Days of Our Lives: September 2023 Discussion Thread
Stefan and EJ have been fighting about a proposed board meeting for months. Rallying support from various family members. Drugging each other. Vowing to work together, and then vowing to suppress each other. Meanwhile, it feels as if there is nothing that they are building toward. There's no date for the board meeting. There's no project that has to be completed. There's no deal that has to be made. And there's no tension, because no matter who is CEO, they're all going to still live together in a mansion. Also, I have very little sympathy for Belle today. She's an enabler if she thinks things will go back to normal for her husband after spending one night in the hospital. She needs to take her head out of her behind, and start to recognize the degree of psychopathology experienced by her husband and her daughter.

DAYS Promo "A National Treasure"
It's funny you should say that because it is probably not a coincidence that this story begins just as the subscription rate for Peacock increases.

Is it your theory that Pikeman is someone already on-screen, a returning character, or someone new?

@Soapsuds When that happens, are you still able to stream on ABC.com using your cable login, or do you get locked out of that option as well?

I can't tell if you are using hyperbole for humorous effect, otherwise, I think you've underestimated both the vast majority of the audience and the world.

NBC Daytime
I hadn't considered that issue, and I think that is very astute. DAYS and AW were diverse, but they needed a linking variable. SB was thematically the best fit between those two soaps. Passions seems too akin to DAYS, and all the AW spin-offs were too closely tied to that audience. But, if any of those soaps had lasting power, they could've shaped the characteristics of the daytime lineup.

Days of Our Lives: September 2023 Discussion Thread
Is Elliot Roth's,(aka the von Leuschner lawyer), loved one going to have ties to Salem? It seemed rather foreshadowing that they showed him talking and phone and saying he would be home soon. Also, given his history of going to drag shows, and the obvious lack of gendered language when speaking to his partner, is Elliot also going to be gay? Because they could've just re-used the actor who played Dimitri's family member to do all of this inheritance stuff. So, I wonder if there's a story arc for Mr. Roth...

Days: August 2023 Discussion Thread
I'm not even going to touch the Leo stuff from today, because I've said my peace on the matter. I thought Brady dropping charges against Phillip due to the custody issue was clever, because it demonstrated that my confusion over the judge's decision was part of a larger plan on behalf of the writers, so I will give them credit for that. Although, it's rather clunky that Kristen happens to be at the pub picking up food for Rachel, just as Brady and Belle are discussing the issue. I mean, don't they have chefs at the mansion? And why does everyone from Alamania (or wherever the von Luchshner's live) speak with different accents?

Days: August 2023 Discussion Thread
So, I'm not a fan of Leo, because I don't enjoy silliness in general. However, some of this criticism seems to deny that compared to any other soap (cough cough B&B), DAYS has the largest representation of LGBTQIA characters. And, not all gay characters have to be likable, moral, upstanding citizens. Without shaming anyone or being too provocative, this response from Twitter/X seems to reflect an overall discomfort within our community of seeing less traditionally masculine presenting gay male characters in culture. Historically, the same critique about highlighting "sissies" in fiction has always been an issue. Mostly from men who abhor an image that used against them by bullies and bigots. Personally, I believe, we should embrace the sissies like Paul Lynde and Rip Taylor as trailblazing comedians of their time, rather than mock them by using contemporary standards. However, I think, the difference with DAYS is that there are so many Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, and fluid characters that if you don't like one of them, there are others to choose from. I can't think of many other TV shows where that is the fact. While it can be alienating that a gay headwriter does not seem sensitive to the concerns of gay fans, we should always remember that all of this is being written by middle-aged men trying to guess what appeals to 18-34 year-old women. The target audience may not share our priorities, and is assumed to appreciate this type of humor. (and don't try to tell me that this on streaming and the demographic doesn't matter, because Peacock is still trying to sell ads to companies that embrace the demo, as evidenced by their quarterly report) Lately, anytime a soap seems too juvenile or superficial, I try to remind myself, this was not produced with me in mind as a consumer, and I find peace in that reality.

NBC Daytime
I should probably be less obtuse if I expect a straight answer. To me, there are very few eras of DAYS that seems like it would appeal to a fan of AW. Even before the ABC soaps were established as existing in the same fictional universe, they were marketed toward an identifiable audience. Similarly, although the P&G and Bell soaps differed in style, it was easy to understand how a 1983 Y&R fan who watched the introduction of teen model Cricket might enjoy that period of GL's four musketeers. However, aside from times when AW was forced to shoehorn in more action orientated plots, it seems like there was very little carryover for a DAYS fan to enjoy at contemporaneous eras of AW. For example, does a 1985 fan watching The Dragon action/romance plot with Kim and Shane, also enjoy the mysterious character-driven origins of the Donna Love's twins plot line? Or in 1978 when DAYS Mike is melodramatically marrying a dying Margo does that same demographic want to watch the mature repartee of Iris and Brian? It just doesn't feel like there was anything characteristic of those two NBC soaps that would attract a devoted fandom to the entire lineup.

@AbcNbc247 Has Kate told Roman that she knows Phillip is alive? Because I feel like I missed any reaction of him to knowing that Brady was framed for a crime? That seems like something that Roman would not easily forgive. Or maybe he gave some mush mouth reply that I misunderstood? Didn't Lucas say something about it when they told him that Kate was dead? I recall Lucas went on a rant about the current circumstances of all of Kate's children. @carolineg

GH: Former OLTL'er Reprising Role!
According to the July ratings report, at least 90% of the GH audience is over 50 years old. So, marketing the nostalgia of seeing characters from cancelled soaps makes sense. Personally, I'm just happy to see the actress be in so much demand.

DAYS Promo "A National Treasure"
I'm sure you understand my point that treating the complexities of aging as a heart-warming saga, whether due to trauma or dementia, lacks sensitivity. Telling a story that focuses on how strangers are necessary to assist this sweet old man against the backdrop of a health care system that is chronically inadequate for elderly patients feels patronizing to me.

I don't think so Mia was part of the baby switch with Nicole, she lived in the Horton House during the time that Maggie considered making it into a shelter for pregnant women, and Chad was her boyfriend... I confuse Melanie and Chelsea, but I re-read Mia's bio prior to posting

Days: August 2023 Discussion Thread
I was just pondering that this would be the perfect time for Mia to return (perhaps as a recast). I know the character was not that popular, but think about her connection to recent events. Maggie needs her support now that Victor is dead. Nicole is pregnant, which was a vital part of Mia's origin story. Chad is single, so she could be a hindrance in his relationship with Stephanie. Plus, nobody has been to the Horton House where she lived for months, so she could visit there. Extra credit if Mia became an OB-Gyn in her time away, since half of Salem is expecting and Kayla feels a little overwhelmed. I'm just saying, given that Victor's death has motivated the return of many characters from her generation, it is remarkable how many ties to the canvas Mia has maintained.

DAYS: Former Actor Returning!
I don't think there's anything wrong in commenting that she looks different. Times and fashion have changed. So, she's lightened her hair and softened her makeup. There will inevitably be some dialogue explaining who she is, because she is not as instantly recognizable as someone like Theresa. Cut to Kate, "Oh look it is my granddaughter Chelsea, we once fought over the same guy, she was named Georgia, but then..." However, making accusations about plastic surgery and drug use seem a bit out of line. I get Chelsea and Melanie's origin stories confused, so I thought maybe she would be tied into Dimitri's plot line, but I guess that would make more sense for Melanie, since he is stealing her inheritance.

I didn't have lunch early enough to watch the spoiled episode, so it was just a normal Monday on my laptop. Does the costume department not know that they're filming six months in advance? Why are all the men wearing leather jackets in August? Also, is there anything soap-ier than Belle and Brady taking time out of discussing their immediate concerns in order to have a little exposition dump about Phillip? I also enjoy that in the DOOL universe, nobody ever talks off-screen or texts, they only have face-to-face conversations if they happen to run into each other in the center of town. I guess since Kate was kidnapped by Dimitri she can help with gutting the fish at the Pub. However, she was once a marketing success at Countess Wilhelmina. Can't she write a PR plan for Roman's chowder? Has love cost Kate all sense of purpose and avarice? Finally, how is Shawn supposed to get sober when most of the businesses in Salem are bars?

LATEST RATINGS: August 14-18, 2023
No demographic data this week? Has anyone noticed if the prolonged hiatus for The Talk has had any effect on CBS's ratings? I mean, at this point, they haven't aired a new episode for almost four months!

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Can someone help me with more information on James Noseworthy the actor credited with playing Jamey Swift as a baby? On the EON homepage and IMDB they credit Noseworthy with playing Jamey as toddler and then Jason Zimbler played him as child when he returned with Logan. Zimbler went on to be a child actor and appeared in Clarissa Explains It All. I had assumed that James Noseworthy was the same person as Jack Noseworthy, the actor who appeared in the MTV show Dead at 21, and in U-571. However, Jack Noseworthy did a Reddit AMA and noted that his first job on TV was after he graduated from Boston Conservatory. I chose my avatar because after I was assigned the screen name J Swift, I looked for an image of what the ginger headed kid would look like as an adult. Both Jack Noseworthy and Jason Zimbler had red hair, so I assumed Jack played the part as a baby. Now, maybe James Noseworthy was just a baby living in Manhattan whose family put on TV, and then never pursued further work in the industry. But, I would be interested to know if anyone has any further details. Young Jack Noseworthy/ and young Jason ZImbler for context

While we await confirmation of Arleen's passing, could someone with comic book knowledge clarify the timeline of the Harley Quinn story for me? Did she inspire the creation of the character? Or, did the character pre-exist and her performance inspired her casting?

RIP: In Memoriam Thread
And yet, apparently Bob and Betty were in a feud for years (someone call Ryan Murphy) Among a herd of celebrities, including former game-show host Bob Barker and several ‘Desperate Housewives’ cast members, actress Lily Tomlin said subjecting elephants to zoo life amounts to torture. ‘Golden Girl’ Betty White also showed, but spoke in favor of building the new enclosure and dismissed claims that the lone remaining elephant at the zoo was stressed out or depressed. https://www.latimes.com/archives/blogs/la-unleashed/story/2008-11-08/another-heated-debate-over-the-l-a-zoos-elephant-enclosure Edit: source corrected - 2nd time, thanks for the clarification @DRW50 , hopefully the LA Times is a less controversial choice 😉 🤞🐘
