  1. ^ It was always out there, but I always expect them to be idiots and they aren't. Ben Carson is the most famous recent example. I just don't get it.
  2. I find myself thinking this fairly frequently. I grew up admiring people in academia and there weren't any nut jobs at my undergrad college, but there are some nuts out there, often at bigger schools where they can fly under the radar. It took me too long to realize people can be book smart and still totally off the rails.
  3. Yep. Completely disgusting.
  4. I find the shooting of an elected official disturbing under (almost) all circumstances. I agree this won't help gun control though. I feel it's lost cause for at least a decade. If little kids getting gunned down at school didn't change hearts and minds this won't either.
  5. He doesn't look well at all. CNN just had a clip of him being interviewed by a gaggle of reporters and he looks ill and a bit disoriented. I hope nothing happens to him. He's not perfect, but at least he wants an investigation. We need Republicans who are behind this effort. I just looked up his age. I had no idea he's already 80 years old. Ugh.
  6. Looks like Trump's foundation might have used a children's hospital charity to launder funds. http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/336564-trump-foundation-funneled-100k-in-donation-into-revenue-for-trump?rnd=1496776145 How is this man our president? It's been months and I still feel like I'm in the matrix. Didn't she actually say something like "I'm not in favor of a living wage?" How do you vote for someone who says that?
  7. ^ My deepest apologies.
  8. But he's sooo awful. I'm sure I would have had my price when I was younger and poor AF, but I was too naive to realize the power of that 18-28 range when I was in it. I'd say it's better to social climb with a guy who's much older, but just a decent upper middle class guy. If I were married to someone like Trump I'd always be wondering how good the CSI team in my city really is and I'd be in an orange jumpsuit soon enough.
  9. I don't think I could do it once even for a billion dollars.
  10. Plus Hillary isn't in public office. Trump is. When people bring up HRC now it's just a deflection. Nothing she did or may have done justifies anything the President has done.
  11. The Kathy Griffin thing was pretty disturbing to me. It's also hard for me to put in context because I hate Trump so much. I think if someone had done the same thing to one of our other presidents I would be even more disgusted with them. I know Ted Nugent made terrible comments about President Obama, but talking about it seems different than doing a photo shoot with a mock severed head. WTF was she thinking? Also, TN is another person I wrote off as a crackpot ages ago. I will say its ridiculous that Trump has invited him to the white house after he made threats against the last President. @MissLlanviewPAI think this thread needs optimistic voices. I can't really be one of them, but none of us know what's coming. Maybe this horror show will feel like nothing but a bad dream 10 years from now.
  12. I've disliked Bill Maher, since he thought it was cool to defend that teacher who raped (and got pregnant by) her 12 year old student because "boys are different". Then he took such obvious glory in saying that women didn't care how many little kids were left without arms as long as they got their diamonds. By the time he got around to denigrating Muslims, I had written him off, but this latest event comes as no surprise.
  13. If true I wouldn't mind at all. They have a billion people so if they stick to this agreement it would be a great thing for the world. Pretty sure they have a long history of cheating these types of deals though. Also, it's obviously shameful that the US isn't doing it's part. I don't really care that we are leading the charge in these matters, I do care that we at least follow when others try to save the world as we know it. This is why I don't take a lot of comfort in the possibility that this presidency is some final push back of conservative whites. So much damage can be done, before our government is back in safe hands.
  14. ^ I feel bad for anyone who truly loves this country and dies during Trump's presidency. I would be devastated to leave this earth knowing our precious republic is in this moron's hands.
  15. Plus, our very own election should have taught us how unpredictable societies can be. If you reread this thread in the days leading up to the election (which I cannot bring myself to do, we were so hopeful), you see that only you and Q thought Trump stood a real chance. That makes me doubt that any of us know what to expect from the Germans or anyone else in the years to come. I'll hope for the best, but Merkel won't be in charge forever. Once the nuclear cat is out of the bag it's out, no matter who is leading Germany or Europe. Who among us thought we'd have to worry about someone as unstable as Trump having the US codes even two years ago?
  16. This is an interesting thread. There are about 8 tweets in it. Basically that Germany can't hold the line against Russia without the US and all of this might result in a Euro nukes program. Seems like Trump's legacy could be the spread of nukes from Europe to Japan. Pax Americana was nice while it lasted.
  17. ^ What disturbs me is how many people don't regret it, including people he is harming through his policies. The last poll I've seen didn't have high numbers of Trump voters who would do things differently if given a chance. I guess it's still early days and they may come to their senses. This is a couple of months ago. 3% https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/monkey-cage/wp/2017/03/22/how-many-trump-voters-really-regret-their-votes/?utm_term=.1b41a9b817e9
  18. I thank God for the iphone. I guess I just had my head in my ass, but I had no idea how awful some people are until I had the video proof. At the same time there are nearly 350 million people in the country, so I try to remind myself that it's still a small sample. It's like how everyday there is a story on Yahoo about a toddler who has been killed by her parents or caregiver. It makes me a little paranoid, but in a country this big awful things are going to happen regularly, but it's still not the norm. Not yet.
  19. That's the thing. I'm happy to interact with economic conservatives. I think they have some good points. We really cannot run huge deficits forever, for example. However when people come into the thread with an "in your face" attitude they are only here to get a reaction, not to interact. That said, the responses they elicited were pretty spot on.
  20. Hell, yes. I can't bang my head against troll bridges at this stage of my life. It's block and forget for me.
  21. Truth. I have to laugh at this nonsense. The alternative is too grim.
  22. I think that depends on how you define powerful. I'd agree she's more powerful on a personal level. The thing I find absolutely terrifying about Trump is the sheer amount of military power he has at his disposal. It's like having a two year old in a room with a button that could destroy the world. Trump has the might of the world's largest military at his fingertips, but he clearly doesn't have the intellect that should go with that kind of power. I used to think that we could at least count on Congress to intervene if he tried to do something really crazy, but that was just fantasy. If we get rid of this bastard without some sort of large scale military atrocity occurring it will be a miracle.
  23. I knew this trip would be one gaffe after the next, although I expected it to be even worse tbh.
  24. ^ Our leader is a complete dolt.
