ABC Soaps In Depth, CBS Soaps In Depth, Soaps In Depth

ABC Soaps In Depth and CBS Soaps In Depth have now officially concluded their 23-year run in print.

On April 23, it was announced by editor in chief Dawn Owens that both magazines would cease publication, effective immediately. “I would like to thank you, dear readers of ABC Soaps In Depth and CBS Soaps In Depth, for the years of loyalty and support that you’ve shown our magazines, as the print editions of the magazines will no longer be published,” said Owens in a statement at the time. “I would also like to thank our amazing and talented team for giving their all to put out these magazines week after week. The staff has taken great pride in providing positive, uplifting coverage of the soap world for 24 years. At our hearts, we are all fans of the genre. We laughed, cried, and sometimes screamed right along with you at what was happening on our beloved soaps.”

The final issue of the magazine went on sale on Monday, May 4 with its ABC edition. It includes an interview with Maurice Benard (Sonny, “General Hospital”), a Mother’s Day photospread featuring “GH” stars, and a tour of Amsterdam courtesy of the legendary Anthony Geary (ex-Luke, “GH”). The issue will be displayed until May 18 at your local grocery store or supermarket. The final CBS edition went on sale on Monday, April 27, and will be displayed until May 11. It features real-life stories on “The Young and the Restless'” Greg Rikaart (Kevin) and Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe) — Rikaart on COVID-19 and Hendrickson on her newborn baby. Additionally, the magazine presents its Mother’s Day photospread featuring cast members from “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “Y&R,” and a fond farewell to “All My Children” actor John Callahan (ex-Edmund) who died in late March from a massive stroke.

If you are able and can do it safely, make sure to get your very own copy of the final issues of Soaps In Depth, on newsstands now. You won’t regret it.

Soaps In Depth launched in 1997 with three distinct network editions tailored to the daytime dramas airing on broadcast television at the time:

  • NBC Soaps In Depth magazine was shuttered in 1999. It covered “Another World,” “Sunset Beach,” “Passions” and “Days of our Lives.”
  • CBS Soaps In Depth, which began with coverage of “Guiding Light,” “As The World Turns,” “B&B” and “Y&R,” remained popular with readers as it filled its pages with info on “B&B” and “Y&R” along with sprinkles of “DAYS” and “GH” coverage.
  • ABC Soaps In Depth, which began with coverage of “AMC,” “One Life to Live,” “GH,” “The City,” and later “Port Charles,” was the more popular edition historically. Since “OLTL” aired its final episode in 2012, the magazine’s pages were filled with mostly “GH” related content and included some items featuring “DAYS” and the remaining CBS soaps.

    • And sadly I think that’s the trivia Both Jeanne Cooper and Eric Braeden went with for years and years. Lol
    • But people were hating so bad on amc and the final year and the ratings sucked. Business wise they made the right call. Oltl who even gained some ratings back and weren’t they higher as GH at one point is a decision and never understood.
    • Ann Williams was the first Maggie Powers on The Doctors but left to have a baby. Maggie was successfully recast so Ann picked up the role of Eunice (Jo's sister on Search for Tomorrow) and played that role for 10 years before being killed of in 1976. That led to her role of Margo on EON.
    • Looking at those totals it seems most contract actors are on a 1 or 2 week average guarantee. I assume contracts are still operating on 13 week cycles so you would have to know the particular actors contract starting date to work out their guarantee. The question remains as to what actors listed as contract are actually recurring? Bryton ?
    • Yep, that scene was at the conclusion of the Derek Thurston vs George Packard storyline, when Kay decided neither of them should run Chancellor.  By the time she put Victor in charge, Victor had been on the show for months & months with his Rolls Royce, his ranch, and Newman Enterprises.  SONY released some Y&R "trivia cards" in the late 1980s, and one of the questions was "who brought Victor Newman to Genoa City?" The answer on the back of the card is "Kay Thurston, to run Chancellor Industries", and it's a wrong answer lol.
    • I think someone said it did exist, but I can't remember.
    • The bit with the scarf reminds me of the fabled stuffed animal scene with Rick and Phillip. (That wasn't debunked, was it?)
    • Ohh, interesting. I instantly gravitated towards her in that episode. Of course I'm already hooked and want to know why she was trying to poison that older lady, but then how did the older lady know to switch the mugs so Susan drank her own poison...  but I have too many timelines I'm watching right now haha.  Oh, Bolger is definitely hot. I didn't realize he was on GL haha. I knew him from OLTL and other primetime stuff.
    • This is a effin shame. Eff Trump and eff the bastards that enable him.
