I don’t get the excitement about the Lia actress.

Me, either. She's giving "The Devil Wears a Labcoat."

I think the actress is good, and I really enjoyed her first weeks. Lately though, the writing has failed her.

What is she supposed to do with a script that has her walking around with a clipboard doing nothing but warning hospital workers and gossiping with Ashley and Shanice? She could have been written a a smart criminal who should be feared, and instead is lost in this horrible blood plasma story -- one that is so badly written that I have no words.

I don’t know why the writers are stuck in a holding pattern. My litmus test on whether this show will last is how they end the Hayley/Bill storyline. This is currently the “soapiest”, most high-stakes story the show is doing. They’ve been building it for a long time. If they bungle the climax and ending of this story, I may stop watching the show. I love spending time with the characters but I want to watch a show where at least OCCASIONALLY something happens that makes me EXCITED for the next episode. Right now, I’m not excited. I enjoy it while I’m watching it but I don’t think about the show when I’m not watching it (compare this to how I felt watching Lauren and Sheila battle it out in the 90s when I couldn’t wait to get home from school and watch the episodes I’d videotaped).

I really do enjoy this show but this is such a good and fair description. I don't want that late 90s/early 2000s "miss a day, miss a lot!" OTT style where something huge has to happen every day. But I do need something to happen more than once or twice a year with actual stakes.

I think in the first few weeks, there was way too much happening, and maybe some people found that off-putting. Then, they took a hard turn in the opposite direction and the show is now super boring.

I was thinking this last night watching the original "Devil Wears Prada." It is all about character arc and development, but it has nearly no plot and no stakes. My Gen Z daughter watching it for the first time said it was "boring" and she also gave up on Gates for the same reason. Now, she is a 21-year-old Tik-Tok addict, so do with that what you will. However, she has good points.

Tik-tok addict = shorter attention span, instant gratification.

The original Devil Wears Prada was more about a character journey, but the movie was watered down from the book version where Miranda was pure evil without any layers nor that final scene in the movie.

Also, the actors playing Grayson and Ashley are being interviewed on the Locher Room... hopefully the interviewer doesn't interrupt too much :)

I’m a 40-year-old TikTok addict myself and I would like to clarify something.

While the app - or better yet, the consumption model - has definitely affected my attention span and my memory, the model is mostly about value.

If I’m watching a video on my stupid phone I want it to give me value (ie: valuable information or entertainment) without wasting any time. This is not some drama that you have to build up. And I’m not holding my breath to watch your AI-made opening credits or to listen to you introducing yourself with your extensive resume for over 50 seconds. There’s an art in giving value to viewers and some TikTokers have mastered it.

So what I’m saying is that while attention span is an issue: A) it’s always been the case - that’s why shows have been getting faster and tighter over the years; b) if you as a writer commit to giving value to a viewer, the viewer will recognize it.

Having multiple characters sit down at restaurants talking to no end about something happened offscreen in a place we’ll never see, in a scene we’ll never see… is not value. Not one bit.

47-year-old here, and I agree with @Aback completely. I get nearly nothing out of the recent episodes. I still barely understand the plasma story and I haven't missed an episode. Almost nothing happens. It's sad. I really loved this show. I mean, I still do, but it's almost all filler now. Where's Lynette? When will Vanessa figure out she was played? Is Hayley going to actually DO any scheming that will have results? Where is Madison's mother? Is Anita cured? Can we put Kat in the Lynette/Hayley orbit and have her piece everything together? Maybe after Hayley kills Tomas...

That cracked me up. Brilliant.

As for the show I believe two things are true at once:

  • they have issues when it comes to structuring stories.

  • they’ve been deliberately coasting it for whatever reason maybe in attendance of a multiple year renewal.

I expect things to pick up steadily from the Cotillion on.

Here’s my idea for the resolution of the “Hayley is a fraud” storyline: The producers need to find the money for a small location shoot. I know it’s not the 80s or 90s anymore but it’s not beyond the realm of possibility either. The perfect place would be to film in St. Barts, since Hayley is always bringing it up and the characters already have a reason to go there (Bill bought the property there last year). Anyway, I think the climax of the storyline should occur in St. Barts. Maybe people are on to Hayley’s scheme and she is forced to improvise, pushing Bill off a cliff or setting him up to drown in the ocean. The characters who are on to Hayley (Kat, Dani, Jacob, Naomi, whoever) are racing to St. Barts to stop Hayley and save Bill. Imagine how exciting that would be!

An alternative is they could have Hayley use the St. Barts property to hold someone like Tomas. Let’s say that Tomas figures out Hayley’s scam but is subdued by Randy before he can warn Bill. Randy and Hayley take Tomas to the St. Barts property and chain him up there until they figure out what to do with him. Meanwhile, Fairmont Crest is abuzz over Tomas disappearing. If they did it right, they could drag things on for months and every episode would be suspenseful. You could even build a “St. Barts cottage” set and film everything in studio (except for any outdoors scenes).

Idk, I’m not a producer and I have no idea about budgets and stuff like that. But this show NEEDS this storyline to be memorable as it reaches its conclusion. If these writers are good, they would drag the climax out for months, leading us through various twists and turns. I just have a sneaking suspicion they’re going to bungle the landing on this one because while the writers are excellent at writing dialogue, their plotting overall leaves much to be desired.

Some days I love the languid pace of the show. Some days it’s nice to just hang out with characters you enjoy. BUT there also needs to be some days with high tension and drama. I have some ideas on how to improve the show. Maybe I’ll write them out later (I’m on my lunch break at work right now) just to see if anyone agrees with me.

But yes, this show NEEDS to have more than just characters casually having lunch together and discussing the SAME things over and over. And if the writers want me to care about Martin’s political campaign or the plasma story, they need to stop simply “scratching the surface” with these stories. I don’t know diddly squat about Martin’s politics, I don’t know his opponents, I don’t even know what political party he belongs to (okay I know why the writers won’r disclose his party, but still). Should the audience really care about Martin winning the election when the totality of the story has been Martin and Vernon talking about how dangerous it would be for him to run, and that’s it. I wanna see Martin’s opponent being underhanded, sending a cute male secretary into Martin’s office to seduce him and create a scandal, or to steal important campaign papers, ANYTHING.
