Melrose Place
Has Shirley Jones been on yet? That got her into some trouble in real life.

Santa Barbara Discussion Thread
I've seen comments that Katarina (was that her name?) was supposed to recreate the Mary/Mason dynamic, when the Dobsons returned. Apparently that nun who was played by the deaf actress was also supposed to appease Mary/Mason fans, until they cast said actress during the strike and they couldn't use the character in the way they wanted. I also saw some comments at TWOP which said the Capwells lost their warmth in the last years (eg, Ted/Mason). Do you think that's true?

That's interesting. Do you agree with those who think the show relied too much on a Mary fixation (trying to recreate her in several characters)?

I'd totally forgotten about the winner, and nipple rings - I didn't realize AMC had gay porn stars. Then again what other role could Boyd fill? Not to mention that if it had been a gay man, many viewers would have said he deserved to die. I guess it Tom Hanks and that maudlin, asexual movie to belatedly convince people a mass media culture that it wasn't OK for gay men to die. This type of thing should feel so dated, that episode from 1995, and I guess it is, but when you see the episode, or some of the old comedy from back then (like Kathy and Mo), it still feels like it's with you today. I guess he was the first gay male character on AMC. I kind of wish they'd cast him as Michael. I get the whole "idea" of casting a slab of beef as Michael, because he was a star quarterback! and he was a war hero!! (funny how we never heard Michael mention fighting Don't Ask Don't Tell), but the story was about the idea of Michael, never actually caring about the character himself. I might have cared more with this guy in the role. Yes. She initially chased after Mateo. Who are the others you forget?

That's great to hear. Aside from some moments here and there, she didn't exactly have her best work in OLTL's last few years.

Belinda left town on her own, when Adrian didn't want more of a relationship. Adrian stayed for a brief relationship with Tina, then Matthew St. Patrick left, and Adrian went on a mission. Tina, a non-character, vanished without a trace.

It's strange with McTavish - I'm not sure any writer has been so OTT and dark at the same time. I guess Reilly, but I don't think she was ever that far out. It's a shame because she's actually a good soap writer in many ways. This particular era, although Janet's story is absurd, seems less out there than her 1998-1999 run; perhaps that's down to FMB, or to Disney not being around. Her 2006 stuff also isn't as OTT as I had expected. It's just very dark and damaged, and Erica is stuck in a huge rut, which is always glaring. That's right. There was some type of council or summit on issues - I think one was teen pregnancy. This is actually the only time I can remember a soap doing a story where a gay man is dying of AIDS. ATWT did it, offcamera, but everything else was straight men, women, or kids, or supporting characters who seem fine when oncamera. I really wish they'd brought the actor in another role or kept him around longer. He's quite good. Yeah, I think he replaced Larry Pine in that role. Pine was good sleazy fun. A year or two I think.

Frank was gone by the time Faith got involved with Ari, wasn't he? I saw some magazine which recapped spring 1982 RH and they had a photo of Frank and Faith and it said he was upset about her relationship with Ari. Then again they also showed a photo of Richard Muenz, who hadn't played Joe Novak in almost two years.

Supposedly Margie Impert was cast as Rachel because of a resemblance to Robin Strasser, which I have never seen in any of the few photos of Impert at that time. I wish we knew how she was onscreen.

I think with Vicky Wyndham, they had one unsuccessful recast of Rachel, then they cast her as she'd played a bitch on GL. I wonder if they cast her knowing they would redeem her or if that came later. I think Lemay changed her once he got enthused about Wyndham.

It looks like it's time for Nikki Haley, Susanna Martinez, and other media stars to come out and tell us how much the GOP loves women. In one day, they are told to put aspirin between their legs, told they dress like whores, and are barred from speaking on a panel due to lack of experience. http://2012.talkingp...day.php?ref=fpa
