  6. Two months since the passing of Billy Miller (“All My Children,” “General Hospital” and “The Young and the Restless”), the late actor’s family and friends have set up a permanent scholarship endowment at the University of Texas at Austin to help radio/television and film undergraduate students with financial need. Born William John Miller II, Billy was an avid movie buff, earning his bachelor’s degree in radio and television in 2002 at the University of Texas at Austin. He passed away in September, surrendering his life to bipolar depression, which he struggled with his whole life. The three-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning actor was just 43 years old. “I hope BJ is remembered for the kind-hearted, silly, funny, goofy, generous, beautiful soul that he was,” said Miller’s sister, Megan Hubbell. “His megawatt smile, deep belly laugh and gorgeous mug were gifts on screen, but his true self was a bright light that will be carried with us forever.” The William John Miller II “Billy Miller” Memorial Scholarship raises funds in the late actor’s honor while paying tribute to his legacy of life and love of acting. He is said to have had a secret passion for acting after beginning a love affair with movies starting in the 1980s, specifically after seeing his first film in theaters, “E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial.” Actor Billy Miller (CBS’s The Young and the Restless) discusses winning the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor on THE TALK, Monday, June 23, 2014 (© 2014) Photo by Lisette M. Azar/CBS Miller, who first made a name for himself in daytime playing Richie Novak on “All My Children,” went on to receive five Daytime Emmy Award Award nominations for his portrayal of Billy Abbott on “The Young and the Restless,” ultimately taking home three statues including two for Supporting Actor (2010, 2013) and one for Lead Actor (2015). After his time on “The Young and the Restless,” Miller joined “General Hospital” in 2016, first as Jason Morgan and then later as Drew Cain when it was revealed that Drew was actually Jason’s twin brother. “We want something positive to be held in his name in perpetuity through the University he loved,” Hubbell said. “He would be honored to know that even in death, he can help someone else realize their dreams.” Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas, Miller was one of just 20 students accepted into the University of Texas at Austin’s prestigious production sequence program in radio/television and film. He originally joined the school in the zoology program before switching. UT was reportedly Miller’s first choice, even though he had several options presented to him post-high school. (© 2013) Photo by Lisette M. Azar/CBS “I always admired the guts it took to go after a dream in Hollywood that so many people tried to discourage,” Hubbell said of her brother’s storied career, which included appearances in such shows as “Suits,” “Ray Donovan,” “Castle” and “NCIS,” among others. “He heard, ‘You’ll never make it’ more times than I care to count, but he used those comments as fuel and said, ‘Watch me.’” In a statement released a few days after his passing, Miller’s mother, Patricia Miller, said, “I want to personally thank the many fans & personal friends for the overwhelming amount of love, prayers & condolences sent to me and my family on the devastating death of my beautiful son BJ — Billy Miller. He fought a long hard valiant battle with bipolar depression for years. He did everything he could to control the disease. He loved his family, his friends and his fans but in the end the disease won the fight and he surrendered his life.” “BJ would want anyone struggling with intrusive thoughts to seek professional help,” said Hubbell, encouraging people to take stock of their mental health. “Do not suffer in silence or try to muscle through on your own. Mental health is vitally important and shouldn’t be spoken about in silos behind closed doors but rather in open forums with open arms. Shame has no place in the discussion to seek help.” Click here to donate to the William John Miller II “Billy Miller” Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship helps radio/television and film undergraduates in memory of William “Billy” John Miller II. Donation amounts can be customized and given one-time, monthly, or annually. 7. For the first time since 1982, CBS will become the broadcast home of the Golden Globe Awards, with “The 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards” scheduled to air on the network on Sunday, January 7, 2024. NBC last aired the awards show in January 2023. Nominations for the Golden Globes will be announced on Monday, December 11. The Golden Globe Awards, often called Hollywood’s “Best Party of the Year,” is one of the biggest nights on the calendar for live viewing. It is also the largest awards show in the world to celebrate the best in film and television. This year’s show boasts two newly added awards categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television. Courtesy of CBS In announcing the deal on Friday, the network noted that the awards ceremony “will have the most powerful lead-in audience, airing directly following an ‘NFL on CBS’ Sunday doubleheader.” The three-hour show will be broadcast live coast to coast, from 8:00-11:00 p.m. ET and 5:00-8:00 p.m. PT on CBS. Stations in the Pacific time zone that air the event live will also rebroadcast the entire Golden Globe Awards telecast in primetime immediately following the live presentation. In addition to the live broadcast on the network, the televised ceremony will be available both live and On Demand on Paramount+*. The Golden Globes helps expand CBS’s awards show offerings, including the Grammy Awards, the Daytime Emmy Awards, the Tony Awards, and the CMT Music Awards, among other specials the network airs annually. “Live entertainment and sports have been, and will always be, a hallmark of CBS, and the Globes adds an exciting new dimension to our first quarter schedule this year,” said George Cheeks, president and chief executive officer of CBS. “The January timing also provides the added benefit of yet another signature platform to promote the return of CBS’ new primetime schedule in February.” “We’re so proud to bring the Golden Globes to CBS to celebrate 81 years of awards show history,” said Jay Penske, CEO, chairman and founder of Penske Media and owner of Dick Clark Productions. “CBS has demonstrated an impressive 30-year commitment to the Grammys and been instrumental to their long-term success. In CBS, we found an ideal partner who understands the value of live entertainment programming and whose multiplatform distribution model is reflective of how global audiences choose to consume content today.” “In an age when audiences are viewing content on their own schedules, we are delighted to bring the Golden Globes to viewers globally through CBS’ robust platforms,” said Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes. “Audiences will have the ability to enjoy our show live and On Demand. We cannot wait to reveal the magic of what will be our most unforgettable show yet.” Produced and owned by Dick Clark Productions, the Golden Globe Awards are viewed in more than 185 countries worldwide. In June, Dick Clark Productions and Eldrige announced that they had acquired all the Golden Globes’ assets, rights, and properties from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), formally dissolving the long-running organization and its membership for more commercial opportunities. Founded in 1943 by a group of foreign journalists covering Hollywood amid the horror of World War II, the HFPA sought to shine a light on Tinseltown to revive a world-weary from the war. Like many American icons, the HFPA had run its course and was dissolved in favor of a new Golden Globes corporate entity with the expertise and dynamic new leadership to tackle the 21st Century. Dick Clark himself first began producing the Globes in 1983, and that tradition continues via his eponymous Dick Clark Productions, which serves as the production partner for the Globes. Ernst & Young continues to count the ballots to ensure the integrity of the vote. Note*: Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers will have access to stream live via the live feed of their local CBS affiliate on the service and On Demand. Paramount+ Essential subscribers will not have the option to stream live but will have access to On Demand the day after the special airs. 8. Technically speaking, yes, you are correct. That is a spoiler. However, I personally do not consider casting announcements as a "spoiler," specifically when the news is revealed by the show itself and plastered across several websites and publications, including mainstream outlets. I did not intend to reveal anything when I posted, but what I said fit into the context of this post, especially in reference to AI use and the General Hospital mention of Laura Wright being inserted into a flashback. My apologies if my post spoiled anything for anyone who reads this thread.
  9. With Cole returning, Y&R could do something similar with Amelia Heinle as Victoria. Ethically, of course. It would also depend on whether the Net Code contract allows for something like this since it is different from the TV/theatrical one that was just agreed upon (pending ratification by members) by SAG and directly includes things related to AI.
  10. Allegedly, that was the case. However, Chris Engen did issue a statement on the matter about a week after it was reported he walked off the set. Here's more of what he said: https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2009/05/chris-engen-issues-statement-on-myspace I want to point out that there is a difference between being hired with the knowledge you're playing a certain type of character vs. that character doing something you never expected, specifically romantically. Not saying I am second guessing Chris' statement. Still, Adam Newman, up until that point, didn't ever do something like that until Michael Muhney took over the role (not talking about Muhney personally, just his portrayal of the character as written).
  11. IMO, writers should not give characters medical conditions that should always impact the character's traits and abilities, such as Robin with HIV or Nikki with MS. Other than curable diseases, they should only give a character something if it moves a storyline and will have to follow through. Otherwise, it is disrespectful to the viewer dealing with the matter in real life as they see a character doing things they can't do themselves. Just sayin'.
  12. Agree with your agreement. I'll keep my mouth shut on elaborating but we are thinking similarly.
  13. The uploading of copywritten material is not allowed for obvious reasons.
  14. Yes, she didn't "originate" the role. I mistakenly just wrote what CBS gave in their press release. The role was first introduced in 1971 played by two different actresses. However, once departing in 1972, the character didn't appear again until 1978 with Zenk in the role. Therefore, she "originated" who we know to be Barbara Ryan vs. the previous portrayals.
  15. The CBS license fee is more valuable than any international production fees B&B takes in. CBS helps pay the production costs. The international fees just pays for excess food. Let's not think otherwise. GH could go to streaming, I agree. It is ABC.com's top-viewed show and top-viewed page overall. Y&R despite the lack of online buzz does quite well on streaming. It might get a budget cut when CBS announces a potentially two or more season pickup in the next few months but it's going nowhere. It and The Price is Right will be the last shows standing on what is left of CBS Daytime.
  16. Passions had already been shipped off to DirecTV which had way more subscribers than it does now. There was a time, I believe, NBC had published episodes of the show on NBC.com but I don't remember it exactly. I doubt Peacock, which itself isn't a success, would have helped. I do think they could still do a reboot on Peacock with how much it costs them to have DAYS but the difference is NBC half-owned the show which means they'd have to put more of their own money into the budget. It would also take someone with power or whispering skills to get the thought working into the big bosses heads. Guiding Light could have survived a few more years but the Peapack nonsense would have to have been scrapped sooner rather than later. Some web series have better productions and I'm talking early iterations of web series. That said, Paramount+ couldn't save it no more than SoapCity.com with its pay per episode plot could. Sadly.
  17. A full month after All My Children's final air date, GH was not too far above what it is doing now: https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2011/11/ratings-all-soaps-up-in-women-18-49-demo Total Viewers 1. Y&R 4,467,000 (-12,000/-411,000) 2. B&B 3,180,000 (+113,000/+72,000) 3. OLTL 2,562,000 (-31,000/+217,0000) 4. GH 2,373,000 (+56,000/+91,000) 5. DAYS 2,351,000 (-42,000/-73,000) That said, the show SPIKED in 2013. Again, I can't pinpoint why. Same for all three remaining soaps. https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2013/05/ratings-all-soaps-rebound-from-terrible-week-2 Total Viewers 1. Y&R 4,339,000 (+8,000/+20,000) 2. B&B 3,255,000 (+87,000/+193,000) 3. GH 2,566,000 (+115,000/+124,000) 4. DAYS 2,443,000 (+47,000/+9,000) The only thing that has drastically changed, and this applies to all shows on broadcast television (and even cable, too) are the demos. Fewer and fewer younger people are watching.
  18. With the exception of Y&R, all three remaining soaps are basically doing figures similar to their performances 10 years ago. In fact, B&B is still doing numbers in the range of its then series low in Total Viewers all the way back in 2011!!! https://www.soapoperanetwork.com/2011/02/ratings-bb-hits-new-lows-in-viewers 1. Y&R 5,117,000 (-216,000/-123,000) 2. B&B 2,950,000 (-254,000/-317,000) <—– new low 3. OLTL 2,692,000 (-158,000/same) 4. GH 2,671,000 (-222,000/-215,000) 5. DAYS 2,630,000 (-400,000/-695,000) 6. AMC 2,570,000 (-83,000/-401,0000)
  19. Other than a big bump for the shows in 2013 (not sure why), I'd say that AMC would be in the 1.6-1.7 million range with OLTL around 1.8-1.9, or even over 2 million based on GH occupying its slot since September 2012 and it having the better ratings. Of course, OLTL didn't always do better than GH so it could also be doing AMC numbers based on my sample. GL I hate to say would probably still have gotten canceled, but would be in the range of The Talk while ATWT would be in the 1.4-1.5 range. I'm basing this on how they were doing at the time of cancellation relative to what programs are doing now. Passions would definitely have been canceled as it was doing what DAYS was doing prior to its move to Peacock. Which means it would likely have been under a million viewers.
  20. Sigh. I miss soaps so much!!!! Why oh why, can't some network executive wake up and realize that only soaps will thrive in today's markets? The second highest-rated talk show (syndication) is Kelly Clarkson with just 1.3 million viewers. GH, B&B and Y&R get over 2 million DAILY. Back on topic: You're right, that is the same theme, but a very small snippet. Only a true soap fan could catch it. I still want them to go back to the old one. The CGI used in the current one is a mess.
  21. It's a CBS promo. They probably asked their cast to share it on their social channels. From the outset, it sounds like music from the As The World Turns theme without being the literal theme (copyright) to tie in her role on that show to her new one on The Young and the Restless to hopefully woo in lapsed soap viewers.
  22. I agree. These messages should be posted on THEIR Instagram. Not his. A dead person can't speak for themselves so no one should be using said dead person's social media once their thoughts and voice gets silenced forever. That sounds morbid, I know, but that's my opinion. That said, again, my main issue is the person isn't identifying themselves. Other than the previous post, we still didn't know officially who was posting on his supposed behalf.
  23. For the first time since 1999, actor J. Eddie Peck will reprise his role as Cole Howard on “The Young and the Restless” when the character reunites with ex-wife Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) later this month. Originating the role of Cole on the daytime drama series in 1993, Peck made a name for himself in Hollywood starting in the early 1980s when he appeared in such shows as “Wildside,” “Knight Rider,” Murder, She Wrote,” “Cheers,” “Dynasty” and “Dallas.” In fact, before joining “The Young and the Restless,” Peck had a starring role on “Days of our Lives” playing Howard “Hawk” Hawkins from 1991-1992. He later appeared in multiple seasons of the ABC Family drama “Kyle XY” and most recently co-starred in the 2016 movie “Divorce Texas Style.” Photo by Sonja Flemming/CBS After departing “The Young and the Restless” in 1999, Peck ended up in Pine Valley as Dr. Jake Martin on “All My Children.” During his three years on the show, the actor ironically played opposite Heinle, who at the time was on the ABC soap as Mia Saunders. During Peck’s original run on “The Young and the Restless,” the role of Victoria Newman was played by Heather Tom, who currently stars as Katie Logan on “The Bold and the Beautiful.” At press time, CBS only noted that Victoria has a surprise reunion with her ex-husband and that Peck will begin airing sometime later this month. However, based on photos from his upcoming return, Soap Opera Network has learned that fans can expect Cole to pop back on screen just in time for Thanksgiving festivities. When Cole was last seen in Genoa City, he had taken a professorship at Oxford. Prior to his departure, the character was a ranch hand and novelist whose love interests included both Victoria and Ashley Abbott, who at the time had been played by Shari Shattuck before Eileen Davidson ultimately returned to the role in March 1999. 24. Personally, I thought Victoria and Ryan were HOT HOT HOT! Cole, while hot himself, was a bore with Victoria. I couldn't wait for Victoria to cheat on him with Ryan. I HATED when they killed Ryan off. Scott Reeves can still get it today!!!!
  25. February 4, 1993 Description: Ryan and Nina run into each other at Gina's and have dinner together. Victor's secretary, Connie alerts Victor that Eve Howard is passing through. Traci pops in at Lauren's for old-time sake. Traci and Lauren trade barbs concerning Brad. Nicholas asks Victoria why she is home and not with Ryan. Eve Howard shows up at Victor's door.
