ATWT March 76

The ruling in the custody case came through and the Ellisons retained custody of Teddy, Joyce and Grant's child. Joyce was in a car crash that may have been deliberate. Joyce's dramas continued to annoy Lisa.

John was in trouble over trying to frame Bob over the death of Norman Garrison. He was asked to resign and refused.

I noticed ABC had no pre-emptions in February for Innsbruck Winter Olympics and CBS had no pre-emptions in April and May for NBA playoffs. We might see ABC pre-emptions in July for Montreal Summer Olympics and CBS pre-emptions in September for US Open tennis.

What about Dinah Shore? "See the USA, in your Chevrolet."

Yeah, that, and I am anxious to see 10-1-1976, which is Doug & Julie's first wedding, which supposedly had 16 million people watching & caused it to be the first daytime soap wedding to be of interest to mainstream media because of the gross number popularity. (I feel the need to say "supposedly" every other word!! LOL)

I was not aware of Dinah Shore talk show. Thank you.

So the main 1970s talk shows were Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Donahue, Dinah Shore. Dinah Shore ended in 1980, Mike Douglas ended in 1981, Merv Griffin ended in 1986, and Donahue ended in 1996.

Oddly enough, Merv Griffin last episode was Friday September 5, 1986 and the following Monday (September 8, 1986) Oprah went national.

No, 1976 was pretty low on preemptions. They didn't air Olympics in the daytime back then. I have completed the 1976 charts, so skimming them just now, the only main event left for preemptions in 1976 are a few days of the RNC and DNC conventions and Thanksgiving Day. That's about it, other than some breaking news President Carter press conferences.

I think there was a discussion last year about the number of viewers, and if they were using "Total # of Viewers" in those press reports instead of the # used here ("Average # of Viewers").

Days got a 8.9/31 for the week of 9/27/76. Average # of viewers: 6,340,000. Total # of viewers: 7,970,000.

@JAS0N47 Thank you for the info re 1976 pre-emptions.

Looking back in this thread, that means 1977 was the first year CBS had pre-emptions for US Open tennis.

Also from this thread, Christmas 1979 was the first CBS pre-emption for an NBA game. CBS last pre-emption for an NBA game was Memorial Day 1990.

FROM THE VAULT: WEEKLY DAYTIME NIELSEN RATINGS: WEEKS OF 5/24/76-5/28/76 & 5/31/76-6/4/76:

There were no preemptions at all in September 1976!  A lot of soaps from late September to early November 1976 aired compressed episodes (25 minutes instead of 30 minutes; 55 minutes instead of 60 minutes) due to the Paid Political Ads that would air for 5 minutes at the end of the shows. But that just meant they aired 5 minutes less of commercials during those episodes.

Another fun ratings fact: "The Price Is Right" was rated as one full hour until 9/17/76. It was split into the two half-hour ratings we know it as to this day ("The Price Is Right 1" and "The Price Is Right 2") on 9/20/76. So it took CBS four years to realize they could get a higher-rated show in the rankings by making the second half hour of TPIR its own individual rating!

Does Y&R have any preemptions you know of between August-December 1976? There’s one date that definitely had to have been in those months unless there’s another one in June/July 76. I know 7/15/76 was a preemption date.

7/15/76 was not a YR preemption. The DNC aired pretty much all day on CBS (10-11AM, 130-530PM and 630PM-1216AM) but there was a break from 11AM-130PM, so Gambit, Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow and YR all aired that day,

Here are the YR preemptions for 6/76-12/76:

2 Preemptions:
Preempted Monday 8/16/76- Campaign 76: Republican Convention
Preempted Thursday 11/25/76- Famous Classic Tales

1 Compressed Episode:
Thursday 10/7/76 episode (24 minutes) (followed by Ford For President ad, 1224-1230PM)

1 Short Episode (or triggered full preemption?):
Wednesday 11/3/76 episode- 1211-1217PM (6 minutes)

    • Under all of Madonna's social media today there is this wave of negative, toxic, absurd comments by Lady Gaga fans telling her how Gaga surpassed her in concert in Copacabana. I mean... Who the hell cares? Why are these fan communities so freaking toxic??? I'm sure Madonna doesn't care... But still. Have some respect for M. Leave her social media alone. Go cheer Gaga and be happy. Why come and spew hate on M??? Crazy world.
    • FYI, again, Ruth/Letitia is not in either of these 2 episodes. So that concludes the 4 episodes I had from Nov. 1983. I don't have the October episodes.
    • Eddie has begun uploading the 1990 episodes. I'm so happy about that. I was mindfully taking a break till there's plenty of episodes I can binge watch when I feel like it. Now that 1989 is complete... I can't wait to press play on February 1989 and resume where I left off.

Me when someone asks me to be proper and demure.
    • This is just a guess but I feel like the fact that they keep mentioning her dead husband is for a reason. We know Martin has a secret that likely involved someone dying. Martin's victim could be Alan which Leslie/Dana either knows about or finds out and she uses that to blackmail the family into letting her crimes slide.
    • Just thinking how the Ruth/Leticia guest spot really cemented how Days had changed. Stunt casting with a campy/comedy character in a 'wacky' storyline was something that a few years previously would have been completely out of place on Days (and most other soaps for that matter).
    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/
