ARTICLE: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Renewed For Season 23 At ABC; Kevin McKidd & Kim Raver To Exit As Series Regulars

Grey's Anatomy, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo

Last week, it was announced that longtime cast members Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver would be exiting “Grey’s Anatomy” at the end of the current 2025-2026 television season. On Monday, ABC formally renewed the medical drama series for a 23rd season.

According to Deadline, 20th Television, which produces the series for corporate sibling ABC, has until the end of June to pick up the cast for next season, with the exception of Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber), Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson), Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd) and Chris Carmack (Atticus “Link” Lincoln), all of whom have at least another year on their current contracts. That said, Raver (Teddy Altman) and McKidd (Owen Hunt) also had another year on their deals, despite being let go. Additionally, with the show historically letting no more than two high-profile players go at a time, it’s unlikely other veterans will be exiting with them.

Deadline reports that, even though the show has been renewed, the order size remains undetermined. “A renewal was expected to be accompanied by a budget cut, with a slightly reduced order than the 18 episodes the show has produced the last two seasons a possibility,” said the outlet.

The show, which sees original series star Ellen Pompeo continuing as narrator and appearing in episodes in a recurring capacity, remains a global hit for Disney, which owns ABC and 20th Television. The series is the most-streamed globally across Hulu and Disney+, and ranks second overall in the U.S. across Hulu and Netflix, per Nielsen.

The pickup sees the Shonda Rhimes-created series extending its record as television’s longest-running primetime medical drama.

Pompeo executive produces alongside Rhimes, director and recurring cast member Debbie Allen, Betsy Beers of Shondaland and current showrunner Meg Marinis.

“Grey’s Anatomy” joins the already renewed “9-1-1,” “9-1-1: Nashville,” “Abbott Elementary” and “High Potential” as scripted fare set to air on the network’s schedule during the 2026-2027 television season.

Thank you for the news. I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back at Season 8, but it's good to know that since both were more or less starting around that time, they will be around (and developed from what clips I've seen of Sophia Bush's appearance on the show) for a while before I get to this point.

And wow at it being the show that keeps going.
