 2023 Discussion Thread
Here's the thing (as has been said before) there's zero tension in the Stefan v EJ war. Neither of them ran Dimera Enterprises for a significant amount of time. Neither has a plan that is being diminished by the presence of the other at the company. And they're both always going to be rich regardless of their title. If anyone dies because of this fight (as I assume will occur), it is a pity, because it is a meaningless rivalry with no stakes involved. Dramatic Writing 101 - the audience needs to feel the tension in order to commit to the plot. For example, I am committed to finding out what happened to Victor, because I care about Maggie. But this EJ v Stefan story is forgettable.

Days of Our Lives: September 2023 Discussion Thread
I like the Gwen and Kristen stuff. I think Stacy Haiduk does a better job playing Kristin as a delightful schemer, rather than a homicidal vixen. And I enjoy the consistency that the character of Kristin has always been a good friend to her allies. Question of the Day Why did Theresa have to break into Victor's briefcase? Certainly, Shane would not have dropped off a locked case for Brady without a key or a code. And even Alex isn't dumb enough not to notice that the case with tampered with. Given the soap-laws-against-cell-phone-usage, I won't question why Shane didn't call Brady when he recovered the case, because clearly that's what a rational person would do IRL. However, I really liked the way that Shane interacted with Theresa. It makes sense with their history that he wants someone who puts his daughter first. And he knows that Theresa has done much worse things than using Alex to make Brady jealous. So, I appreciated that rather than getting angry, he just reassured her that she deserves more.

DAYS: 2 kids to be SORASed
Why do we still use European boarding schools as an excuse for SORASing? It's not like there are hundreds of European boarding schools. Yet, a huge percentage of Salem's teenagers were educated abroad, but none are fluent in a foreign language.

CBS: Drew Barrymore Talk Show
Beyond the ethics of crossing a picket line, it feels like most daytime talk shows are not well-equipped to function without actors as guests and writers creating segments. Kelly & Mark have taken to doing mostly cooking, shopping, and exercise segments. They have 3-4 reality show stars a week with variable success depending on the charm of the subjects. But, they can rely on their banter to get through the first 20 minutes of each episode. JHud has shown us that she lacks the ability to be extemporaneous. And it would be difficult to believe that Drew & The Talk were discussing cultural Hot Topics without writers. I mean, The View can discuss the headlines. But, someone, usually a writer, has to find the types of quirky human interest and viral cultural moments that occupy Drew and The Talk.

No surprise that The Hack, I mean The Wrap, would do a story about daytime talkshows surviving without writers. I mean, in any other forum, this would not be something to crow about. https://www.thewrap.com/karamo-brown-daytime-talk-show-can-film-wga-strike/

Ratings from the 80's
Just for my own peace of mind, it bears repeating that weekly changes in ratings are 95% more likely due to chance than any singular variable. The speculation and nostalgia is fun, but it lacks logical coherence with basic statistical principles.

Billy Miller Dead at 43
He passed from complications from a stroke. He was diagnosed in 2020 with Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a progressive neurological disorder which affects walking, balance, and eye movement. Average survival is 6 to 10 years after diagnosis. So sad, but it is one of those times that we can be thankful that his suffering is over.

ALL: The niche potential for streaming classic soaps
Beyond the financial constraints that inhibit streaming serialized dramas, we should also consider the creative issues. For me, one of the reasons that repeats of prime time dramas never worked in syndication is that it is like watching someone slowly tell a joke when you already know the punchline.

EastEnders: Discussion Thread
They are getting a ton of millage out of this story. The actor, 62, who plays Thomas 'Rocky' Cotton in the BBC soap, is said to have quit after cast members were denied pantomime roles next year. Brian and other stars of the soap receive lucrative six-figure earnings from their pantomime roles, but show executives have asked them to choose between these gigs and returning to Albert Square in 2024.
