Bunim had just arrived at ATWT at this time and was trying to get it into shape.even though there were still a bloated cast of disparate characters ,things played better than they had in months.

Bad time for SFT-that synopsis says it all.

Y&R was a mixed bag at that time. The revamp was soon to happen. Victor spanking Nikki!!

That Search synopsis is shocking - so many references to "exterminating" and "snuffing out." I don't understand what they were going for at this time or who they thought this would appeal to.

That psychic stuff on GH sounds so hokey. I guess this was leading up to that sword storyline?

AW - I don't understand why Sally, who barely knew Steve, would obsess over his being reunited with Alice. Wouldn't she be more likely to resent Steve?

Did they do any other soap work?

Who was this Karen woman on Y&R?

Dorothy and Wayne were April's parents, right? I didn't realize they were so prominent. Was Bell trying to create a new core family?

GL - I never knew of that story with Morgan and the guy who tried to seduce her. I also didn't know about Mike/Trish. That sounds like a dull pairing.

On Y&R, Karen was Andy's wife when he came to town. She tried to reunite with him but he was involved with Jill. She had a flirt with Lucas Prentiss before vanishing.

Don't know if Bill Bell wanted to build a new family with April's parents and her newly found sister since the four of them (April, Barbara, Dorothy and Wayne) were shown the door on March 1982.

Surprised that Ellis and Hunt were writing all that spy/intrigue stuff for SFT. They had previously written ATWT as a traditional soap and had previously been at Search in the 70's so had a good knowledge of the history of the show. But somebody wanted to pursue the silly spy stuff-it didn't make much sense and would have turned off a lot of viewers.

Bunim got the Dobsons back at ATWT.

The first appearance of Kevin on Y&R.Originally he was going to be a short term character but I think Melody fell pregnant and he was brought back to play the whole baby saga.

It's great to be able to tie the changes in writers at various shows to onscreen happenings.

Thank you for these. It's nice to know more detail about Ryan's Hope at this time - I have some SOD recaps from this point but I don't remember them mentioning a Yvonne, or that the show said Rose wasn't returning (I just thought they'd forgotten Rose existed).

Who was Dennis on Y&R? I never knew Greg/Chris were a couple. I never knew that about Cash's mother either - what story was that leading to?

I hope that played out better onscreen...

On DAYS, who was this Lorie who was murdered?

Maggie had twins - was one Sarah and the other just was written out? Or did I read that wrong? Is the show now saying Daniel was one of the twins?

On Y&R, didn't happen much for Cash's mother as he was killed off early 1982. It makes me think Bill Bell really revamped the show. He probably had things in mind for Cash, or April's family as we said earlier and changed totally his mind.

Dennis Hastings was Karen's lover from when she was married to Andy. Karen wanted to reconcile with Andy but she kept sleeping with Dennis. He was on from late December to January 1982. It was short term.

Greg had always been in love with Chris since the show began. Bill Bell toyed with the idea of Greg's being with her but it never really fulfiled.

On DAYS, it was indeed weird. They mentioned Maggie expecting twins then it is said "her child". Have no idea what happened.

Lorie Masters was a nurse, joining the show in November 1981. She eyed Joshua but dated Evan. Some shadow watched them as they were having sex on a couch. Turned out it was the Salem Strangler.

Did they fire Beverly Penberthy very abruptly on AW or did they have Pat get engaged to Brian so it would mean more when she suddenly left town?

All that about the Sheas when they'd be gone in less than a year.

I never knew about Rachel thinking Blaine was after Steve. That would have been a good story - imagine Jamie's reaction.

I had no recollection that the Corringtons worked at GH--was that when ABC moved them to One Life for 8 monhts or something? Also didn't know Robert J Shaw, who wrote so many classic Peyton Place episodes, was on GH's writing team at any time during Monty's reign. (And I always forget Harding Lemay wrote Doctors for over a year or so near its end...)

A few thoughts about Beverly Penberthy's exit.

December 1981 (Jon-Michael Reed)

One of the few remaining long-run cast members of "Another World" will be departing the NBC soap early in the New Year.

Beverly Penberthy has portrayed Pat Randolph on the show since 1968. She was born and grew up in Detroit where her father was a grocer and her mother was an elementary school teacher. She studied English and history at the University of Michigan where she was active in drama club productions. Penberthy made her Broadway debut in "Nobody Loves an Albatross," a comedy that featured Robert Preston and her future "AW" castmate, Constance Ford (Ada). She toured with Myrna Loy in "Barefoot in the Park” and with James Whitmore in "A Thousand Clowns."

An agent lured her from the road to the Big Apple, for what he promised was a "wonderful play," which turned out to be "Another World." The job resulted in a split from her first husband, a lawyer based in Detroit (she has since remarried a financial investor, Donn Chickering). Throughout her 15- year-run on "AW," Penberthy has been outspoken about the show's writing.

"At least in the beginning there was a sense of continuity. They used to complete segments and story, threads and they don't anymore. More recently, 'AW' has turned into 'Mod Squad,'" with youth and action prevalent.”

"I’ve always strived for a certain reality and consistency in my portrayal, but with all the changes behind the scenes, sometimes it's a losing battle. And lately there seems to be a loss of themoral values and principles that even in the worst of times was part of the story theme."

Last week, Penberthy was not asked to renegotiate her contract. Her criticism, however, may not be reflective of the show's future since a new headwriter, Corinne Jacker, recently was hired. Jacker-has written for the PBS-TV dramas, "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," "The Best of Families," and "The Adams Chronicles." She won Obie Awards in the mid-60s for her Off-Broadway plays "Harry Outside" and "Bits and Pieces." More recently she has written the critically well-received plays, "My Life" and "After the Season."

Whether her playwrighting expertise translates to better stories on "AW" remains to be seen. Already Jacker has introduced a slew of new characters to the program. Newcomers include Kyra Sedgwick as Julia Shearer; Mary Joan Negro as Anne Whitelaw, a patient of Rick. Holloway; Robert Christian as Bob Horgan, Larry Ewing's police partner; Bill Converse-Roberts as blue-collar worker Blue; James Sutorius as Dean Andrews, leader of a fictitious organization dedicated to preserving the rights of male parents in divorce and custody cases; Diana Strickland; Steve's stepdaughter; and, perhaps, the most impressive casting coup, Broadway veteran Anita Gillette as Loretta Shea, wife of labor leader Harry. Tune in tomorrow to see if stories about union construction strikes and single fathers attract audience interest.

Feburary 1982 (Nancy Reichard)

Beverly Penberthy, who has appeared on « Another World » for the past 14 years, is the latest establish soap actress to get the ax. Miss Penberthy recently held a press conference at Sardi’s Restaurant in New York to bid farewell to the press.

She also expressed her thanks to the loyal viewing audience who has shared her trials and tribulations over the years as she played Pat Randolph. The actress also expressed her discontent with “Another World” because over the past two years, the series has been trying to improve ratings with the introduction of plots geared to younger actors.

This type of casting leaves out mature actors such as Miss Penberthy.

February 1982 (Lynda Hirsch)

Beverly Penberthy did not want to leave the show, although at a press conference at Sardi's right after “Another World” terminated her contract, she said that for the past 13 years she's seen her character dwindle down to almost nothing.

Beverly is an accomplished actress who has done many plays while appearing on “Another World”. She is not opposed to working on another soap, but she's been vocal about her unhappiness with “Another World.”

As it happened, during the luncheon at Sardi's, Dorothy Lyman, who played Gwen on “Another World” and is now seen as Opal on “All My Children”, charged that Procter & Gamble, the company that produces Another World, was always "sticking their nose into things," while Penberthy said "not true" — that P & G kept its opinions and criticisms to itself.

Spoken like a true job-seeker!

Who was the single father fighting for custody on AW? Is that supposed to be Sandy?

It's strange hearing as much as I do in these recaps about Anne Whitelaw, as she is only a footnote on AWHP.

I think Shaw had a lot to do with the freezing the world story.
