The only Hersheys I have heard of are Barbara Hershey and Hershey's chocolate. That other person, I have never heard of. (Shrugs) Speaking of vapid Rachel and her googley-eyed husband Sean, my favorite Real World scenes involved Sean being left looking foolish by Kameelah in the Boston firehouse. Boy, I bet even the mention of Kamala's name gives him ptsd of him getting his ass handed to him by way of a public dressing down delivered by Kameelah.

LATEST RATINGS: January 11-15, 2021
Then the Bob/Susan affair must have started with a quickness soon after, as the affair was revealed in May! I had wondered whether maybe Andy had been going to therapy for a few months, maybe gradually causing a rift between Bob and Kim but I see that the timeline was much more condensed. Thanks.

I seriously doubt tgat anyone would associate Duke with Beau-- they are two different types completely. Beau was meant to be mysterious for much of the character's run as he had a painful family dynamic while Duke was pretty much an open book. Duke was prone to making corny but endearing jokes, while Beau seemed far more intense, sometimes even showing moments of impatience with Pam. Vastly different types, imo.

P&G likely had the "juice" to keep at least, a few of their soaps on the air but we pretty much know why they failed to do so. Thinking about what storylines were airing in January 1991, hey @Soapsuds when did Andy drive drunk and hit Lien with his car by accident? Do you remember when that happened? I think it was 1991, but what month?

Soap staples you miss the most
Sorry for the double GIF of Anna Kendrick, I was trying to fix the post. Oh well. I also miss stories that had a proper beginning, middle and end. I realize that some stories got dropped with no explanation, even at the best of times but at least, on average, most of the stories presented in a year were seen through to completion, and most were reasonably satisfying when these shows were at their best.

Considering the fact Marland was co-creator of the series, it's not that difficult to see how Tyler might have ended up on Loving.

"When you lie in bed at night with Tonio, you're thinking of me". Whew! It was true too, as there had been a scene showing Sierra on her wedding night with Tonio, imagining that it was Craig that she was making love to. Sierra ran out, Craig had obviously pushed a button.

Wooh boy, that's hot! Some actors are so convincing that you have to wonder if there wasn't "something" there. Billy Ocean turned 71 yesterday and when I read that I thought of "Caribbean Queen" first, immediately followed by "Suddenly". It's crazy how indelible an impression some of these characters, music and storylines can make on someone.

Two things that I will never understand why Soapclassics didn't do: Release a boxed set of wedding ceremonies of some of the other characters-- At least one of Lisa's weddings should have made the cut and Shannon and Brian's zany botched ceremony should've been in there. Tom and Margo's most poignant moments. The faux affair between Tom and Barbara as well as those excruciating moments of near reconciliation , including the ONS when they were on the verge of divorce as well as an ultimate reconciliation. Okay a third, is Kim's Labor Day delivery of baby Chris. Any self-respecting fan of ATWT would want to see those episode, either for the first or second time. Why these episodes never became part of a collection, I'll never know.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Part of it could be a function of age, changing times, tastes, etc. Being too deeply ensconced in the world of television, rather than out in the world observing and experiencing people from other cultures. Another part of it could come down to the writer's room and those writers not being as strong in their abilities to have a discernible impact. Writers who are confident in their craft tend to speak up. The culture surrounding P&G soaps vs. other soaps. I made the reference to the Korean aviation industry because there was a known pathology that was causing the industry to have an obscene amount of crashes in the 80s until they did the unthinkable, broke longstanding tradition in order to fix it. Marland wrote many wonderful stories at ATWT, even the ones that didn't go all the way through to reach their full conclusions. The story he began about the wounds in the Franklin family-- the rift between Roy and his father due to Roy's choice of profession being linked to the police, who his brother died at the hands of, is the type of story soaps today are not even brave enough to tell now. For his faults, I will always applaud his efforts, in pulling off even half of it. And soap production moves so fast that perhaps Marland needed a team he could speak short-hand with, and they'd "get it" and take the ball and run with it, with not much oversight.

I was thinking about what I wrote yesterday and I think that this was an industry-wide problem, not just a Marland problem. Soaps relied too much on one HW figure to write an enormous canvas full of characters and I doubt that staff writers had enough backing from the production company and network execs to truly offer a "corrective" vision that may contrast with the showrunner's projections for the characters. Did anyone read that book "The Checklist"? There is an illuminating chapter on the Korean aviation industry in the 1980s that has an interesting correlation (albeit not nearly as life and death with the soaps) to the way the daytime soaps industry operates. You simply cannot expect a middle aged white man to successfully write a full, rich interior life of a neurotic middle-class girl without some help. Writers, like everyone else have blindspots. Bill Bell and Agnes Nixon had them also. And unlike them, Marland was not the creator, so it should have been easier for the producers, execs and network to intervene, but their ranks lacked diversity and likely would have made things even worse. The problems that ATWT had were numerous, systemic and not limited to one or two regimes. As we see now, in the remaining soaps the problems remain and certainly outlived Marland, Bell and Nixon. That promo set at Dreams' End is really good. The P&G soaps were adept at filming these exterior sequences for their stories.

Y&R January 2021 Discussion Thread
Agreed. Honestly, tptb could have put her character within striking distance of any character in/near her age group that she was not related to and it would've worked. The actress is bubbly, charming, beautiful and talented. There were so many possibilities if only TIIC would have made a serious attempt. I thought it was stupid that they let Lamon Archey go, the situation with Lott is even worse.

It is too bad that CNN wasn't this quick off the mark when Trump kicked off his campaign of lies in 2015.

This conciliatory tone from some Democrats will only work if they are being ruthless in executing the Democrats' agenda behind the scenes and having a "it's nothing personal" attitude in public. Elections have consequences. The Republicans don't get to set the agenda after gaslighting the country for four years. Or, at least they shouldn't. Seth Meyers does a fairly good job of crystallizing what has been going on within the last 24 hours, as well as a recap of the situation that we are all in, in this video.

The verbal smackdowns that would take place in a public place, like an elegant powder room or staid event, where well-groomed and coiffured characters would try to keep a thin veneer of decorum when you know they wanted to take the gloves off and go after each other. The "Ladies Who Lunch" who hurled quiet insults at each other, through pursed lips, all with a smile on their faces were usually quite a hoot!

I do remember reading this interview, somewhere. It might be nice to have her on a livestream with some of her colleagues, like Hayley Barr and Karina Arroyave to discuss their time on the show.

I think that was a common device on serial dramas, especially soaps to have a character become so deeply unlikeable, that when they are sent off the canvas, they won't be missed. It's kind of unfortunate because the character could have evolved. I don't know what the reasons were behind the actress's/character's departure but between her and Tess' eventual departure and, it doesn't look like much was done with Bianca, that age group of young women seemed like it diminished rather quickly.

So I guess that was the Marcy before the blonde one, who got married to Linc? Funny how some names get repeated- I almost said the "first Marcy", but to me, that would be Marcy Thompson who was portrayed by Marisa Tomei. I'd like to see more scenes between Susan and Lyla. I was on and off with my viewing of this show at this time and no doubt missed conversations between the two about being in a relationship with a younger man. Lyla's relationship with Cal does not seem to be of the kind that has permanent possibilities. I wonder whether it was always intended to be for a finite period of time. I really hope someone can do a vlog or livestream interview with Parker Posey about her time on ATWT this year. Any interview with her that I have seen or read has never been boring. I am going to say something that might be shocking and many will, no doubt disagree but, I don't hate Courtney. Is she overwrought, melodramatic and whiny? Yes, but she was deeply insecure and had the character stayed on the canvas a bit longer, she would have matured to the point where she could've played a more useful role especially seeing as Andy never married or had a solid relationship after she left, which imo, diminished his prospects for longevity on the canvas. Lily and Roseanna found a place on the canvas, I think with more work, Courtney could have too.

I miss those continuous tracking shots that As The World Turns used to do during big group scenes like at The Mona Lisa or at a wedding. Usually, shot in one continuous take. No other soap did it that way, from what I've seen. That requires expert camera technique.

New White House, who 'dis? Seriously, that Inauguration ceremony was truly so well done. I am relieved that it went off with virtually no hitches. So many captivating moments.
