For the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season, “General Hospital” (1.927 million) fell below the two million viewer mark during the week of December 11-15, 2023. The daytime soap dropped -64,000 viewers week-to-week and was down from its performance during the comparable weeks in 2021 and 2020 among Total Viewers. The soap fell from its usual eighth-place position to ninth, ranking behind “TODAY 3rd Hour” (2.010 million).

Also dropping viewers week-to-week was ABC’s “The View” (2.221 million; down -172,000 viewers). The show also lost viewers compared to the same week last year (-160,000 viewers) and was down from the comparable weeks in 2021 and 2022. In the key sales demo, “The View” tied “The Talk” among the Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 demographics, with both talk shows in a virtual tie among unrounded figures.

“The Young and the Restless” (3.169 million) lost viewers from one week earlier but showed an uptick from its comparable performance in 2020, adding +176,000 viewers. Similarly, “The Bold and the Beautiful” (2.782 million) was also down week-to-week but saw an increase of +194,000 viewers compared to the same week in 2020.

“Let’s Make a Deal” (2.228 million / 2.609 million) saw week-to-week increases of +86,000 viewers and +97,000 viewers, respectively, for each of its half hours. The first half-hour of “The Price is Right” (3.629 million) was also up week-to-week, adding +15,000 viewers. “The Talk” also ticked upwards, adding +19,000 viewers over its performance from one week earlier.

What follows is a breakdown of how the daytime broadcast shows performed during the week of December 11-15, 2023 in Women 18-49 Rating, Women 25-54 Rating, Households and Total Viewers, including a look at their comparable performance in 2022, 2021 and 2020, respectively. A closer look at the daytime soaps, including their daily performance breakdown in the demos, will be posted shortly.

The numbers above are calculated using Live+Same Day viewing and DVR playback, defined as 3:00 a.m.-3:00 a.m. and are courtesy of Nielsen. Household ratings are the percentage of TV homes in the U.S. tuned into television, each of which represents 1,250,000 homes as of the 2023-2024 television season.

Note*: Officially, the demo ratings are sorted by the rounded figures released by Nielsen. “NBC News Daily” 2021 and 2020 figures are compared to the performance of “Days of our Lives,” which moved to Peacock exclusively beginning September 12, 2022.

Year-to-year comparisons (2023 vs. 2022) among Households and Total Viewers for most daytime broadcast shows will be unavailable for the foreseeable future due to figures being unavailable to Soap Opera Network during the comparable week last year.

Notable Preemptions/Schedule Changes:

  • “The Price is Right” aired a repeat on Tuesday, December 12 for both half hours.

Y&R back at 2.1

Their highest ranking was CZ first week. All the buzz helped the show. Its unfortunate the story is being told at warp speed.

B&B up in 25-54 category but their HH numbers are stale and their viewers are down. The Eric story has been an epic failure.

    • Hotel was The Love Boat on land but a little soapier. I will forever maintain that Hotel was a time slot hit. I don't believe that 1983/84 Hotel was a better show than Knots Landing.

    • The timing is strange, though. How far in advance would they normally be on location? The Achille Lauro hijacking was on October 7, 1985. Nancy had arrived in Egypt in the storyline by October 18. But the character of Hawk, Chris' Native American friend from Arizona, had already appeared onscreen by September and brought a letter telling Chris to be in Egypt by October 25th.  Why did they already have the link to Arizona before the reason to cancel the shoot in Egypt?  The dust and the jar it came in were from Egypt though. Nancy bought it there and sent it to Mac as a gift before she came back to the states and followed Chris to Arizona.
    • Actually that is not what happened. Nor is the timing right for it to have been. We learned from a WOST interview with Pete Lemay  in 2006, which can be found on YT, that it was Fred Silverman's idea to do the 90 minute show. I don't know how much you know about him but he had these amazing successes as head of daytime at both ABC & at CBS. Then he came to NBC where basically everything he touched turned NOT TO GOLD but to shite. Some of the most expensive shows ever produced up to that time were huge flops. Although even he, like a broken clock, could be right on occasion. However, as we know, he was not right about the 90 minute show. As a matter of fact, afterward,  NBC programmers, who worked FOR him, were asked why they did it & they were quoted as saying it was because they couldn't think of anything else to try. It was a stupid idea from a man who had reached the point where he was throwing anything at the wall to see if it would stick.

    • I stopped watching Another World in 1990. Simply, lost interest in the show.  I had watched the show from 1973 to 1990. The 90 minute show started the decline of AW.  NBC panicked with expanding AW due to the GH hoopla. As mentioned above, 1982 was a trainwreck for AW.  The introduction of the Shea family, the movie storyline involving Jamie, and Steve Frame favoring Rachel over Alice. The writers went into that direction due to the forgettable performance of Linda Borgeson.

    • Ive seen that theory thrown out but the one thing against it is that Leslie and her family lived in Chicago. She only came back to DC last year after her husband died. Unless they say Alan made a trip to DC and died while away, she wouldnt know about that. However I do think the angle of her finding out that Martin was involved could work as that gives her leverage against Bill too for covering it up. She'd want to get revenge on him by threatening to have him disbarred
    • What a good write-up @Errol! Nice seeing the nod to Duplaix's lead.
    • The Egypt location shoot was cancelled because of the Achille Lauro cruise ship hijacking
