I hear you. I feel bad asking it, but it's a crucial question at the moment. We saw that he was having problems in that one Senate hearing.

So if they do trot John McCain out for this healthcare bill do they have the votes? I don't wish the man any ill, but do we even know that he's competent?

Which is why I think it's entirely possible that these scoundrels are going to get away with all of these ethics violations. I want to believe Mueller will bring them down, but I won't until I see it. I'd seeing tweets about Trump having the power to pardon himself. I wish he had to specify exactly what the pardon is for.

I thought this article on cancer was interesting. I've seen similar sentiments expressed about the constant call for women to "battle" breast cancer. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/07/acceptance/534348/?utm_source=atltw The Republicans are trying to cut SNAP (no surprise). Another day another terrible plan to hurt the poor. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/bb/hunger-persistent-problem-poor-americans-republicans-mull-snap-cuts

I guess I'm having an anxiety ridden day because this also scares me. He encourages the white nationalists every single chance he gets. I keep catching myself falling into the idea that thing are as bad as they can, but it's not true. Most of the economic ideas he has will squeeze the lower middle class and fuel resentment towards the poor and non whites even more. It's like this evil, vicious cycle.

^ They clearly don't know what they are doing and I'm not sure if I should be grateful or terrified. I'm leaning toward terrified.

Every time I think their plans to screw up healthcare is dead, some remnant of it rises from the ashes.

I feel incredibly grateful that the Republicans can't manage to get it together. Plenty of damage has been done to our society just by electing Trump, but it could be much worse if the Republicans learn how to work together and compromise within their own party. Luckily they have a branch of zealots among them who won't give an inch.

Nothing I can think of. The less he does the better. I'm with Ana Navarro. The more time he spends on the golf course the safer I feel.

The weak deflection drives me nuts because so many people fall for it. The Clintons are like live bait to the Fox crowd. When they say "Hillary did XYZ" I just want to say, but aren't your candidates supposed to be better? How do the actions of someone you claim is so awful justify anything a Republican does. I wish they would just give it a rest.

What the hell is wrong with people? Why pull people over just to harass them, when there are plenty of dangerous people on the road that do need to be pulled over. Obviously they did it because she's black, but I just do not understand the mentality. I hope they face some sort of consequences for this other than internet shaming. At the same time there is video proof of several murders the police have committed and they keep getting away with that, so I'm not holding my breath.

Not a problem! The GOP is just going to ban birth control, abortion and travel, so that most women have 5+ children during their reproductive years (whether they want to or not).

I think it's starting to break through to the public at large. I have a friend from high school. She never really left our hellish little area (Fulton County, NY) except to go to college. She's incredibly intelligent, but avoided news and politics our whole lives (because there's nothing we can do about it, but she does vote dem). Just this week she actually talked deeply about politics for the first time. She knew Trump was a narcissist, couldn't believe so many people were stupid enough to vote him in and knew about Russia. This makes me think that the truth is permeating our society. Slower than we might like, but I believe it's finally happening.

WHAT!? Hasn't she ever seen a globe? That's the kind of thing you expect from a "church school" kid from the hinterlands.

I agree up to a point, but intellectual ability plays a part. Also during the summer one year I worked as grocery checker. Might feet hurt so badly after, I was just grateful to rest after work and I was 19. I wasn't in stellar shape, but not terrible either, I can't imagine what it's like to do that kind of job in middle age, while having family responsibilities as well. Never mind something like working on a road crew or construction. I'm a little surprised that so many people didn't recognize the DI because you hear it on TV and the movies a fair amount. I'm not surprised that there are so many uninformed or easily manipulated people out there though. OMG.

They probably don't in most cases. Never underestimate how uneducated the American public is. Personally I find that comforting from a certain perspective. We would certainly all be better off if we had a more educated population. However, when I see some of the ignorance coming out of people's mouths, I'm glad to know there is (often) a reason for it other than people are awful. Also, you learned the DI in elementary school it was probably reinforced many times in your life, both in college and your own reading. Only 25% (or so) of our population graduates college. There is still a sizable amount that doesn't even graduate high school. A lot of these people don't have the time or ability to do extensive reading when they get home from physically demanding jobs. Now I'm off on a tangent, but one of the things I'm most grateful of is the time for intellectual pursuits. It's a luxury not that many people have.

This post hit my black humor funny bone. I'm going to read up more today on the North Korea situation. I imagine they have a small bomb that would hit California, so most of us would survive (cancer rates would obviously go way up), but it would kill millions and screw the world economy. Then we absolutely would hit back with our full force and kill even more millions. That would probably happen no matter who is in charge, but given 45 and the Republicans are, I wouldn't expect any mercy. China would stand by and see at least one problem solved, if not two (Can't believe their would be many refugees after Trump is done). Not because I think they really want to see the world economy tank, but if it does they might emerge as the world's economic power in the long term. From what I've read China is much better at taking the long view then we are.

Now that was a depressing story, especially the part about how TMZ is allowing Trump to reach a younger more diverse audience and patch together a broader coalition. I'm going to hope his awful approval ratings counter this story.

Couldn't agree more. I wasn't trying to imply that I thought China would bring NK to heel, just that they are probably the only ones that have the power. I can't see a lot of reasons they would help us. Not unless they have their own reasons for wanting to forestall a confrontation. The really bad part of this, imo, is that we might have hoped for a judicious response if an attack happened under President Obama. I shudder to think what will happen now.
