DAYS: From the Archives: Bill Bell discusses plans for 1970

So who was this Wilbur Austin? Did they bring him back?

That could have been an interesting story if Sandy had been a delinquent who turned to drugs. It was a few years out of date by then, but interesting. What if Julie - who had been a tearaway herself - tried to help Sandy and got sucked into Sandy's problems?

It seems like stories about priests in torment are more popular or get more attention than stories about nuns (Secret Storm, Thornbirds).

I remember Regina Gleason talked about how much she hated leaving DAYS and how they extended her run but couldn't keep on. How long after this did she leave?

I put that article in the Bright Promise thread.

Bill Bell's letter and now Betty Corday's response ... fascinating. (Thanks, Jason!) Two things I find particularly interesting about Corday's letter: She says that Julie "knows" she is more physically attractive than Susan. Do you think that's an indication of Julie's self-centeredness, or is it a reflection of Corday's (and presumably, the viewing public's) opinion that Susan Seaforth was more beautiful than Denise Alexander? (Personally, I think both women were -- and are -- gorgeous.) Also, Corday's contention that viewers won't be interested in the Marie-as-nun story due in part to a diminishment of public interest in defecting nuns is somewhat ironic, since the Sister Marie-Alex-Neil story was played to great effect almost 15 years later, when public interest would have been even lower.

I thought Denise Alexander & Susan Seaforth Hayes were both beautiful. However, Julie's character was more overtly sexy and sensual than Susan Martin was. And Susan had some hang ups regarding sex. It's funny though, SSH claims that she was never considered beautiful until she started working on Days.

I don't remember the Wilbur Austin character at all and I was watching then (as much as I could considering I was in elementary school). I'm thinking he wasn't in many episodes. And Doug showed up on the scene in early 1970 so I doubt Wilbur was used much after that, if at all.

Here's Wilbur's monthly episode totals:

Arland Schubert (Wilbur Austin)

4/69: 7

5/69: 4

6/69: 2

7/69: 3

8/69: 6

9/69: 12

10/69: 2

11/69: 1

12/69: 2

1/70: 8

2/70: 4

3/70: 8

4/70: 4

Regina's last episode was November 28, 1969. She came back for a newly-created voiceover flashback on May 1, 1972, but that was it.

Did Kitty and Sandy have any story together?

Didn't Kitty raise Sandy outside of Salem while everyone thought Tommy was dead.

They were both on the show from December 1967 to November 1969, so I'm sure they shared some, if not many, scenes together during that time.

They had a girl as Sandy at her dormitory for a couple of episodes, Astrid Warner, but she only debuted a week before Heather did. She did two episodes and I guess they either didn't like her or she wasn't available the following week, so Heather was brought in. Sandy's mother, Kitty, debuted in August 1967, but the character of Sandy did not debut until December 1967.
