Y&R: May 2026 Discussion Thread

-- Matt's time on the show should be about up, but Griffith is such a terrible writer that we know Matt will be around longer than he should be. I'm already burned out on Matt Clark, so RH can go tomorrow.
-- Josh Morrow has ben doing really nice work, I agree -- his strongest in years. He's better than the writing in the addiction story, I know that.
-- Cane and Lily continue to be a highlight for me. BF and CK have really strong chemistry.
-- Shemar Moore's return kicked off a lot of story for other characters, but now we're left with not seeing Malcolm, the focus of all this story.
-- The Newman company fights with Phyllis are still a snore. I just don't care about any of it.
-- The show looks good and it feels like they're doing better with sets, but it's still not good.

I see a lot of opinion online that the Impaler is either Carlton or Kial. Greg Vaughan appears far too infrequently, so that's a shrug if he's named.
Carlton? Eh...I wish I could get excited about that reveal. Ideally, this disclosure should be shocking, and Carlton wouldn't be. The truth is that the entire plasma story has been so badly written that I don't care all that much.
If Carlton is named, doesn't that mean he's off the show? MVJ seems to show a lot of loyalty to actors/characters whether they're working or not. Characters on soaps have been getting away with crimes for decades, I know, but we already have Joey and Leslie getting away with a ton. I just want whoever this Impaler is to be off the show.

Mid-2002 Guiding Light was awful as it gave us viewers hope. Ed was back, history seemed to be valued, vets were being used, the mob and island stuff was being phased out. It seemed too good to be true- and it was. They last time I had any hope was very early Kreizman until that horrible Phillip exit storyline.

Potential mystery solved regarding the July 10, 1952 episode. A newspaper article from July 1, 1952 lists the original TV cast of "Guiding Light" as:
Jone Allison as Meta, Herb Nelson (as Joe Roberts), Susan Douglas (as Kathy Roberts), Lyle Sudrow (as Bill Bauer), Charita Bauer (as Bertha Bauer), Theo Goetz (as Papa Bauer), Anne Marie Gayer, Bill Redfield, Ed Prentiss (as Richard Grant), Alice Yourman (as Laura Grant), Florine Seres, Santos Ortega, Anne Burr (as Gloria LaRue), and Phil Sterling (as Sid Harper).
Some of this is easy to identify and I added in the names. It would seem that Anne Marie Gayer is the actress playing Trudy.

Soap Central has Anne Burr and Phil Sterling appearing later in the year as Gloria and Sid, but it seems safe to say they are there at the beginning as Meta says she is going to see them. I also have a late August, 1952, episode description that says that Sid is excited about Alice Graham so Sid sticks around and we know that Gloria's infatuation with Bill Bauer seems to be receding by January, 1953, so I imagine Sid and Gloria return with Meta or shortly after.
Ed Prentiss and Alice Yourman are seen in the 1953 episodes as Richard and Laura Grant so I imagine they are here, but I just don't know what there story would be.
The bigger guessing game is the remaining actors: Florine Seres, Bill Redfield, and Santos Ortega. I'm gonna wager a guess that Florine Seres may be Alice. Similarly, I'd venture a guess that Bill Redfield is the actor playing Bob Lang as it is established during the trial that Bob and Kathy married around Labor Day. Despite what it is said online, Dick Grant does not seem to be present. I thought Redfield might be playing Dick, but I found an November, 1953, article describing the episode in which Kathy told Dick about Bob Lang being Robin's father and Kathy states she hadn't heard from Dick in six months when she married Bob. My only other guess is Redfield is Joey Roberts. I'm wondering if Santos Ortega is playing Dr. Bruce Banning, who would have appeared in the episode prior to the one that is online. If not Bruce, maybe the editor at the City Times John "Mac" McIntyre, who I think is referenced in the 1953 episodes online by Joe at one point.
I believe Ortega was Bruce Banning before Les Damon took over the role.
My best guess after seeing @Reverend Ruthledge's GL 1952 thread that William Redfield is most probably Bob Lang. I came across this photo of Florine Seres from 1946. (From NBC Radio's DOCTORS AT HOME)
I'm going to hazard a guess that Florine Seres was Karen "Bunny" Grant. Any help proving this would be awesome!

Back in Selby Flats, Kathy tells Joe that she’s moving out and getting a sales job at a department store so Meta can move back.
-7/1/52-7/31/52. Sid tries to keep Bill and Gloria apart. Meta, visiting Trudy in New York, tells Bruce that she’s decided to go back to California and to her husband Joe. Kathy moves into an apartment with a girl named Alice. Bert is jealous of Gloria and wants Bill to stay at home. Knowing Joe and Meta have money, Alice introduces herself to Meta and tries to butter her up to get money out of her by lying that it’s for Kathy. Gloria starts drinking again. Bob wants to get serious with Kathy and talks marriage to her but she tells him she wants to hold on to her newfound independence. Kathy confesses to Alice that she’s still hung up on Dick, who hasn’t spoken to her in months. Gloria visits Meta to express her concern that Bill will start drinking again."

Guiding Light Discussion Thread

Guiding Light having a gothic overture made sense for the show, and it probably started that way long before the Dobson's joined the show.
Pre-Dobsons, just based on the few episodes that have come onto the surface, it looked as though the Kit character had a gothic vibe to her as well as reading summaries of Holly's brother Ken and his obsessions/hatred for Ed.
Dobson's had the Wexlers, Spaulding's, & the Roger/Holly arc as their examples of pure gothic.
Marland had Quint/Nola and his house, had Helena/Silas/Mona, plus had the whole Mark/Amanda arc.
Long went full on Tennessee Williams in her first stint as head-writer with Reva/Josh/Billy, Beth's SA story, Tony & Annabelle's cottage story that tied into the Spauldings, Lesley's Ann death scene. High tech Gothic were displayed with Infinity, Reva's attempted suicide with Barbra Streisand's Somewhere playing. At the same time,the Blue Orchid had a very dark and bleak set design that combined 80s glitch with gothic overtures.
Her 2nd stint was less southern gothic, but still gothic altogether. The Adam Malik (Roger) story, Reva's PPD with Josh's nightmares predicting Reva's demise, Alan Michael's kidnapping, the gaslighting of Phillip with the fake Beth story, Philip trying to dig up Beth's grave, & the Sonni story were all examples of Gothic story telling.
The only other Gothic stories I can recall was the Marian (Brent in disguise) story in the mid 90s and the stupid Reva stepping into the portrait (but that seemed more fantasy than gothic).
I think the move away from Gothic in the early 90s (and Curlee didn't seem to write Gothic stories) was the first step toward GL moving away from its identity since the Gothic element was an important element going back to at least the late 60s/early 70s.
