ARTICLE: ‘General Hospital’ Tops Hulu’s Top 15 Today Rankings Chart

Marking what appears to be the first time it has reached the milestone on the streaming service, during the week of June 2-6, 2025 ABC’s “General Hospital” ranked No. 1 on Hulu for three out of five days, topping the likes of “Nine Perfect Strangers” (Hulu), “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” (Hulu), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu), “Adults” (FX), “Family Guy” (FOX) and “Bob’s Burgers” (FOX), among others.

Starting the month as the ninth most watched series on the service on Sunday, June 1, “General Hospital” ranked 12th on Monday, June 2. By Tuesday, June 3, the show suddenly surged to the number one spot, topping “ABC 20/20” (ABC), which ranked second, and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which ranked third.

The trend continued on Wednesday, June 4, with the soap ranking No. 1.

On Thursday, June 5, it had fallen to second place as it was displaced by “Nine Perfect Strangers,” which ranked fifth the previous day. However, by Friday, June 6, “General Hospital” took back the top spot, again ranking No. 1, this time ahead of “Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service” (FOX) and “MasterChef” (FOX), each of which placed second and third, respectively.

“General Hospital” kept its position at the top on Saturday, June 7, topping “Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service” in second and “Family Guy” in third.

While the accomplishment can’t be ignored, it should be noted that widely watched primetime fare like “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Will Trent” and “The Rookie” are currently on hiatus, having completed their most recent seasons.. That said, only the rolling 10 episodes of “General Hospital” remain available on the service daily, while several of the previously mentioned series have either several hundred or several dozen episodes available as part of their TV library.

Launched September 14, 2023, the Hulu Top 15 Today list is a collection of trending movies and TV series on the service, which is built off a formula that takes several factors into account, including viewership and the launching of new content, a press release noted at the time.

Overall, its purpose is to help show what is trending on the service at a particular moment in time, with Hulu’s entire On Demand catalog eligible for inclusion, regardless of when the title premiered on the platform. The list is updated daily between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. PT.

According to Hulu, the Top 15 equation is made up of total views at the episode level within a 24-hour period and considers the growing popularity of new shows/movies released during that time frame. Meanwhile, although multiple episodes of a series help a show get into the top rankings, only the highest episode will count towards the ultimate ranking position of the series. “That way, a series won’t be featured more than once in the Top 15,” the service points out.

The Hulu Top 15 Today list is separate from the service’s performance reports for select titles, which are based on views (total stream time divided by runtime available).

Note: Unlike the regularly published Live+Same Day ratings reported here on Soap Opera Network, the Hulu rankings are provided directly by the service but without viewing figures, such as total minutes watched. Live+Same Day ratings are provided by Nielsen, an independent tracking service.

I don't understand why Hulu, since it's under the same parent company as ABC/GH, doesn't house all of GH's episode archives instead of only 10 recent episodes at a time.

I believe it's due to streaming rights agreements; I mean, even Disney+ with Hulu does not even have GH on Disney+.

Food for thought: maybe limiting episodes to 10 helps the streaming numbers. It sounds counter-intuitive but hear me out. Pre-streaming viewers were trained to dip out and dip back in (or watch less often) when the show bored them. For younger viewers who discover on soap on streaming, it may not be intuitive to skip ahead when a period of the show doesn't interest them. So if they stop watching a show with a heavy catalogue for a few weeks or months, they'll be "stuck" in the period that caused them to stop watching when they resume, get frustrated, and possibly be gone for good. With only 10 episodes available, they may give the show another chance, enjoy the newer storylines, and resume watching regularly.

I don’t get it—how can they create, direct, and produce the show but not own the rights to it? That just doesn’t make sense. If CBS is streaming classic The Bold and the Beautiful, then wouldn’t it make sense for ABC/DISNEY to do the same with All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, Port Charles, Ryan’s Hope, and Loving plus with the option to upscale them to HD/4K?

The legal side of things is baffling. This is a market with serious value—there’s money to be made here! Yet instead of capitalizing on these beloved classics, they’re just letting them sit untouched in some warehouse. Why let these iconic shows collect dust when there’s a huge audience eager to watch them again?
