DAYS: March 2024 Discussion Thread
Also, I keep forgetting that Stefan shot Harris. It is kind of ironic that Steve Burton is recovering from a gunshot wound on two different networks. I guess 'wincing in pain' is the only thing he can emote? Anyhoo, it seems like they've written Stefan into a corner now that he's confessed to EJ. Also, Goldman and Clyde have no reason to defend Stefan. So, I'm interested to know how that will play out. Once again, I must raise concerns about the pacing. Why is it so challenging for DAYS to juggle Paulina's heart, the BobEtte mystery, the drug plot, and the baby switch concurrently? I'm not suggesting they all need to unfold in a single day, but surely we can manage more than one storyline per episode. These brief scenes, often spanning an entire episode for a single conversation, are to blame. Take, for instance, Sarah and Harris sharing two significant pieces of information—the pain medication and Harris's reaction to Xander's unjust accusation. It shouldn't have taken nearly the entire hour to convey just those two points.

The Media/Journalism Thread
It is a weird career move from political website The Messenger to Us Weekly. I had to double-check that it was not US News and World Report. But, I guess everyone needs a job. https://www.thedailybeast.com/dan-wakeford-editor-in-chief-of-doomed-news-outlet-the-messenger-lands-at-us-weekly In fact, he seems more suited for print media focused on the lives of reality stars, than a centrist source for political news which may have been part of the problem at his prior gig. "The press release from the entertainment mag’s parent company notably made no mention of Wakeford’s most recent gig at the doomed media startup. Instead, A360media’s announcement focused on Wakeford’s “20 years of experience in the media industry” and “proven track record of success,” including his time as editor-in-chief of People, entertainment director of Entertainment Weekly, and head editor at In Touch Weekly. I wonder if there were also political sensitivities at play. Although prior scenes were set in Egypt. At the time of the hijacking, Egyptian President Mubarak demanded an apology from President Reagan for intercepting a civilian airlines flight in order to capture the hijackers. There was a subsequent travel ban to Egypt for Americans. So, even in the fictional universe it would've questionable for citizens of Bay City to go to Egypt. And, I would hazard to guess that they didn't want audiences to associate Carl Hutchins with terrorism. Which is not unreasonable. Because even if they never planned for Carl to return, the stench of terrorism, versus a fictional plot to poison people with dust, would've been very distasteful.

DAYS: March 2024 Spoilers
I'm happy this is a thing, because it felt like a loose thread that they would face no consequences for gassing a guard and helping a convict escape. Also, there was a lot of hype around the story of young Alice and Tom, but from the spoilers it looks like they aren't appearing again anytime soon…

3.8/10 While I appreciate Holly's conflict as necessary to maintain the story, it doesn't feel organic because Holly's feelings toward Nicole before her coma were not congruent with her desire to protect her Mom. The Lexi stuff is odd, I'll leave it at that. I'm not offended by the choices made, but I could think of dozens of other characters who could've fulfilled the same roll, and would have been willing to appear on-screen. I agree with @AbcNbc247, that I thought the sign language trick was clever. It was a little late, but still clever. I also like that Steve makes no bones about his dislike of Ava. Like, there's not going to be one of those scenes where Ava hugs Steve and then Kayla walks in and gets p@#$% off, because he is almost disgusted by her.- Dallas Discussion Thread
Delighted to help, and I hope that scratched your itch. Or as they say in Latin, spero impingebat scabiem tuam.- Primetime Soaps
Fantasy Island is the first show that comes to mind, maybe because of its similarity in structure to Hotel. I haven't seen the film or the reboot based on the series, but I understand that they both contain soapier elements about the motives of Mr. Rourke. I think LA Law is the Bochco show that leans the most soapy. The love affairs of Susan Day and Harry Hamlin's characters, as well as Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, provided an ongoing serialized drama that I always enjoyed along with the case of the week. I was riveted by their post LA Uprising season. However, I always make the pitch that serialized stories alone don't define a soap. Which is why I would never consider A Different World or Friends to be soaps, even though there were cliffhangers. I think you need melodrama, heightened emotional acting, and long term story arcs to define a show as a soap opera.- GH: Classic Thread
When Brad Maule initially assumed the role of Tony, Soap Opera Digest featured two stories about the production's inclination to dismiss him, contemplating either eliminating the character or recasting it. This inclination is understandable, given that Tony's backstory, as well as his later affair with Carly, demands an actor who exudes sexual allure, a trait not particularly prominent in Mr. Maule's repertoire. Evidently, the character evolved over time to align more closely with the actor's strengths. However, one can't help but speculate whether a more roguish Tony would have prolonged Rita's presence on the show. With Frisco's departure and the subsequent shift in creative direction under Monty, Rita's exit became almost inevitable. Yet, Rita possessed significant potential, and the intriguing sibling rivalry between Frisco and Tony seemed to fade into obscurity.- Dallas Discussion Thread
That's what I meant when I referenced it as a four quadrant show…- Dallas Discussion Thread
The pairing of Dukes of Hazard and Dallas always seemed weird to me, but perhaps some of its success was due to the fact that it was marketed as a four quadrant show, not just a soap opera for women.- Generations Discussion Thread
@dc11786 I am fascinated by your collection of soap opera bibles. Do they read like a novel? Are the formats similar from show to show and writer to writer? And do you know what stage of development they were written in (are there after network notes revisions)? And do you have them in paper or digital form? I would encourage you to scan it, just for posterity, not for sharing. Are they copywrite protected?- DAYS: March 2024 Discussion Thread

I would hazard to guess that they needed a medical professional for the Dawn storyline, and it was just kismet that Jamie was proposed to return. However, I'd never trust a doctor who was dumb enough to get into a 'who's the daddy' plot.- GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
I'd bet Errol and/or Toups could get the job done BTW, a thread on the most memorable exit interviews of all time would be fun. Melanie Smith's (Emily Stewart) exit interview from ATWT was a masterpiece for the genre (I've never looked at Greg Beecroft the same). And Edie Lehmann's (GH Katherine Delafield) made me wish her character had as much spunk as she did.- GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Yes, although Pam Long's fiancé's exit interview with SOD was pretty juicy, so I wish it would happen more often. With only four soaps, there's not much to lose by spilling the beans on their ex-employer. And, California outlawed NDA's for fired employees.- Another World Discussion Thread

Pardon me for not reading all 43 pages of this thread, but have they done an exit interview? I don't know which outlet would do it, but I'd like to know their 'Jason returns' pitch and their perspective on the timeline of their dismissal.
