BTG: March 2025 Discussion Thread

I now know at least 5 friends of mine that I never told about the show and don’t watch soap operas, that now watch BTG. That’s actually wild to me and super exciting. I imagine there’s a lot of us in the black community that are experiencing this.

I liked the Duprees are strutting their stuff and dancing around!

it kind of reminded me of the debut week of Passions when the Lopez-Fitzgeralds were dancing in their living room, except this time we get to see the upper class folks having fun like a real family!

I think there was a throwaway line that Jan (Ashley's mom) heard about Dani throwing the coffee cup from when she was working at Vanessa's house.

I'm also curious to know if Ashley knows Hayley and she opted to side with Naomi.. or if Ashley/Naomi are friends only because of Derek and Jacob being friends.

Karla Mosley is shining.

The Dupree dance moment was ADORABLE. That's what soaps are about.

Vanessa is Dani's best friend, period.

The hospital set is so unoriginal. I hate soaps depicting hospitals as town squares where everybody can drop by. People hate going to the hospital. Same goes for the police station. And don't get me started on the casino mob. This is all too GH for me.

I'm not worried about the fast pace, I'm worried about missing story beats. For example, Martin has yet to share any meaningful scenes with his father or his sister. I don't like that.

Yeah one would think Vernon is his father given the amount of scenes they’ve shared. Martin’s parents must be unaware of his killer secret as well.

I’m worried that this is a ‘Thorne, Kristen & Felicia’ situation - where you got too many related characters and too many relationships the writers have not thought about - but it’s still early days, so yeah.

Another random take I wanted to add: I love the rooftop (that must be a green screen right? Or is it cardboard?) - I wasn’t really fond of some of the angles they chose for the cousins scene.

BITD, my grandmother's brother made his way around the neighborhood if you get my drift, so I have elder cousins who are technically "half-siblings" (black people don't play that "half" ish), born within months of each other. I'm not judging Ted today on dipping his stick twenty years ago, a person can change a lot in that matter of time. I think it's a very interesting dynamic if Eva is Kat's (and Martin's) sister, and yet, I wouldn't be surprised if in the Maury of it all, Leslie is sadly mistaken and Eva's father is somebody else.

Now please don't @ me with some, "All black people look alike!?" nonsense

but the actors playing Andre and Jacob could play twins in a production of The Comedy of Errors. I can anticipate myself confusing these two down to their shape-ups in the early weeks of the show. Far be it from me, but I probably wouldn't have cast actors with such a resemblance. Unless...

Indeed! It would seem so.

I really trust Michele Val Jean in terms of having thought about all of this thoroughly. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that I will like each & every decision she made but I feel like we're somewhat protected because I don't see any breadcrumbs leading to a spot called "Neglect". And, of course, I give her points that she said these characters have lived in her head for years!!

I def think I've seen some excellent use of green screen, which I have a great appreciation for. On DAYS when Peacock spent some money on them (new cameras, green screen, a third thing I cannot bring to mind atm.) they used the green screen immediately to tell the story of Marlena & Kayla & Kate dying. So very effective. And, of course, similar timeframe Y&R used it, also effectively, when Chelsea was on that balcony thinking about jumping.

Odd angles is just plain one of my pet peeves. Don't do it, I'm begging!!! GH has been doing grotesque angles for more than a year now on a very regular basis. I have a feeling the techies see it as a new toy. I am not amused.

I have now recruited two whites.

You say this as if it were a bad thing. I believe Andre would dispute that! Come to think of it, I know he would, just as I would. Andre & Dani are having as much fun as anyone we've met in Fairmont Crest so far anyway!!! And, I say, more power to 'em!!!

Lawd, 2 1/2 thankfully boring episodes of DOOL played on my TV while I caught up with this thread. I vote that we stick with weeklies for now. Bouncing back and forth from dailies will scramble my brain, and monthlies will read like Crime and Punishment.

I agree with others that Cady's character seems superfluous. She could easily be absorbed into Vanessa, and that's just what a judicious EP would do. It's still early, but if they keep her, she needs to be fleshed out and strongly countered to Vanessa in a way that makes her presence make sense and worth it.

I get the need to start strong and burn through with spicy story to draw our attention and get us hooked early on, but I agree that Ted/Eva/Leslie is moving too fast. Honestly, I thought that Ted was going to make inappropriate workplace sexual overtures towards Eva and put her in a VERY uncomfortable (and intriguing for us audience) position for a number of weeks before he came face-to-face with Leslie. Even more intriguing if Eva found herself mutually attracted and it was ultimately revealed that he is not in fact her father.

I'll give the dead horse a few more beats: the "middle-aged" set reads way too young to be having all these grown ass kids. Possible, sure; realistic, questionable; confusing, certainly.

    • That was my point really. These anniversary party scenes are the first ones, and now they won't be able to use them (meaning these actual scenes, as aired, with OG Ted). They can recreate them but I doubt they will spring for all the extras to come back and film and recreate everything, so it will be more like tight closed in shots of Ted with one or two other actors, or snippets of Leslie's original speech where Ted wasn't visible. It would be hard to recapture the original energy of the scenes are as they were filmed in their full context. I just think that's too bad, but maybe they will prove me wrong. I never really saw what was so off in his portrayal to warrant a recast, anyway, so that colors my perception as well.
    • Yeah, and quite honestly, are there really that many scenes that are flashback-worthy at this point in the run?
    • I know at one point they were on Hulu & i-Tunes. I just checked it on JustWatch.com & it indicates 1 season on Prime Video & on AppleTV. Have fun!
    • That era is so weird...they made a big deal out of all three of those characters and then they just..disappeared! Not that I am complaining. We talk about the bad out of character writing for Alex under JFP..but this was one example that may have led them to write her being so obsessive with Nick.  WHY would Alex accept Flock of Seagulls guy as her brother? They had her in one scene (setting up the Alan return) complain that Alan abandoned her...she blackmailed him into leaving town and she had been angry at him for helping Brandon with Lujack and also using Spaulding for that dumb dreaming death thing. Endless scenes of her with Simon, I can't believe Bev wasn't bored to death! I would also add Pam writing the scene where she lets Ms. Sally die in front of her to protect Alan and  the writing for Alex could be screwy even before JFP.
    • On this day 34 years ago the final episode of Dallas and came in at an astonishing #2 in the ratings after two straight seasons of weak ratings. Interesting Knots was #27 for that week as well:

    • Thank you for clearing that up. I wasn't watching GL regularly yet at that point, but seems to me I should have remembered the big wedding after Leslie's death (which I do remember) described in the profile. Is there a web archive of SOD summaries, or are referring to your own personal collection?
    • I was bummed that 2.0 ended because Mcpherson (headwriter) had really set up some interesting stories and we never got to find out where the stories would go once they resumed production on 'season 2'. I remembered the EP (Ginger Smith) and a lot of the stars gave a lot of credit to McPherson being able to come in on very short notice and come up with stories/plots (I think it was a very short turnaround time of a few weeks).  It was nice that she got to redeem herself after her year long Days stint was not well reviewed/liked.

    • It seems like a setup for failure to review a single episode of a soap, but Cleveland Amory was a foolish man.  His taste was so predictable, that one wondered why bother reviewing a medium he so clearly disliked. (found on Facebook retro TV group) Another case in point of his misogyny from his review of Dark Shadows (Can you imagine the magazine with the widest circulation in the country insulting its customer in this way today?)

    • They could easily be re-created, or even re-shot in different ways, especially if they were re-shooting scenes at some point, as well.
