Why weren't they allowed to do anything different or interesting in the interim after they called a truce?

I do think that their friendship was a little too much, too soon. After all, these two have been at each other's throats for decades. However, it would have been nice if they at least could have remained civil with each other, and maybe reluctantly teamed up against a common enemy. (And no, not Sheila!)
