Didn't AMC do one in the early 90s?

The Jamal storyline?

IIRC, it was the Jamal storyline that helped AMC finally win a Best Drama Series Emmy in 1992.

Daytime soaps tend to write storylines about 20 years after when they would be groundbreaking. Yes, many of the themes are still (sadly) relevant and talented actors can still make the drama compelling but by the time soaps get around to writing them, it is no longer controversial, cutting edge or groundbreaking. Unless you live a very sheltered life, the story really doesn’t offer much insight. A story about interracial marriage in the 1990s? Yes, you care about the characters involved but it’s just not all that insightful by then.

There were promising stories that got cut short or watered down too because of network pressure and death threats from “fans”.

The problem is that it always leads to a White Hero story and the character of color is quickly then and afterthought. This is why there just needs to be more representation in general.

Why I cant wait for The Gates to premiere in January

DAYS did David Banning falling in love with Valerie Grant & being involved with the entire Grant family. AAMOF at Doug & Julie's first wedding, Oct. 1976, Doug was worried that David wouldn't get there in time & he was supposed to walk Julie down the aisle. Alice Horton said she knew he would be on time because she had a secret weapon & that was Valerie & she knew very well how she felt about all things family. Then we saw David & Valerie talking, and kissing, and then he left for the church.

The Gates will be the first daytime soap opera that I am genuinely interested in tuning in to in about 15 years. I have pretty much given up on the current lot.
