Los Angeles (CNN) -- The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office is reopening its investigation into the death of movie star Natalie Wood, who drowned in 1981 while boating off Catalina Island near the California coast, authorities said Thursday.

Homicide investigators are taking a new look at one of Hollywood's most enduring mysteries after they were contacted by people who claimed they had "additional information" about the drowning, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Authorities didn't provide further details late Thursday and said a news conference on the matter will be held Friday at 11 a.m. (2 p.m. ET).

Last year, the actress' sister, Lana Wood, and the captain of the yacht on which Wood sailed with her husband, actor Robert Wagner, had asked the sheriff's office to reopen the case.

On Thursday, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy Benjamin Grubb couldn't say whether the sister and the yacht captain have prompted the renewed investigation.

"I don't know if that's related, but that's what the press conference is about tomorrow," Grubb told CNN.

Natalie Wood once said in a televised interview that her greatest fear was of dark seawater. On November 29, 1981, she drowned in the Pacific Ocean off the isthmus of Catalina Island.

Wood's body was found floating in the water about a mile away from the yacht.

Thanks for posting this, Qfan. Since I was only one year old in 1981, I have no memories of Wood's demise, but it was obviously huge news at the time. Her family deserves closure.

Max, I was 12 at the time, so I remember the news was a buzz for quite some time. People still to this day suspect Robert Wagner had something to do with it. I wonder what new information they'd have 30 years later?

The boat captain is also promoting a book. I find it odd that someone comes forward 30 years later with information. It was also odd that Natalie Wood was on a boat even though she was supposed to have a huge phobia of water.

And the police apparently have looked past that for now because the captain and her sister have come forth with some type of new evidence to re-open this case.

Natalie Wood's Cause Of Death Changed From 'Accident' To 'Undetermined'

As of January 2012, the investigation had still found no new evidence to indicate Wood's death was a murder.

Now, however, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is changing their tune. Some of the bruises found on Wood's body, detectives told TMZ, have been determined to be inconsistent with death by drowning.

The detectives noted that they still believe drowning to be the ultimate cause of Wood's death. However, the suspicious bruises were one factor that led the L.A. County Coroner to change the cause of death on Wood's death certificate from "accident" to "undetermined."

I'm kind of disgusted that there were so many fresh bruises and scratches on her body that they determined to have happened before she entered the water and yet they didn't pursue it. Now it's thirty years later. Suspicious to say the least.
