I found several references re Robby Benson already playing Bruce in 1971.  The earliest mention I found was from August 1971.  This one was from October 1971.

Variety has Michael Maitland coming in Nov 71. So maybe Robby was first then Michael took over and Robby returned?

Found an article from November 1971 that said Michael was a "new recruit" to SFT.  An article from September 1971, announcing that Robby had been cast in the film, Jory, said that he would be on SFT until he left to film in Mexico, which was due to start on November 17, 1971.  So maybe Michael was just a replacement until Robby finished filming Jory?  Though I haven't found anything about Robby returning to SFT.

Ok. You might be right and Robby originated the role and played it for a few months and then Maitland took over and continued until Gary Tomlin assumed the role.

We know from past experience that published dates in reference books can be way off.
