  1. Thanks for reading. I have some more, I was just taking a break for a few hours. I don't know what people thought of him. He seemed like a random hunk type to me, in the one episode I saw of 1982. It was obvious the show had no idea what to do with Pat, which, frankly, they never did, even in the 70's. That's one of the reasons I think it was untrue that recasting Pat ruined the character. There really was no character to ruin.
  2. You did it right. Great job. Thanks for telling us about this. I didn't see the story from the start, but I think one problem was they had to quickly change the backstory of Scott being Donna's son, due to Philece Sampler's age. Denise Alexander is wonderful but putting her in the role of Mary McKinnon when the only McKinnons on the show were two helpless and needy daughters never made sense to me. Why put her in that role when Kathleen (the heart of the family) and Jake were leaving, and Vince was being recast? I also hated Reginald. I don't mean love to hate, I just mean hate. He was so one-note, and he had no one to play off of, because Michael was too smug to be a hero, and Donna was so extremely weak, she could barely even walk half the time.
  3. I didn't realize November said he hates the past. That explains why the show is so hollow now. There is no sense of family, friendship, or community on Emmerdale now. That's what made Matt's relationship with the Sugdens so special. Now we have the boring Bartons.
  4. This can't be Emmerdale. I don't see any sour-looking teenagers muttering their lines or any brilliant "issue" stories such as how Hazel drowns in her own glower.

  9. I've been meaning to do this for ages but have never felt like it or got around to it. This is some of the SOD recaps of 1982 RH. 1982 is the only year that has, aside from one St. Patrick's Day episode, been almost totally unavailable (none on Soapnet and none on Youtube). There are already synopses of 1982 posted here, but these are a little more detailed. I'm going to try to post these in order. This is just what I have now. If I ever get any others from 1982 I will add them. And the Digest recaps are, I believe, about 2 weeks behind the episodes airing at the time of this date. Sorry for cluttering up the board, and for the poor quality of the scans. March 16 and March 30, 1982.
  10. Happy birthday remos!
  11. That's really nice. Thanks. I had never read that. I think Erika enjoyed Ben/Viki more than I did. It was nice to hear about Live Week again.
  12. Found this short 2009 interview with Anne Sward. She could be interviewed for a short film but ATWT couldn't ask her back. Goutman SUCKS. Lyla is the ONLY way I would have cared about the wretched Katie histrionics of ATWT's last years.
  13. I wish this could have happened. It seems like The Doctors had a fair amount of material for black characters but we know little beyond synopses.
  14. It's great to hear all this from someone who watched the show regularly. I remember in SOD's 20th anniversary their roundup spoke to various soap fans and one spoke about Loving being "The Little Soap That Could." I wish I hadn't started watching the show so late in its run. I thought there were some unique elements (like Ava and Kate) which weren't there for The City.
  15. Thank you both for finding these articles. I'm glad the AP covered the end, and treated it with some respect, which a 30 year old show deserves. I didn't realize Doris Quinlan started so early in soaps.
  16. Thanks to everyone. I remember some of Hal being gone, with the witness protection, but didn't remember he was gone for so much of 1991, as apparently being unable to deal with Barbara's lies over Jennifer. I didn't remember that so much of Tess' story played out while "Uncle Hally" was nowhere to be found. That was a bit odd, although nothing in her story necessitated Hal's presence. Tess and Hutch are actually kind of fun and sweet together, especially when he's bemused by her selfish ways. "I swear if she could play both Romeo and Juliet, she would!" I also didn't remember just how long Barbara spent with the filler character Gavin Krueger. The actor is pretty good but he's a very one-note character. saynotoursoap thanks again for the great history. What did you think of Rick Hudson as Rick Ryan? I know this was during a time of big instability at ATWT (1982). Did he ever have a story? I think this may have already been mentioned, but I was reading in the Bryna Laub soap annual, the first few pages of their ATWT summary, and they talk briefly about Sandy's marriage to "beauty products supplier" Norman Garrison. It answered my question about just how tied to Bob's story Sandy was in the years after their divorce. Apparently Norman resented Bob's interference in his marriage with Sandy. During a dinner party, this got so heated that he had a heart attack. Bob had to go with him in the ambulance. Jennifer drove herself home...and was killed.
  17. Wow. I didn't recognize Mark Lewis at all! I had seen him on GL, but he seemed a bit more round-faced there, and didn't use that accent. I only know Mary Ellen's outside work from those Rooms 2 Go commercials she did for years with Ed Fry (I miss those). I'm glad she found happiness. Watching these episodes again I realize even more what a difficult job she had as Frannie, not only replacing a popular actress, but also in playing a character who could easily be called a big fool, yet somehow managing to make her trusting nature and empathy believable. Thank you for the in depth synopsis of the story with Kim, John, Jennifer, and Bob. It sounds incredible. Do you have any idea of when Irna's material ended and when the Soderbergs began? The Daytime TV Stars obit on Irna said that she had been working heavily on ATWT (due to the writers strike) a month before her death. I always wonder what plans Irna would have had for Kim and Bob, and for their baby. I also wonder if the show had Kim gradually fall out of love with Bob, and then in love with Dan (I know she first connected with Dan through Betsy). It's interesting though because the show still had Bob and Kim connected through story, so clearly the viewers did have some need for the two of them to share story. Did Kim and Rick have any type of bond or did he mostly just see her as a means to an end? I guess Nancy's reservations about Jennifer continued for some time; a few years after this they had the story where Nancy and Bob disagreed with Jennifer's wishes to go to college. I'd especially love to see the moment where Bob tells Chris about the affair.
  18. Sandy Becker played Jerry Malone for years on the radio and was very popular. I wonder if they asked him to play the role on TV or if they never considered it. I'd really like to see the episodes where Today is Ours was replaced by Young Doctor Malone. I've never heard of this happening on any other show. It must have been odd for viewers. Was it Matt Steele who was the first heel/bad boy on soaps? I think Schemering also said the show used organ music to very creative effect.

  20. Of all the soaps that might have made syndication Secret Storm is the one I most would have been interested in, as the concept of the show was so strong and still could have been revived, and if they'd managed to keep Jada Rowand/Lori March/Marla Adams/Stephanie Braxton, that would have been a very strong building block.
  21. So did I. I used to enjoy E back then. Now it's just the usual sneering.
  22. Hadn't noticed this before.
