Charita's last appearance was 40 years ago this month: December 1984. It's hard to believe it's been that long. I still remember coming home one night in February 1985 and my mom telling me that Charita had passed away. I enjoyed Island Boy and was disappointed that they didn't do more with his character. It was similar to the character of Michael Burke. Two promising characters that Brown and Esensten wasted.

Claire did not create the character of Noah Chase. Noah first appeared in March 2000. Claire started as head writer in early June, though her material didn't start airing until August.

I'm pretty sure Reva's walk after dumping Kyle was taped in New Vernon, NJ, not Peapack. New Vernon is about 12 miles away from Peapack. I believe that the church Guiding Light used for Reva's scenes was later used by One Life to Live for the conclusion of the homophobia storyline. I just drove through that area on my way back from the Catskills a few weeks ago and it's absolutely stunning.

According to Tom Lisanti's book, it was in 1977 when ABC approached Labine and Mayer about expanding RH to an hour. It was shortly after AMC expanded to an hour. ABC proposed expanding RH to an hour and giving it a better timeslot. I assume RH would have aired in the 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. timeslot. I guess this was around the time that ABC was considering canceling GH. Had Labine and Mayer accepted ABC's offer, I wonder what would have aired in the 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. timeslot.

After the summer of 1982 with the terrible Republic of Eden storyline, I absolutely loved the Nora Fulton murder mystery. It was classic Edge. And it was relatively short. Nora was strangled in early January and the killer was revealed four months later.

I agree with j swift that Sheldon didn't change the characters that much, though I did have issues with the way Sheldon wrote Miles in the summer of 1983. I remember being surprised at how quickly Miles ended up in bed with Chris. It seemed very out of character to me for Miles to hook up with Chris so soon after Nicole's death.

The episode Carl posted is actually Lee Sheldon's first credited episode. The reveal of Nora's murderer happened on Slesar's last episode on May 20, 1983. Sheldon took care of the dangling plot threads during his first few episodes and immediately started setting up his own characters and stories, with Chris Egan debuting during this first week. I recall watching this episode live on WABC New York and immediately knowing something had shifted in the writing.

Peter Haskell was already portraying the role of Lloyd Kendall on Search for Tomorrow when Tom O'Rourke was fired from Guiding Light. Haskell joined Search around June 1983. An age-appropriate role on another P&G show during that time is Carl Hutchins on Another World. Another possibility is Raymond Speer on As the World Turns, a role that went to Donald May.

There were several abrupt shifts during those months. Amanda's sudden departure in August. Justin and Helena departing for Arizona in September. Hope's departure in November/December. I especially found Justin's departure head-scratching. Six years of careful plotting with the saga of Phillip's paternity was wrapped up so abruptly when Bradley (who had been on the show for only a few months) revealed the truth. And then weeks later, Justin suddenly leaves Springfield, depriving the viewers of the fallout from the revelation. I had only been watching Guiding Light for 18 months at that point, but I remember being utterly disappointed by the changes.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but in a recent thread on another site, someone said that Bernau decided not to renew his contract, which led to the creation of Alexandra. I know that the 1984 rewrite that Brandon Spaulding was still alive was very unpopular, but I do wonder how the story would have played out if Bernau had still been around as Alan.

Amanda was abruptly written out around August 1983. As Mitch said, her exit was very weird as Long and Culliton had been building up the character after their material started airing in May 1983. I think she was raising her half-brother Matthew and had hired a nanny named Jane Hogan (played by Mary Pat Gleason, another transplant from Texas). Beverlee arrived as Alex around February 1984 and Alan disappeared into the jungles of San Rios around May 1984.

Yes, there was a third serial killer. I think his name was Andrew Miller and he was pulling the plug on people on life support at the hospital. Bridget was one of his victims. That was a Tom King/Craig Carlson plot and ended around March 1996. The second serial killer storyline that year started a month later. Apparently, King and Carlson started that story and Margaret DePriest continued it.

I always thought it would have been cool if GL has cast Frank Beaty as Rick rather than bringing back O’Leary. Beaty was a powerful and charismatic actor who could have made Rick a leading man rather than the supporting character Rick was with O’Leary in the role.

Lainie Bauer was the mother of Johnny and the dreaded, short-lived Lacey. She was portrayed by Teri Keane.

I'm intrigued by what I read about the plans, especially Sara and Betty. I love that Betty's husband is a retired senator and the fact that the show is set in the D.C. area. The first thing that popped into my mind was whether we might be looking at a January 6, 2025 debut. And, if so, whether there could be a tie-in to the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

When did Rod Arrants return? I know Liza encountered a Travis lookalike in the Henderson airport in the final episode, but the character (Sam Ratcliffe) wasn't played by Rod. Did Rod return at another time?
