  1. ^ The courts have really been saving the day. I dread all he appointments Trump gets to make.
  2. I find it really sad. Just the whole cycle of poverty and lack of education. So brainwashed by religion they don't even think healthcare is a right they should have.
  3. ^ Is she really that delusional or is she just playing to the people who are dumb enough to believe this stuff? I truly can't tell. Meanwhile Obama was involved in the DNC race. I'm grateful he's sticking around, but I can hardly believe it. I thought for sure he would want to get away from politics. http://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/3/13/14750528/barack-obama-trump-post-presidency
  4. ^ Meanwhile we've been keeping our society going "with other people's babies" this whole time. American born women do not want to have enough babies to keep the population growing. That goes even for families that are second and third generation immigrants. He calls himself a Republican, but he's still too stupid to realize you can't have a capitalist society with negative population growth. That's obviously it's own problem when it comes to the environment and climate change, but both Japan and parts of Europe are examples of what happens to your economy when you don't have enough babies. Not to sound cold hearted, but children are a precious commodity and we should be scooping up those Central American and Syrian kids with both hands.
  5. The Obamas were in Omaha today, meeting with Buffet. I wonder what he's fundraising for. Whatever it is I hope he got what he came for.
  6. They don't care enough about anyone who isn't them to change their political ideology. Hell, his female voters don't even care about the people who are them. I don't deny that at all. It's absolutely surreal how many white supremacist got close to the ultimate seat of power with this election. The reason I think it makes a difference is that it leaves more hope for the future. If we truly had 40 million rabid racist/sexists on our hands we would be well and truly f*cked for the foreseeable future.
  7. I still believe that. Just because he inspired and attracted white supremacist does not mean everyone who voted for him is a white supremacist or sexist. There are a hell of a lot of people who are ideologically opposed to the democratic platform no matter what. If you say that they were willing to overlook these dangerous elements because they cared more about other issues then I'll agree with you there.
  8. Very true. I think the attorney I was working for was just very much about individual responsibility and choice. I probably shouldn't let her POV color my whole perspective, but it was a very small office, so it kind of did.
  9. Me too. It's really the best case scenario, but it's a terrible way to run a country. If only Hillary had won I think the ACA would have been entrenched too deeply to be undone. Then it could have been fixed instead of the uncertainly that's about to come our way. I think we can realistically hope that the bill as it stands won't pass, but if it does I feel really bad for people approaching old age who don't have employer health care.
  10. @JaneAusten Well, I think we've talked before about how the working poor tend to hate the non working poor, but think the rich are wonderful and to be admired. That mindset is deeply ingrained in our culture. I was reading Hillbilly Elegy the other day. Kind of an interesting read, but midway through the author goes poor white person's Bill Cosby and starts talking about how awful food stamp recipients with cell phones are. How much he resented them when he was a checker and couldn't afford the steaks they were buying. He just goes on and on about all the bad choices poor people make because that's the problem and not the gross income inequity in this country. It reminds me of when I was interning at the ACLU during grad school and expressed some sympathy for some of the downtown prostitutes who were being rounded up and my boss told me they made choices. That always stuck with me as an asinine comment because I'm pretty sure she and I never actually chose not to be prostitutes. I know people think the ACLU is our salvation right now, and maybe they are, but I've never been their biggest fan since working there.
  11. I'm steeling myself for chaos in the area of healthcare. It seems to me that it will take the Republicans a couple of years to do whatever terrible thing they are going to do. With any luck Trump won't be reelected and the Democrats will come along and undo it. It's going to be years of people knocking down other people's sand castles, while most of the American people are screwed in such an important aspect of life.
  12. ^ Pretty much. Just a fluff piece.
  13. I mentioned it a few days ago, but yes, this is beyond an ugly thing to do to people. The people who came up with this should be ashamed of themselves. Of course they will act surprised when the reports of physical and sexual abuse of little ones come rolling in.
  14. It's not shocking, I just find it pretty disappointing in many instances. Eugene was definitely one of them. I remember when I couldn't wait to talk about each episode, but I don't really feel that way anymore. But hey, I still watch.
  15. Yes, I do think it's deflection. The sad thing is some people will believe it.
  16. I have a couple of acquaintances with family that are pro Trump. It's causing a major rift. What some people don't get is that this isn't a difference of opinion about economics that people can just get over. It's some people basically telling other people they don't have a right to exist in this country. How do you just get over that? DHS considering separating mothers and children at the boarder. This is so disgusting to me. Don't these people remember what it's like to be a child and how devastating it can be to be separated from your mother? If this happens you just know that the reports of child abuse will be rolling in a few months later. http://thehill.com/latino/322246-dhs-considering-separating-families-at-border-report
  17. I keep seeing people talk about how much empathy and compassion Trump showed tonight. I'll confess I couldn't watch, but I'll never believe he posses those traits. Not after everything we've seen from him. Maybe he can fake it for a few mins, so can many psychopaths.
  18. Truly, I can't keep up. It seems like it changes constantly. I was just reading a NYT article about how ICE feels like the handcuffs are off and they can deport anyone they want now.
  19. I read this article a few hours ago, but since then things have changed and we aren't deporting everyone. Try to keep up. Kidding. Seriously though, I feel like things are so unstable. He floats one idea, the press covers it, but before the ink is dry he's changed his mind. It's insane.
  20. That's pretty sad. I lived so close to Plant City when I lived in Florida. I used to love buying flats of strawberries from roadside markets. Its just sad to think of all those parents and children living in fear. I see Trump is going to propose some kind of immigration compromise, so we'll see how horrible it is. I guess it can't be worse than mass round ups.
  21. I saw that Alan Dershowitz accused Keith Ellison of antisemitism, but I'll be honest, I couldn't figure out if it was true or a smear. I think AD has an interesting mind, but I don't entirely trust him.
  22. Same. For the most part I don't care what they think. I suppose I side eye the few that are Trump supporters. I certainly think celebrities have the same right to express their views as anyone, but I'm pretty turned off by celebrity culture overall. Fame and talent has allowed some people to get away with far too much for me not to be sickened by it on some level.
  23. I agree Trump doesn't care. I think it's Bannon who cares about people being the right kind of white. Like I've said if you really look at the Syrian refugees a lot of them are white (some with light hair and eyes even), but they aren't Christian, so this administration doesn't care if they die. I also agree with @rhinohide that we can't just hope the Trump administrations total failure will automatically result in a resurgence for the Democrats. It's tempting, but I think it's critical to have a great candidate and solid ideas.
  24. I've tried and in some ways I do, but when I see people getting shot like that guy in Kansas it gets harder and harder.
  25. Me too. It's going to be really frustrating if the Democrats can't get it together for the next couple of election cycles.
