ALL: Errors, Myths, Omissions & Firsts that weren't

This is to be a discussion of the many errors about soaps. Some are myths.  Many are firsts that weren't actually the first anything. And if you've tried to accomplish a correction, tell us what happened.

This is my latest. Patrick Mulcahey told me that when the writing team for TEXAS was hired there wasn't any work for them yet so there, at the same location, they put them to work writing on ANOTHER WORLD. Even though I know he tried & failed I just tried to add it to his IMDb page. Below is the rejection I just got, after submitting only yesterday. Boy, are they ever timely!

I know what you're thinking of. It will not die! It apparently cannot be killed or corrected. The myth is that when Agnes Nixon left Guiding Light & went to Another World, which was in danger of early cancellation, she took the Gregory family that James Lipton had created on a plane & killed them off in a plane crash. Never happened! No one ever killed people in a plane crash on Another World. Also Agnes Nixon never wrote that anywhere for any soap.

Last year, on the Y&R50 Primetime Celebration 2 incorrect things were claimed. Each of them, to knowledgeable soap fans seem ridiculous!

1. That Ashley Abbott had the first abortion. Truly laughable. The first was an illegal one, on AW, Pat Matthews. The second is largely unknown, but on SFT Kathy went to NY in 1970 & got an abortion. I exchanged messages with Courtney Sherman Simon who played Kathy in researching this. (Also have documentation in a soap mag & verification from a SON poster.) The third is most often cited as the first, unfortunately, and it is a legal Roe v. Wade 1973 abortion on AMC for Erica.

2. That it was Bill Bell who introduced social issues as storylines on soaps. Again, love Bill Bell & he did many things, but not this one! No, Agnes Nixon is definitely the first on this! (And, IMO, she was also the best at it, with Claire Labine nipping at her heels.)

I've posted a question on that week's ratings post. The wedding was May 30, 1984. Without knowing how much a rating point equaled at that time we can't calculate the number of people that a 7.8 represents. Someone, maybe Jason, will reply soon.

But, get this. Today I asked Bing CoPilot which is AI how many people attended the wedding & this was their reply.

Yes, that is the lie perpetuated.

There is no actual evidence of it if you look at the hard data.

I was first suspicious - years ago - when I looked at the yearly averages, and saw ATWT in the middle of the pack for that year. Also knowing that ATWT/Steve & Betsy were hardly a phenomenon at that time - something it/they would have to be to garner 20,000,000 viewers for an episode. Even Greg & Jenny (who were MUCH more popular than Steve & Betsy) from AMC (#2 at the time) didn't get anywhere near that number - although the December 1983 interrupted wedding, by Greg, of Jenny & Tony Barclay received a 13.2  household rating (#1) for the week it aired.

Maybe we can figure this out.

Off the top of my head I looked up 4 African-American actors:

Petronia Paley at AW 1981

Morgan Freeman at RH 1981, at Texas 1981, at AW 1982

Al Freeman, Jr. at OLTL 1972

Laurence Fishburn at OLTL 1974 (He was a child at the time so he may be a first African-American child actor, maybe.)

Now who knows someone prior to 1972?

    • Ron C breakdowns usually involve quick snip scenes.. and so far, it is apparent in spades.  I wish we had the longer scenes like we had in the previous few episodes. And I see Febreeze appeared again today.  More airtime/purpose than Ashley/Derek LOL
    • I loved Felicia and Donna. They were two of the reasons I couldn't stop watching the show even when the writing was horrible. I was never really a fan of Rachel's unless she was sniping at Cecile (my fave character!). But Felicia and Donna (especially Anna Stuart) are AW to me. Of course, it was around the time of their arrivals that I remember I started watching the show. I was 10 in '83. For me, they were always there. I wouldn't have wanted either of them to be killed off.  Rachel and Mac were okay for me but I never saw most of their relationship play or Rachel's previous work with Steve and Alice. I just saw her as there; the matriarch. Never a fan of Rachel and Carl. It made no sense whatsoever.  I did like Quinn and was shocked when they killed her off. Her and Zack were just starting to become a couple I wanted to watch. She should definitely have been a fixture on the show along with her family. Carter and Thomasina I thought were fun and a great couple, too.  That's the thing about being an AW fan. The show was always on the brink of greatness, but then it would shoot itself in the foot with stupid decisions from writing to cast exits, etc. They could just never quite get it together. The cast was amazing! It's the only thing that saved them for so long.
    • I LOVED LD on AW...one of my all time favorite characters! However, on OLTL, her character was pretty pointless from the word go. I think trying to make her this character she played decades before was also a bad choice. She should have been a brand new character that could have been tied into the current canvas better. Rae really had no connections or family on the show. Imagine if she had been brought on as a recast Melinda Cramer, freshly released from the hospital. She would have been tied into a major family, be Kelly's mother, and have some real drama to play opposite RS.
    • it's up  BTG Episode #48 - May 8th cbs.com https://www.cbs.com/shows/video/vEQupDSVKChQKTvVWgX8mrUj2kCJEQTv/ paramountplus https://www.paramountplus.com/shows/video/vEQupDSVKChQKTvVWgX8mrUj2kCJEQTv/
    • I agree DZ is doing good work.  It's nice to see him getting meaty material again.  It's just off. Sonny was also low key the voice of reason saying when talking about Gio which I don't love lol.  And, yes, Dante calling a 15? 16? kid who had a couple of beers reckless at heart is silly.  I think most people had a few drinks in high school.  In isolation, the scenes with Jason/Danny were good when he was talking about AJ's drinking problem.  If you ignore everything else about what Jason did to AJ it was a good historic throwback.
    • @janea4old Tricia Mann-Grant also called Leslie a narcissist in the ET special before it premiered. Thank you! Looking forward to it.
    • -- This is maddening. DZ is acting his ass off, but the script is a mess. As you said, if Dante came down hard on Rocco, these outbursts would make some sense. Comparatively, though, Rocco got a pass, and that's just insane. Dante's not only criticizing Danny and Gio, but the people who raised them. It's just nuts. -- And then Dante goes to his father -- the mob boss killer WHO SHOT DANTE -- to declare Danny "reckless at heart." JFC. -- Kai was in the hospital for that dislocated shoulder about 3x as long as Sonny was in the hospital for his heart. Make it make sense.
    • I'm really of the mind now that Leslie really did have that abortion and Eva isn't Ted or her child.
    • Isn’t it thrilling to get that kind of buzz from a performance again? If this show had nothing else going for it (and it has other real strengths, including the actress opposite her), that would be enough to keep me invested.
