I don't see why they made her a Sugden, except to be able to say "look, we're honouring the show's history and bolstering the Sugden presence on the show". TIIC are full of hyperbole, which they prove every time they talk about upcoming stories. They're always going to be "the most exciting explosive stories ever with long-lasting consequences that will turn lives upside down forever" etc 🙄
Serena being a Sugden has made no difference to the character than if she had just been any random new character. But to be fair, I guess you can't put that entirely on the current showrunners. The Sugden family has been so decimated over the years that introducing a new member of the family was always going to be difficult. And some would probably say that I'm too nitpicky with my complaints about the way Serena is connected to the family. So be it. I still think there were better ways of introducing her. The actress could very well pass for being half-Spanish so the better option would have been to introduce her as Joe's daughter with some woman he met during his last year when he lived with Annie and Amos in Spain, instead of inventing a whole new group of never-before-mentioned Sugdens.
