Since the press has started to post detailed reviews, I am going to repost my thoughts from the screening from the first episode that I saw at the Paley Center last week. Don’t ready “beyond” this if you don’t want spoilers.

I will watching the live episode today as well and add more if I missed or forgot anything

Beginning/Credits:

-  CBS/NAACP/P&G spent money - The first episode opens with a sequence of Nicole driving into the country club with ‘Best of My Love’ by The Emotions playing

- In terms of credits, Michele Val Jean’s “Created By” credit is first. Queen

- MVJ was also the only writer I saw listed, I didn’t see the whole writing team listed - breakdown writers, or a scriptwriter. I am guessing MVJ wrote this first episode entirely by herself. I know that first script leaked online a while back but the credits listed there don’t fully match what was listed in the writer credits for this first episode. I’m also wondering if the televised credits will differ, I guess we’ll see in a few hours

- Steve Williford is the only credited director for the first episode

Some Episode/Character details with my opinions (If this is too spoilery for most of you, let me know and I can edit):

- The first episode can be quite exposition heavy at times; That’s understandable, I guess, since these people and relationships have been going on for years and we’re just being introduced to them

- Dani is not presented as a very sympathetic character, honestly, IMO. She’s bitter, controlling, and pretty childish at times. Yes, she’s understandably hurt by Billy and Haley’s affair, but she doesn’t seem totally innocent either and her marriage was never as rock solid as she likes to pretend it was pre-Haley. Anita and Nicole pointed out to her that Bill has cheated on her before, but she always overlooked it. She’s just upset this time that he actually left her for the other woman, ruining their seemingly perfect facade. Also, her mothering skills in relation to Chelsea specifically are also very questionable. It’s almost like Dani wants to live vicariously through Chelsea’s modeling career.

- Haley’s betrayal hurts Dani because Dani basically considered Haley as almost another daughter before the affair, and Dani got Haley the job working for Bill in the first place. Haley seems very naive, but you never get the sense she’s totally malicious either in the first episode. She loves the security that her new life affords her, and seems to just want to fit in. As I had said before when watching the trailers, she has some shades of B&B’s Brooke Logan in her.

- Bill is sleaze-ball from the start; None of Dani’s family ever liked that man. However, Timon Durrett is sexy and has amazing screen presence. Probably the most obvious standout character for me in this premiere episode.

- Nicole is presented as having a totally perfect life, but you know something is simmering below the surface…

- Tamara Tunie brings a big royal flair to the show; Anita is wise, and loves her family, but also seems like the type you don’t want to cross - girl grew up in the projects after all! I am excited to see her fully fleshed out in the weeks to come. As I mentioned, Tunie infuses a lot of subtext into her performance in this first episode. The skill of a great actor and matriarch. Her scenes with Nicole and Dani are the highlight for me in this first episode. The look she gave Haley at the end (I won’t spoil what happened yet) was hilarious and priceless.

- I don’t really have much to say about Vernon and the gay grandson, Martin. They had some scenes in the diner before going to the country club, but the grandson seems like the type that places his career aspirations before anything else. We don’t see his husband “Smitty” in this first episode

- The 3 granddaughters are OK - even with limited acting experience, they all do have a nice charisma. I did kind of role my eyes at the Naomi and Jacob’s over the top sex scenes after a while though. Jibes Hordges is pretty hot though!

What I didn’t really like:

-  By far the worst and most painfully boring part of the episode was the white couple. Sorry, based on the first episode, Jen Jacob and Ben Gavin have ZERO chemistry as Ashley and Derek. Their scenes took away energy from this first episode and were totally isolated. I am willing to give them more time, but I do not have a good first impression with these characters, their relationship, and the actors. It felt like this couple was tacked on because someone told them they needed a white couple on the show for some people in America to be able to digest this show better…

- Karen Hugher’s guest spot was OK, and at times when you observe her reactions in the background, it can be funny. But, I am not sure this cameo was totally needed.

All and all - it’s episode #1. Don’t go in expecting something groundbreaking right away. You don’t meet every single yet, but the foundation is definitely being laid for what is to come. Please go in with your soap viewing lens, but also realize this is a new daytime soap launching in 2025. The pacing can be quicker in some instances, and I think the way they film and use music may take getting used to for some daytime soap opera purists. But my advice is to judge this show on its own merits and its own unique identity that it’s trying to establish. I am definitely excited to learn more and follow through residents of Fairmont Crest from here though!

Nothing there surprises me tbh. The obligatory supporting cast white couple definitely seem dull (particularly Jen Jacob) but if that's the only standout issue I'll take it. They're easy come easy go.

Doing a write-up on non-spoiler things, but I just wanted to say this:

"This portion of Beyond the Gates is sponsored by..." is in!

"Beyond the Gates will return in a moment, here on CBS" is in!

YAY!

Not just Tamara, but other actors have done the voiceovers as well, including Karla, Clifton, Daphnee and a few others who were used throughout the first week's episodes.

Oh, and the first week only shows 2 iterations of the opening title sequence, so maybe as the weeks go by we'll see more.

Each iteration only displays 12 cast members, primarily those appearing in the episode.

So excited to watch live today! Entertainment Weekly gave it a very good review as well, which I mostly skipped because I don't want to know particulars - I want to be surprised as much as possible.

Took off this afternoon and will be parked on my couch. LET'S GO BEYOND!

As painful as it is to get though both Y&R and B&B these days, I am going to watch the full CBS soap block today to see how everything flows, lol. We have not had a real soap block in such a long time, I figure I might as well try to experience it on this historic day.

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
