When one character ruins a storyline
Sure. I never understood many of the choices they made with Silver, like killing her off just after making her a schemer, one who could have been a part of Erica's stories for years.

When one character ruins a storyline
I know you can't really blame one character, or one actor, for tanking a whole story devised by many hands, but there are times when I'm very tempted. My main case of this would be with the 1840 story on Dark Shadows, which, in its early months, was, other than the usual generic figures of Barnabas and Julia, full of very jagged, complex characters, throwing venom at each other but also still having their moments of sympathy and heart. The triangle between back-from-the-dead Quentin, embittered wife Samantha, and her new man/his old friend, Gerard Stiles (then a fake psychic, on his way to being taken over by a malevolent force) was extremely dramatic and very entertaining to watch, especially with the other side characters like Quentin's nasty brother Gabriel and his scheming wife Edith, ditzy Flora, Gerard's partner-in-con Leticia Faye, inventor Desmond, and last but never least, Angelique, returning to Collinsport after hearing her "beloved" husband had returned. And then we get...Daphne. Kate Jackson would go on to have her share of primetime success, but that was never when cast in ingenue roles. And every DS part she had was pure ingenue. She had, in setting up the 1840 plot, already recreated the Beth and Quentin storyline from several years earlier, but at heart she was basically a Maggie replacement, who had been a Victoria replacement - very generic women who were there to be victimized, kidnapped, and fall hopelessly in love. This part had grown steadily duller as the show progressed (to the point where in the show's very last storyline, they all but did away with this trope - better late than never). Making matters worse, Kate and David Selby had little chemistry, so when this wan character not only took a major role on the canvas, but essentially took Samantha's place in the triangle (with Samantha appearing less and less, finally just returning to be abruptly killed off), it took me right out of the storyline. And around the same time most of the 1840 plot hit the skids, although it still had its moments.

Best/Worst Written Soap Affairs
This wasn't an affair, but if we're talking about forced default pairings (which maybe would be better off in its own thread) then Holly dating Buzz and Billy (two men she never would have gone near romantically - especially Billy) on GL has to be on the list.

I definitely got the sense from the kiss, only sprung when he had no other choice to keep Leo quiet, was meant to show he's a predatory bisexual. (unlike Leo who is predatory but good and right...just because). If they decide to keep him around he will probably be gay, just not as sympathetic as Leo because he's Ron's forever pet. Those two waxwork faces rubbing together made me think less of chemistry and more of some homophobic joke in Team America. I kept waiting for projectile vomit.

The Politics Thread
I was wondering when some Democrats would start playing this game again, because it's always been a vocal element in the party (it's just that starting in the '10s that element was slowly minimized). The '90s greatest hits tour being workshopped on the very same day that Ozempic Ron's grasping wife rolls out a Moms for Liberty ad that is a clarion call for every type of violent transphobia and homophobia out there just makes this sting even more. If they want people to feed into the grifters who spend all their time telling people to stay home rather than vote for Democrats, this is certainly one way to do it. This is the same line that many dead end Bernie sycophants took in 2019 and 2020 when they kept belittling people who ever questioned Bernie's passivity on social issues (or him going on Rogan).

Bird App Alternatives
My views on all of this are about a minute in. I despise Elon, and the untold bigotry (yes it was already there, I can't put that on him) he and his blue check system and his amplification of hate and fear through his "!!!" "concerning" replies. The problem is Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg play for the same team, even if Uncle Jack spends all his time smoking dope and telling you how hot his 19 year old girlfriend is, while Uncle Mark stares at the wall and occasionally asks you where the bathroom is. I'm fully aware that is not what Zuckerberg based his site name on, but, especially given our current climate, an app with the same name as a film about out of touch elites leading us to slow, painful deaths isn't even on the nose - it is the nose. And even as the site has made sure to tell us that they censor female nipples, I have seen no effort to stop hatemongers like libs of tiktok from joining up. Facebook radicalized so many into hate and violence - why would this site be any different? There are still a few people on Twitter I want to read, and I still feel more of a trust with the site, ludicrous as that sounds. If or when that changes, I don't know where I will go. I've heard a few of you mention Spoutible, even if I'm guessing by the time I get there only five people will be left.

Some Emmerdale Farm repeats from the '90s mention staying tuned for As the World Turns, so it must have run in the UK for a bit.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I see that @Soapsuds posted it a few years ago but I don't remember ever watching it or remembering its existence (I suppose down to this period not being a favorite for me), so thanks for sharing again. I'm glad a few more kernels from 83-84 have popped up via unusual places. P&G sure as hell won't bother. Very good quality too. Thanks. I wonder if these are Italian versions of episodes already up or new. At least we have the visuals. I miss ATWT and GL so much around this time of year. Nothing has replaced them, or come close.- Valiant Lady

@I Am A Swede Very sad to hear about Meg. I think we all knew she hadn't been doing well, as I think otherwise Pearl would have had a proper exit, but I'm sorry to hear she's gone. She was such a warm, funny actress, and even though she had many other roles (including many Victoria Wood productions), Pearl is where I knew her best. Of the wonderful trio of "oldies" Emmerdale had in Betty, Pearl and Edna, Pearl was often written as the flightiest, making the same mistakes over and over, but she had a good heart, and you always cared about her. I remember how much she resented Edna, knowing Len had only ever really loved her, and how their friendship won out anyway. I miss those types of nuanced relationships on soaps, but I know they're never coming back, and I should just be glad for what we had.- Neighbours: Discussion Thread
I wonder if there are any personal reasons she never went back. Anyway, the Neighbours Nerd account on Youtube (always worth watching) is back with a bunch of good awards-based material. A quick promo.- All My Children Tribute Thread
Everything he did on AMC was forgettable, so he's not wrong. He and his wife can keep their show. Like anything else they're involved in, I wouldn't be watching it anyway.- Dark Shadows Discussion Thread
I can't remember what she wore during the Leviathan story, but if parallel time was the first I wouldn't be surprised. Carolyn Loomis had such an extremely different style and persona to Carolyn Stoddard - the first time I saw her, when I was a kid and we bought some of the episodes on VHS that were well ahead of what was running on the Sci-Fi Channel at the time, I was startled. That contrast is one of the reasons I loved the character and was so impressed with Nancy Barrett in the role(s).- RIP: In Memoriam Thread

That death glare on Larry cracks me up. How I felt watching most of the Regis and Kathie Lee era.- GH Actor to Temp. Exit; Role Will *Not* Be Recast
I do think Nicholas Chavez is attractive (although he looked better without the extra muscle), but I'd agree he's not that irreplaceable an actor. As it's obvious the show doesn't care about his relationship with Trina, that won't matter in recasting. The main question is whether GH's casting is strong enough to make it work, and if the new actor clicks with Genie Francis as well as Chavez does.- RIP: In Memoriam Thread
