I LOVED Conchita's song, I sometimes wonder if he won because of his appearance, or in spite of it. But it was an amazing performance and a really great, classicically style power ballad. I hope we get something as good this year. I hope he perfoms out of dag again soon, dressed as a man, he's CUTE. It's sad that Monaco seems to have just given up. I guess they still have their memories of their fabulous 1971 win.

Next few entries:

Albania 2015: Elhaida Dani / "Diell"

This song has been withdrawn and will be replaced by another one.

Belarus 2015: Uzari & Maimuna / "Time"

France 2015: Lisa Angell / "N'oubliez pas"

Georgia 2015: Nina Sublatti / "Warrior"*

* Since Malta's song is also called "Warrior", this is the first time in the history of the contest that two songs with the exact same title will compete against each other.

It's amazing that this contest has survived 60 years! I wonder if anyone who was involved in the first ESC in 1956 could have imagined it would last this long....

This is what it sounded like in 1956

In this first contest the seven participating countries (Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, France, West Germany, Luxembourg and Italy) all had two entries. This has never been repeated.

It is also striking that no country has taken part in all 60 editions.

Germany has only missed the 1996 contest, but not voluntarily. The UK and France have both missed two contests. On the other hand, Morrocco (as the only African country to have ever taken part) only appeared in the 1980 contest where it placed last.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of Yugoslavia, too many new countries wanted to join Eurovision, so in 1993 a pre-qualifying round was introduced. Only seven debuting countries took part in that first pre-qualifying round. Three of them (Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina & Slovenia) went on to appear in that year's Eurovision final.

In 1996, another pre-qualifying round took place which was not televised and where a jury rated all the countries' entries based on audio tapes only. Of that 29 entries, 23 made it to the final. Germany was among the countries which were eliminated.

Between 1994-1995 and 1997-2003, the five lowest scoring countries had to withdraw in the following year to make room for other countries. However, in 2000, the four biggest financial contributors to the contest (United Kingdom, France, Spain and Germany – the "Big 4") were always guaranteed a place in the final. When Italy returned in 2011, the group was extended to the "Big 5".

In 1997, televoting was used for the first time in five countries. A year later, national juries were abolished and televoting became mandatory. In some cases, however, back-up juries were used when there were technical problems with the televoting.

In 2004, a semi final was introduced, so that all countries had the chance to reach the final in the same year. Rules were changed almost every year, though. Because televoting was usually dominated by politicial voting (e.g. neighbors voting for each other or immigrants voting for their homecountry), several Eastern European countries were said to have a big advantage in the competition. In 2007, only Eastern European countries qualified from the semi final, and in the final, the best placed Western European country was Finland at no. 17. There was a huge backlash from the media that year, but people didn't realize that the quality of the Western European entries had declined while the East generally put more effort into their songs and performances.

Nevertheless, in 2008 two semi finals were introduced so that only the countries in each semi final could vote for each other. 9 entries qualified via televoting while a 10th song was chosen by national juries which were brought back that year. Since 2009, a combined vote of televoting and national juries has been used in the final. A year later, the semi finals also adopted this voting format.

I hope that 2015 has just as many surprises in store as 2014 did (Austria winning, Montenegro and San Marino qualifying, Azerbaijan scoring so badly etc.). I think it's time for Hungary, Poland or Iceland to win for the first time. Hopefully Czech Republic doesn't end up in last place again.

In a rather strange move, Australia will compete in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest for the very first time. According to the EBU, Australia was invited to join the contest for its 60th anniversary as a "special guest". The country has been guaranteed a secure place in the final and will also vote in both semi finals.

Some more songs have been chosen:

Cyprus 2015: John Karagiannis / "One Thing I Should Have Done"

Denmark 2015: Anti Social Media / "The Way You Are"

http://youtu.be/g8u3_DsIN2E

Switzerland 2015: Mèlanie René / "Time to Shine"

Reactions after listening to the posted entries:

FYROM: Quite alright. Hopefully they will keep singing in their own language and not do an English translation.

Malta: No! Horrible song, bad singer!

The Netherlands: Not a bad song, but horribly dull. It feels like nothing happens for three minutes. And why the ajajajaj in the chorus?

Albania: No, no, no! Edyta Gorniak did this kind of song a thousand times better for Poland in 1994, and she has a much better voice.

Belarus: Yawn. This could be sold as a cure for insomnia.

France: They've had much better songs, but they've also had much worse. And this kind of song worked for them in 2002 and gave them a 5th place back then....

Georgia: Only marginally better than Malta's song with the same name....

Cyprus: Like the Dutch entry this is not a bad song (quite dull though), but Cyprus (and Greece) have provided me with some of my all-time favourites from the ESC, and therefore this is very disappointing.

Denmark: Not a favourite. Again, not a bad song, but it does nothing for me.

Switzerland: Awful, awful, awful! There should be a penalty for entering horrible songs like this!

Iceland: Not bad at all. Very much in the tradition of classic ESC songs, but slightly more modern.

Serbia: Try again. Iceland did this much better with Hera Björk in 2010!

And some more...

Slovenia 2015: Maraaya / "Here For You"

http://youtu.be/-5JIY7qgzgU

Germany 2015: Ann Sophie / "Black Smoke"

There was a big scandal at Germany's national pre-selection: 8 acts competed with Andreas Kümmert and Ann Sophie advancing to the final round. Kümmert won the televote against Ann Sophie, but after having being declared the winner, Kümmert suddenly said he didn't want to go Eurovision and Ann Sophie was abruptly chosen as Germany's entrant instead. Huge media backlash followed.
